Following on from a thread about interior design hates, I thought I'd do a festive version.
I'll start

I do not like:

Pop up trees

Blue lights - flashing or not

Inflatables

Rope light figures

Fibre optics

Projectors on houses.

What are yours?

I pretty much only like a) the tacky 1980s tinsel and baubles of my childhood or b) gorgeous Victorian-style decs like the ones you see in posh hotels or stately homes

Anything else isn’t Christmassy

BellePeppa · 14/11/2022 22:14

I really hate flashing Christmas lights. I can’t understand how people can bear to have them flashing on and off constantly.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 14/11/2022 22:16

Flashing or motion lights.

Nottogetapenny · 14/11/2022 22:17

Nutcracker figures
blue flashing lights
big bows on doors that look like crosses!
Christmas shortened to Xmas

I'm with you. I hate 'em
But I think most people put them outside. To torment OTHER people?

This utter abomination 🤮.

What Christmas decor do you hate?
ghostyslovesheets · 14/11/2022 22:19

@MistyGreenAndBlue that's it! They hate their neighbours - especially the ones who leave them on all NIGHT (I'm looking at you number 9 - who will never forgive the rest of the street for dropping their kerbs!)

and YES Xmas drives me nuts

Scoundrella · 14/11/2022 22:20

Elf on the shelf. I don’t mind if people
do it and their kids love it but it’s not for me …

this new trend of very over the top Christmas trees (see pictures) I’ve already seen so many home bargains or b&m hauls pop up on my social media.

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 14/11/2022 22:22

@Scoundrella - lol, great minds!!!

Jellybean23 · 14/11/2022 22:23

Meerkat decorations of all kinds. What the hell do they have to do with Christmas?

WeAreAllSpecksOnARock · 14/11/2022 22:24

I hate flashing lights, inflatables and those strange santas up a ladder that people stick to their roof.

stuntbubbles · 14/11/2022 22:25

Magical glitter reindeer food can fuck off.

CopOut27 · 14/11/2022 22:26

What’s with all the lolly pops on trees? It looks like some sort of Willy Wonker exhibition.

ODFOx · 14/11/2022 22:26

Now I'm sad. We have a 'normal home' and I love stringing a garland of evergreenery up the banisters on one side. We even dress it with wired baubles and ribbons.

That said, I don't really hate any Christmas decorations. I wouldn't necessarily have them in or on my home, but it's all good fun isn't it?

Whatever you want inside. When it starts being inflatables and annoying flashing lights all night outside, I’m not feeling the love for that.

FourChimneys · 14/11/2022 22:29

Twawmyarse When I emptied my parents' house I found two of those gold lantern things, both still in their packets. It was the summer and sadly I landfilled them. I realise now I should have put them on ebay, they were from the 70s.

It looks fine as far as I'm concerned
I always have green garlands at my windows and on the mantel
I can't see how it's any different to putting up a tree really

Front door with the massive gift bow.

Any decoration in homes before December

HintofVintagePink · 14/11/2022 22:34

Elf on the Shelf.
Gonks.
Plastic cut out wall hangings.

Fladdermus · 14/11/2022 21:15

Traditionel Swedish jultomte are creepier than your British gonks. Yours at least have limbs.

I'm sorry but 'British Gonks' are not a thing. They've somehow infiltrated our traditions and nobody has noticed, they're every-bloody- where!!! I hate the little bastards, where did they come from? It's like the Midwich cuckoos all over again 😭

mypoorheart · 14/11/2022 22:36

VestaTilley · 14/11/2022 21:18

I agree with @StuntPineapples (happy memories of that classic thread, btw, thank you).

If your tree isn’t looking like it’s 1983 you’re doing it wrong.

I don’t like cold white lights, LED lights (too harsh, what you need is soft, coloured filament bulbs), bows on front doors or inflatables.

When we lived in SE London a local house used to put their Christmas inflatables up AT HALLOWE’EN. Then, to add insult to injury, they’d only reinflate them once a week, and they dangled out of the upstairs window, so once they had deflated by day two, it just looked like the neighbours had hung Father Christmas.

This made me snort😂😂

Saz12 · 14/11/2022 22:37

I use lametta on my tree every year...I also have 3 butterfly decorations (how are butterflies festive???) courtesy of a v young dc.

I secretly lust after Proper Tasteful decorations but just can’t kick the multicoloured fairy light habit.

OhMaria2 · 14/11/2022 22:40

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/11/2022 20:56

Tinsel-can’t bear the stuff, 80s clutter filled homes with a load of Tinsel all over it…shudder!

That's my very definition of Christmas beauty and cheer. I love it and I miss ceiling foil decorations

Saz12 · 14/11/2022 22:40

PearlSlaghoople · 14/11/2022 21:40

Sorry to de-rail…. But what is ‘lametta?’
And what is tinsel made of, that gives it that distinctive smell?

Its long thin strips of sparkly stuff - like the sparkly filaments on tinsel but about 30cm long.

Was tacky even in the 1970’s.
