How much alcohol does your DH/DP drink weekly? (Average)

Macbeth8 · 28/10/2022 20:12

Wanting to know as DH claims his drinking is below average for a man his age (mid 30s)
I disagree
Just a general idea would be nice so I could show him!

DH hasn’t had a drink since 1996, we live rurally and he never wants to be unable to take someone to A&E if needed because of having a drink.
I generally have either a bottle of Baileys or single malt at Christmas.

Grin Very good. You can’t mumsnet better than that.

toomuchlaundry · 28/10/2022 23:39

For those who drink heavily in an evening do they drive in the morning?

I alwys think about how many times my family had to go to A&E... Like once every 5 years max.

vdbfamily · 28/10/2022 23:47

an occasional beer but just a stubby. Got into habit of most days during summer but barely anything at present.

Jules198 · 28/10/2022 23:50

A lot. Also says he drinks the same as anyone else, which i don’t believe

mon, tues, weds - 4 cans each night
thurs & fri - 2 pub pints and four cans
sat & sun - four cans and half a bottle of wine sometimes more

i worked it out around 70 units a week 🙁

andmostofallyouletyourselfdown · 28/10/2022 23:54

None. Averaged across the year probably a quarter of a unit a week or less. He's not teetotal just doesn't drink much. Can manage to help me polish off a bottle of wine occasionally or a Bailey's bottle across a few days around Christmas or birthdays though. I drink more but not heaps more these days and would probably have the larger half of these occasional drink bouts.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 28/10/2022 23:54

Mine only drinks once every few months - and never in the house.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 28/10/2022 23:58

Eggygirl · 28/10/2022 20:26

My god, where do all these teetotal people live? This is an anonymous forum, you know, not your GP asking how many units a week you drink

This post reminds me of the responses women get if they say their husbands don't use porn!
It is perfectly possible not to be a drinker.

Neither of us drive, so no.

This is what curtailed one of my children's uni drinking habits which wasn't that bad but even so. Loving their new car and their job and lifestyle which required driving in the morning most days and figuring this issue out immediately meant they took up fairly suddenly with quality over quantity and developed a taste for specific wines in small quantities over some dinners and also nice coffees. I was proud I'll freely admit it.

I do worry it doesn't curtail quite a lot of people's though. How many people really are over the limit on the commute or the school run, anyone got some statistics?

SwordToFlamethrower · 29/10/2022 00:03

My DH has a little glass of baileys now and then. Because he likes the taste, not to get drunk. His dad is an alcoholic so.

OneTC · 29/10/2022 00:08

I have a pint or two a couple of times a week and sometimes have a few on a weekend night, but not every weekend

user864 · 29/10/2022 00:09

OttilieKnackered · 28/10/2022 20:20

Mine drinks too much. Maybe 4 cans or equivalent 4-5 nights a week.

It’s a bone of contention.

My DH also drinks similar amount but sometimes wine instead of beer or anything else we may have in the cupboard! It really annoys me, I drink socially and that's it... maybe twice a month

Vaccine001 · 29/10/2022 00:12

2 bottles of beer some nights but nothing tonight.

lukelovesu · 29/10/2022 00:28

Haha! I thought the same thing!

trailrunner85 · 29/10/2022 00:31

Do you still get enjoyment from the pub without drinking?

Absolutely - possibly more so than when I did used to drink, as I never have that "oh god did I embarrass myself" thing in the morning. And it's cheaper. And I can drive home if it's not walking distance. Lots of alcohol free beers are pretty good these days, so I don't feel like I'm missing out.

The only exception will be if friends are out for more than a few drinks. What starts off as a good catch up can get boring after 5-6 drinks when they're slurring and repeating themselves, so it's at that stage I'll make an exit. And the next morning I'm the one receiving the "wtf did I say/do last night" whatsapps when they've got the Fear.

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 29/10/2022 00:33

All these tee totallers, op, just think if you met them in real life would you wish if emulate fhem`?

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 29/10/2022 00:35

Oh and op, ask them how many of them binge on fats and sugars and are over weight….then do the math.

toomuchlaundry · 29/10/2022 00:50

I actually think it is quite sad hearing how many posters had alcoholic parents and obviously how it is has impacted them

I do wonder this. People I Know who are teetotal and judgey. Then eat loads of crap.
I do drink, but eat very well and I'm slim.
Non drinkers I know eat takeaways on top of their dinner.

trailrunner85 · 29/10/2022 01:38

Honestly, it's the opposite in my experience. The teetotallers I know - and those who drink rarely - are generally slim and fit. But then I know a lot of runners and people who are into gym and fitness, so it goes with the territory. My friends who drink the most are also the largest, and the ones who do the least exercise.

Binkybix · 29/10/2022 01:41

Very rarely now, we both used to drink a lot when going out, but not really at home.

I still drink but not nearly so much when I finally made the link between alcohol and anxiety!

Goldencarp · 29/10/2022 01:47

Macbeth8 · 28/10/2022 20:27

Interested in how it became a problem?

8 cans a night is a problem when you’ve been doing it for more than 25 years. He never drank during the day it was just an evening thing but still it’s far too much alcohol.

Eggygirl · 28/10/2022 20:26

Im not teetotal but only drink at home if we have friends over or at Christmas. I just don’t see the point.

JennyWren87 · 29/10/2022 02:25

My partner only drinks a few times a year (Boxing Day/annual family party). I drink a G&t about 5x per week and always stop at one.
