Wanting to know as DH claims his drinking is below average for a man his age (mid 30s)
I disagree
Just a general idea would be nice so I could show him!

I saw him drink one beer 15 years ago. I think he might have had a few sips of champagne at our wedding.

he doesn’t really like to drink. Nothing against it, just not his thing.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 29/10/2022 02:40

Just asked. Depends on schedule, but a lot on Monday as he was at a client event. Probably about 8. Another 5 on Wednesday. Probably a few over the weekend. That’s a bit higher than normal which is nearer to 8 beers or so over the whole week. It’s fine, he’s always up before me and often very early running or cycling.

ButterflyAi · 29/10/2022 03:01

I don't quite get the 'don't see the point' in drinking comments. The point for many people is to simply enjoy a drink that tastes good. In my case, there is no substitute for a glass of excellent red wine.

I never want to get drunk, I just want the taste of red wine with dinner. It's delicious, is the point Grin

MaryShelley1818 · 29/10/2022 03:06

Mine drinks very rarely. Probably 1-2 a month. We have 2 young children though so wouldn't really be drinking in the house.

alanabennett · 29/10/2022 03:20

One or two cans of beer most nights, I would say. If we go out for nice dinner we'll split a bottle of wine and likely have a couple of beers/cocktails too.

I really don't think the "one glass of weak cider every six months" brigade are in any way representative of the general population...this is a self-selecting response group. The plural of anecdote isn't data, of course, but in the many circles I run/used to run in, different social groups/ages/reason for connection I can only think of one teetotal or "close to teetotal" couple. Then again, I also don't know a single person in real life who won't open their front door to anyone without a pre-booked appointment, so maybe MNers are just a different breed to me anyway 🤷‍♀️

mondaytosunday · 29/10/2022 03:23

My husband and I would share a bottle of wine at weekends, so say one and a half bottles a week each. He might have a glass if out on a business dinner, so I guess on average 14-18 units a week.

alanabennett · 29/10/2022 03:28

Bestcatmum · 28/10/2022 20:39

I only go out with teetotals. I cant abide men who drink too much.

What do you consider "too much"? It seems a bit drastic to not date someone who, for example, drinks wine with dinner.

FangsForTheMemory · 29/10/2022 03:29

OK, no DH but my own drinking fluctuates hugely. On holiday I might have a couple of glasses of wine at lunch and again at dinner, for a week. At home I’ll drink a cocktail in the garden a couple of times a week, all summer. Also wine with dinner a couple of nights a week. In winter, far less. At the moment I haven’t had a drink for more than a week because I’ve got a horrible cold. On Christmas Eve I’ll open a bottle of champagne and make it last 2-3 days.

NumberTheory · 29/10/2022 04:29

Currently, he drinks about a half bottle of wine every week or two.

But in his early thirties it would be more like 2 bottles of wine, 250ml - 500ml of some spirit or other and 3 or 4 pints a week. Things really slowed down towards the end of his 30s, just couldn’t function so well after drinking so he drank less.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 29/10/2022 05:05

Spookyscary · 28/10/2022 20:35

@PurplePixies same here. That's why I rarely drink, having a drinker as a parent is enough to make you teetotal.

Agree. My exH was (still is) a problem drinker, my DC (in their late 20s/30s) don't drink.

My other half rarely drinks and neither do I, but we're older than our 30s 😂

readingismycardio · 29/10/2022 05:10

Maybe a beer a couple of evenings a week - usually weekends, or if we go out with friends. Some weeks not at all. Doesn't drink anything else

Chanel05 · 29/10/2022 05:25

Mid 30s and neither of us drink at all.

Veggieburgers · 29/10/2022 07:25

NotYourHolidayDick · 28/10/2022 20:44

FINE.
Here I am.
I drink a bottle of wine a night.
No fucks to give.
I enjoy it.

Me too.

MrsDThomas · 29/10/2022 07:36

DH rarely drinks. Never in the house, and a few pints if he goes out,

Tabbouleh · 29/10/2022 07:48

Zero. He never enjoyed it.

Indoctro · 29/10/2022 07:48

Nothing nor I do I

Teadrinkingmumofone · 29/10/2022 07:50

None

Macbeth8 · 28/10/2022 20:50

Ok so im really doubting Dhs drinking is "normal"
Before his new job drinking most nights

After this new job
Half a bottle or nearly all of a bottle of 1litre vodka
7-10 bottles of sol/calsberg/stella
500ml.
Weekly

So thats around 64 units a week (40 units in litre vodka/2.4 units 500ml stella can each)

ForwardRolls · 29/10/2022 08:44

Mine gets through a bottle of decent malt over a weekend plus a few cans.
I get through a bottle of southern comfort over the weekend, no cans. I can't stand lager.
Our heating is always on, except overnight.
Both late fifties.

ForwardRolls · 29/10/2022 08:49

toomuchlaundry · 28/10/2022 23:39

For those who drink heavily in an evening do they drive in the morning?

No, that's why we only drink at the weekend.

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 29/10/2022 09:01

Dh drinks anywhere between 2pts three days a week, and at his worst 3pts and two bottles of wine, two days a week. That's between 12 and 60 units a week. He's currently middling at two pts and one bottle, twice a week. He's a binge drinker. It's a massive problem in our marriage. I've looked at Al-Anon (for relatives) as I'm reaching the end of my tether.

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 29/10/2022 09:06

It's also fucking expensive. If he just halved his drinking that would pay for the increase in our fuel bills from this month with the new price cap...

You can still have a drink in the house with young children. Doesn't mean you get rip roaring drunk!

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 29/10/2022 00:35

Oh and op, ask them how many of them binge on fats and sugars and are over weight….then do the math.

I don’t see anyone being judgmental? We just don’t drink, we also don’t get takeaways.
I’m a size 6 and eat healthy meals.
My husband has cancer so he has to look after himself.
My dad is an alcoholic, I’ve seen what it can do to people I also don’t get any enjoyment from drinking and I don’t like how it makes me feel when I have had a couple of drinks.

My husband grew up around adults that drank a lot and didn’t like how they all acted when drunk we aren’t opposed to drinking, we just don’t see the need for it unless we fancy a cider in the pub or a glass of wine with Christmas dinner.

I'm aware of that but we choose not to, that's just our personal preference. I still co sleep so wouldn't have one. Its OK if people choose to do things differently to you 😊
