How much alcohol does your DH/DP drink weekly? (Average)

Wanting to know as DH claims his drinking is below average for a man his age (mid 30s)
I disagree
Just a general idea would be nice so I could show him!

What time would he stop drinking and what time does he drive in the morning? And you feel happy for him to drive the DC knowing he has drunk half a bottle of vodka the night before?

losingit31 · 29/10/2022 16:15

More than I would like (but then he is married to a lifelong non-drinker).

Daily at home: 3 G&Ts (15ml gin only each); 2 large glasses of wine; sometimes a small brandy.

A few cans of Guinness if there's international rugby on tv in late afternoon/evening.

If we go out, we usually do a dinner and drinks package, and he will have 5-6 large gins, and a few glasses of red wine (sometimes more than a bottle).

At home, he has cut down because his cardiologist linked it to his atrial flutter. However, when out/on holiday, there are no limits, it seems. There are times when we have been on an all-inclusive holiday and I have felt like his schedule was organised around having time for drinks before dinner and I no longer try to fit in with it. Last year in Cyprus he would leave the pool before I was ready sometimes, so that he had time to go to the gym then shower and change and head to the bar for happy hour at 5pm. I didn't want to sit there for hours with my soft drink so I usually wouldn't join him until much later. He made friends with the other drinkers!

He is rarely visibly drunk, or I would be more vocal. Writing this, I am now wondering how large a part alcohol is going to play in our upcoming all-inclusive holiday Sad

My god, where do all these teetotal people live? This is an anonymous forum, you know, not your GP asking how many units a week you drink

😂😂😂😂😂

monsteramunch · 29/10/2022 16:18

Look at this advice from Roadwise (attached) OP.

It's frankly absurd that you believe he is under the limit driving the morning after he drinks half a litre of vodka. That's 20 units.

Twenty units!

I'm flabbergasted you believe he is safe to drive the morning after. And not just that, you're happy for your children to be his passengers.

Would it not be a bit of an alarm bell to have a box of breathalysers?

The reason he doesn't appear drunk is because he's built up a massive tolerance for alcohol.

monsteramunch · 29/10/2022 16:38

@losingit31

He is rarely visibly drunk, or I would be more vocal.

This would make me more worried, not less.

To be consuming the amount he does and not usually appear to be drunk means he has built up a huge tolerance.

I hope he doesn't drive the day after one of the dinner and drinks nights you describe?

FlowerArranger · 29/10/2022 17:07

If someone sees a need to have a box of breathalyzer, he KNOWS he has a problem with alcohol!

But CHOOSES to not do anything about it...

All these tee totallers, op, just think if you met them in real life would you wish if emulate fhem`?

If you need to drink to be fun and interesting, you're not fun and interesting. You're just pissed.

toomuchlaundry · 29/10/2022 19:41

Instead of mocking the teetotallers I would be concentrating on the drunk drivers

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 29/10/2022 19:43

Early 40’s and he drinks none. Will have a blow out at a stag do but that’s it.

I’m really not one of the MN pearl clutchers who claims anyone who drinks more than a thimble full of wine a year is an alcoholic but I’d absolutely hate it if he drank every night. I had a BF like that once and it just annoyed me. Especially as he’s moan about a headache the next day and wouldn’t even stay off the booze if I needed a lift or picking up from somewhere

Yarrawonga · 29/10/2022 19:46

A glass of wine or a bottle of beer every night is unlikely to give anyone a headache the next day.

Not everybody drinks to get drunk.

Fluffyknickers · 29/10/2022 22:38

Mine has a lint every night after dinner and probably three pints on a Saturday with a take away. If we go out it’s not much more. I think that’s fine, he enjoys it and i guess it makes him feel good. I rarely drink now, menopause makes me feel bad enough 🤣

Darbs76 · 29/10/2022 22:57

a little of vodka by itself is bad enough but with the other drinks too, yes he does have a problem. If he is adamant he doesn’t, why doesn’t he quit drinking for a while, from now until Christmas. There’s a big drinking culture in this country, and unlike other European countries where people have a glass of wine with their meal then go onto coffee, in the U.K. if you don’t drink to excess you’re dull and boring, or weird.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 30/10/2022 02:29

He has red wine with dinner and a beer after dinner.

Macbeth8 · 30/10/2022 14:20

Of course I have seen it. Bear in mind if you read my post I said he drinks HALF A LITRE OF VODKA A WEEK. NOT IN ONE NIGHT (Although he did during lockdown but was wfh so no driving at all)

So usually if he is drinking on a weekday its bottles of beer and a few glasses of vodka and thats when hes doing the school run.
We dont tend to drive much on the weekend but he is deifnitely not over the limit as proven with the breathalysers

Also FYI some people with faster metabolisms can expel alcohol from their bodies faster. Dh has had a medical and a surprise alcohol/drugs test (that they do randomly at his work) the night before he had 6 pints down the pub..the test was 9am in the morning and didnt show.
Iv also tested it out on me and Mine didnt show after 4 G&Ts.
I do believe not everyone is the same ffs

If he never drinks half a litre of vodka then drives in the morning, did you say this?

Yes Dh will happily drive in the morning even after drinking half a litre of vodka and a few bottles prior this.

monsteramunch · 30/10/2022 14:31

why did you say this, that was meant to say.

Pugdogmom · 30/10/2022 14:37

DH and I are in our 50s. We used to enjoy drinking, but as we have got older, the hangovers last too long, so we hardly bother. In summer sitting out in garden, we'll have wine or beer and at Christmas, but really cba anymore.

VampiresWife · 30/10/2022 16:32

WisherWood · 29/10/2022 19:03

If you need to drink to be fun and interesting, you're not fun and interesting. You're just pissed.

Having a couple of small glasses of wine because it tastes nice isn't going to make you 'pissed'.

It really does seem on MN that there's no middle ground when it comes to alcohol - it's either wooooahhhh make mine five trebles or I sniff the barmaid's apron every six years and that's quite enough for me.

In reality most people drink moderately - I don't know anyone who's pissed every time they have a drink, or otherwise never touches a drop.

toomuchlaundry · 30/10/2022 17:24

So how many bottles of beer and glasses of vodka (and how much vodka, I'm assuming generous proportions) would he drink the night before the school run and when would he finish drinking in the evening?

trailrunner85 · 30/10/2022 19:10

Not for most people, no. But one thing I do wonder, since I cut back drastically on my own drinking, how honest people are being with themselves when they say they only drink wine for the "taste."

Ok, good wine is delicious. But how many people are drinking good wine every day, compared to those drinking a basic 19 Crimes/ Castello el Diablo/ Jam Shed/ whatever? If it's genuinely about the taste would you rather not have one good bottle once a week rather than a standard one regularly?

And also - why is wine the only thing this "I have a small one daily for the taste" theory applies to? You don't see people eating quality steak/ cheese/ chocolate/ etc every single day because they like the taste. They save it for special occasions. Why in our drinking culture do we make an exception for booze?

The UK seems to have this weird double standard where we drink very average wine to excess, yet want to pretend it's a sophisticated European thing to do.
