Would it not be more likely to have been David Attenboroughs brother Richard going to the royal academy (depending on how long ago this happened)?

gogohmm · 23/10/2022 08:36

Met tony Robinson in a pub, I'd seen him the day before at an event where he was very entertaining. Standing at the bar next to me I said how much I enjoyed the night before and returned to my seat, he actually was sitting on the next table with a friend but preceded to strike up up conversation and barely due breathe, so many anecdotes! Such a lovely man

I’m quite pleased to hear David Attenborough is a twat. It makes me feel better about not being able to stand him popping up on my telly every five minutes lecturing me about climate change, when it’s not me whose entire career is thanks to the wonders of air travel Blush

Hurrah! It's not just me feels like this then. I can scarcely watch his programmes because of the "it's all your fault" lecturing. (10 years since I've been on a plane and and that was a one off...)

Bovrilly · 23/10/2022 07:42

I used to work at the BBC in Bristol where the Natural History Unit is based. David Attenborough is not a twat, he is a very polite person and I've never heard a bad word said about him, which is unusual for a TV presenter and even more so for someone who was a senior manager at the BBC.

Me too at BBC Bristol, @Bovrilly, I too met him and he was just an ordinary charming man. I never heard a word against him either.

VirginiaQ · 23/10/2022 08:52

Well Richard Attenborough was president of the RA so would make more sense it being him than David as a previous poster said. Although he died in 2014 so must be an old story.

I’m sure he got on his bike to meet the gorillas.

I knew someone who worked at the Royal Academy, so not my story...
He told me that David Attenborough was absolutely vile.
( I know I couldn't believe it either)
Apparently the Academy does out of hours openings for their special members. On this occasion J had to open up, was thrilled to do so as he was a huge fan of DH.
Whilst unlocking the areas he turned to David H and mentioned he thought the last episode of xxx was the best TV he had ever seen. DH stood there and stared at him before saying coldly.. " I don't think someone like you should be talking to someone like me"
J was mortified.
On another occasion DH threw his coat at J and told him to take care of it.
He didn't left the coat on the floor and walked away.
Has never watched anything he's made since. Apparently his partner looked embarrassed both times.

Sorry but I don't believe this story - even if he was having an unbelievable off day I don't believe he would talk to someone like this.

I know people who have worked with DA over a long period and this does not tally at all with their experiences.

I’ve read this post three times. It’s like a riddle and makes no sense whatsoever.

🙄

WobblyLondoner · 23/10/2022 09:14

PS I think the poster might have mixed up the Royal Society (science fellowship body) with the Royal Academy (art exhibitions)?

Anneofwindypoplars · 23/10/2022 09:16

I’m not normally this rude but how slow are people?

DH was a typo and should have been DA. It makes perfect sense, unless you’re really stupid Confused

This makes more sense. I’m not buying it about DA. That contradicts everything I have ever heard about him.

No need for rudeness.

Poster seems to have mixed up a few things to be fair 😬

PinkButtercups · 23/10/2022 06:48

What? Who's DH?

David Hattenborough

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 23/10/2022 09:21

@VirginiaQ Richard Attenborough was President of RADA, not the Royal Academy (of Art).

My relative worked for many years at the RA for the chief executive and I find the Attenborough anecdote rather unbelievable. I don't think they ever opened up for a single vip (yes, for royalty and heads of state and their entourages) but these would all be met and escorted by senior RA staff, probably the president, not the person with the keys. I will check with my relative.

Anneofwindypoplars · 23/10/2022 09:22

There is a need when someone clarifies on the first page and people are still squawking that they can’t possibly understaaaaand.

It really is not that difficult, unless you have quite serious comprehension difficulties. I think if I said to a group of five year olds ‘Millie, could you bring me the books? Oh sorry - I meant Ellie’ they’d get it, wouldn’t they? Confused

Exactly what I thought.

And it may be very unfair of me, but it also seems more likely to be RA, given his reported ultra-luvvie persona, than DA.

ThingsIhavelearnt · 23/10/2022 09:24

David Attenborough is LOVELY really lovely. My Daughter wrote to him a one-way letter about his programme. She got a handwritten beautiful personalised letter back to her and her brother within 4 days................totally unexpected and delightful.
My friend did a cartoon of him in the NH museum and sent it to him and likewise.
Have also met DH in person and he was lovely and gave his water to someone else. His WIFE not his partner died a long time ago -25/30 years.

When I was little I met Patrick Moore, just as scatty as he appears but he was really nice to us all. Talked to us and listened to our babbling, seemed like a nice man.

ExtraOnions · 23/10/2022 09:31

Sarah Pascoe …. What an arsehole. Rude Rude Rude, and about as funny as foot rot. Met her at a mural friends party.

mansviewpoint · 23/10/2022 09:36

Jeremy Kyle - Absolutely horrible person. Was annoyed that my 15 year old daughter looked at him, came over with his chest puffed up and was about to open his mouth in a rant until he spotted me. complete nelson complex. WHo'd have thought, heah...

Sapphiresanddiamonds · 23/10/2022 09:36

There's another thread running about celebrities, there are multiple posts about how lovely David Attenborough is. The one in this thread about him at the RA is a case of wrong celebrity surely.

I came across John McCrirrick once. His behaviour - even for him - was shockingly awful. A thoroughly unpleasant man, and holds top place in my 'worst celebrities I've met' list.

dontputitthere · 23/10/2022 09:38

Don't believe the Attenborough story at all.

He was charm personified when I worked with him. Even sat down and listened to me wittering on about primates over a cup of tea...

Had plenty of friends work with him say the same thing. Not a bad word against him.
