Boris Johnson vs Rishi Sunak

colddayinhell · 22/10/2022 14:45

I think both are awful and we should have a general election but if you had to choose between these two, who would you choose to be PM?

YANBU = Boris
YABU = Rishi

Lord Frost who worked on Brexit and more recent Northern Ireland negotiations is backing Sunak.

That tells us something.

I actually liked him. I think he and Truss didn't get on terribly well? I might be imagining that.

massive unaffordable welfare state and spending

Wait until Labour get in - then you’ll see a massive unaffordable welfare state and spending.

There's no money

lurchermummy · 22/10/2022 17:37

@balalake I don't believe that lockdowns and restrictions saved anyone and in fact caused harm that will last generations

WhereIam · 22/10/2022 17:38

I've just seen this tweet about Dominic Cummings and his opinion on Truss

Dominic Cummings has described Truss as “about as close to properly crackers as anybody I’ve met in parliament”. This, however, is unfair. There are quite a few in parliament who are even closer to being properly crackers than Truss.

Given that Cummings is a whistleblower of sorts, he's very against BJ. I haven't heard him express anything negative about Sunak though.

I'm in Ireland watching this and I keep hearing how Tories won't get back in.

As an outsider I really believe they will.

You really need to be looking at for is the PM for next 6 years.

Externally it appears that Labour don't have that something the people want.

lurchermummy · 22/10/2022 17:39

falllakes · 22/10/2022 15:06

Boris is unfit for public life.
That was why he had to resign as PM.

I don't much agree with Rishi but he isn't personally and professionally morally bankrupt and corrupt.

So Rishi seems the sane choice.

This

You obviously haven’t seen the polls. Or you’re on the wind up.

heidihigh · 22/10/2022 17:40

Neither. But then I'm not sure Starmer would be any better if a GE was called. What an embarrassment.

WhereIam · 22/10/2022 17:46

I don't know anymore really. I think people expect politicians to be beyond reproach when none of us are. Boris partied or at least attended illegal gatherings. I get that anger. I cried almost every day of lockdown. But has he really swindled us? Has he fucked us over entirely? He wasn't the only one at those parties.

I'd prefer to have someone who is self-confident enough to not need to become some sort of renegade to prove themselves, taking the country with them on their one-woman show. I'd also like intelligence. Sunak has both of those in my personal opinion, though how corrupt he is in terms of his or his wife's personal finances, hell knows.

To be honest, at this point, it's better the devil you know.

RIPQueen · 22/10/2022 17:49

Lopilo · 22/10/2022 17:16

@RIPQueen I think it was more to do with his social democratic economic policies. They don’t tend to go down well with conservative members.

His wealth is also relevant because his wealth is in a different league to everyone else’s, except the absolute super rich, and therefore none of his policies will have any impact on his lifestyle.

Realistically none of their policies ever impact their lifestyle. You see it with labour too - their children go to the best state schools
etc and they live totally differently. Somehow they are jsut better at fooling people!

WhereIam · 22/10/2022 17:51

The immediate thing we need is stability. After that, we need very shrewd minds (ones who listen to experts). We also need someone who can lead.

If I ran for parliament, I wouldn't get past the first post, as my life is rather scandalous to some people.

I think people need to stop with the piety and expectations of saintly leaders.

neverbeenskiing · 22/10/2022 17:54

Rishi Sunak isn’t morally bankrupt

I disagree. Remember the leaked video in which he openly boasts about taking money away from socio-economically deprived areas to further enhance the quality of life in already affluent communities? Let's not kid ourselves that Rishi has the moral high-ground. As Chancellor he is culpable for all the lies, corruption and chaos wrought by Johnson during his premiership. The cover ups, the u-turns, the incompetence, the wilful ignoring of scientific fact throughout the pandemic, not to mention Tory cuts to vital public services and the callous policy decisions that disproportionately impacted the poor and the vulnerable...he was quite happy to turn a blind eye, or defend it all until it was no longer in his own interests to do so.

They are both cunts. It's just that one cunt maintains a veneer of respectability, and the other cunt has realised he doesn't even need to try.

FixundFoxi · 22/10/2022 17:54

I'm fearful for austerity mark 2. It's well documented that the 2010- present day Osborne version hit the north and midlands hardest (mainly labour constituencies).
We've nothing left to cut now. Will be interesting to see if more affluent areas will take the pain this time...

WhereIam · 22/10/2022 17:56

Boris isn't ever going to be a male model. He's always going to be a bit of a bumbling idiot. I don't feel that's he's evil though. I think he's a content person who looks a little idiotic at times, but I don't think that he has ever acted with malice.

Sunak is the financial brain that we need right now. Could he lead a party and a country through what will be extremely painful times? I don't know. I don't think so. I'd prefer him behind the scenes as Chancellor.

Blossomtoes · 22/10/2022 17:56

I think people need to stop with the piety and expectations of saintly leaders

I’d settle for decency and integrity. I’d take one of the old school politicians any day - Major, Heseltine, Benn, Castle - people who took their responsibility seriously. I don’t want a saint, I just want a decent human being.

TweetnDour · 22/10/2022 17:56

I'd like Boris back. Can't stand Rishi.

HRTQueen · 22/10/2022 17:56

Sunak I feel he would be better for the country more stable

though I think Johnson will win as he is the better choice for the party keeping more MP’s in Parliament

party before country unfortunately

I know people who still support Johnson what’s acceptable for him just simply wouldn’t be for other MP’s never mind PM’s its fascinating but extremely damaging too

I too can’t understand how Truss every became PM

FixundFoxi · 22/10/2022 17:59

@heidihigh why won't Starmer be any better ? Alot of projection going on there based on no evidence. He's never been in government. Presumably you gave Johnson a chance in 2019 who had been in government and been an absolute disaster/laughing stock. You took a punt with Brexit no doubt...

If you've lived a life and never come across corruption or abuse of power, you've lived a chamed life. That is reality. Is it fair? No.

We've all had dickhead bosses. We've all been the grafters while other people took the credit. At some point, most of us, whether we know it or not, have been exploited.

I'm sorry to break it to you, but this isn't a monastery or Utopia. This is life.

neverbeenskiing · 22/10/2022 18:02

Do you believe racism and homophobia to be without malice? What about conspiring to have someone assaulted? What about impregnating a woman who isn't your wife five times?? Maybe once could be put down to carelessness but by the 5th time... What about paying your mistress significant amounts of public money and handing lucrative contracts to your mates and party doners? Bless him, he didn't mean to do any of it, must have been by accident.

WahineToa · 22/10/2022 18:03

EVERYONE was happy to bleat on about lockdowns. Everyone was riding the “furlough wave”. Everyone was reporting neighbours and bitching and moaning about leaving the house.
everyone is now pissed off at the govt funding the lockdown?!

Exactly!!

Blossomtoes · 22/10/2022 18:04

I’m sorry to break it to you but I’ve seen a half century of politicians and they used to be decent and honourable. And when they weren’t they were forced to resign. We need to get those standards back and stop thinking integrity is utopian.

WahineToa · 22/10/2022 18:05

What about impregnating a woman who isn't your wife five times??

That’s nothing to do with us. Even politicians are entitled to some private life.

If my boss is a cunt (morally) but he manages to keep a company going so that I can continue with earning a wage and living my life as I see fit, I don't give a fuck if that boss's morals are questionable. If he's a sadistic, cruel cunt? That, I take issue with. If not? It's between him and God. Would I nominate Boris for sainthood? No.

Scandal after scandal after scandal throughout history. In every country in the world. It's a digital age now, so more are getting caught. No difference to Henry VIII.
