To call my baby (DD) ‘Ocean’

I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

Oceana is a name. Ocean is a noun but not a name.

JaggySplinter · 03/10/2022 19:07

I had friends called Océan and Alizée (french for "ocean breeze"/"trade wind") when I was at school. I think they are lovely names.

You do you. No one else can tell you what name will work for your DD.

Tealpoppy · 03/10/2022 19:08

I know one and she's lovely
I was a bit taken back when she told me her name so I call her beryl instead (she thinks it's funny) xxx

Beaucielblues · 03/10/2022 19:09

I really like it.

W0tnow · 03/10/2022 19:09

It’s a brave choice, which means you’ll have divided opinions. But, as with most names, people will get used to it, and your daughter will just be…Ocean. 😊

Marchmount · 03/10/2022 19:09

Océane is a very popular girls name in France. Pronounced O-Say-Ann. Im
ambivalent aboit it but it’s a Top 10 name in France. Not sure if you’ve got any French links?

The baby's other parent has some say though, given they're married and raising the child together. The op says he thinks its embarrassing.

Both parents get to veto one another's suggestions where they're both raising the child. Obviously he has to make some sensible suggestions too and they have to find something they're both content to call their child.

When I consider names, I think “would I like to be called this?”
I personally would not like to be called Ocean. If you would, maybe your DD would too.

Whattheactualfcku · 03/10/2022 19:12

I personally don’t like it but do like River and bear

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 03/10/2022 19:12

I have ancestors named Ocean, one in particular had a brother called Neptune (he died in WW1). Apparently it was a fairly common name in their community. If I'd known about them before dc2 was born, I think I might have given it as a middle name but my paternal Grandmother was embarrassed about her background.

Sciurus83 · 03/10/2022 19:13

I rather like it, there's a woman called Ocean Ramsey who swims with tiger sharks. I don't think it's that out there, River is quite a popular name now so why not Ocean.

Call your baby what you like and don’t ask mumsnet

Or if for some reason you need strangers opinions at least use the correct topic so those of us who have the craziness that is baby names hidden dont have to see it

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/10/2022 19:16

You could call her Sea for short?

What names does your Dh like?

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/10/2022 19:17

I’ve just seen your user name op. I think you are having a giraffe.

Mxflamingnoravera · 03/10/2022 19:17

Why not go for the Irish name Oisin? It sounds similar and you lose the "out there" connotations.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 03/10/2022 18:46

Unsure tbh. I think I prefer STORM. Smile

I knew a very flamboyant gay man called Storm.
His real name was Peter, I think.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/10/2022 19:18

Just no.

lizziesiddal79 · 03/10/2022 19:18

I’ve taught a boy called ‘Ocean’

What's wrong with normal, human names?

Mxflamingnoravera · 03/10/2022 19:18

Nb Pronounced O-sheen.
