To call my baby (DD) ‘Ocean’

Thedeepdeepsea · 03/10/2022 18:45

I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

Not sure but agree on Marina, beautiful name.

me too...it's so classy and elegant

GettingItOutThere · 03/10/2022 19:39

how about ophelia or ottelie (however its spelt?)

ocean is just weird! You are naming a human, not a baby. Girls names are so easy to pick, there are thousands!

Cheeselog · 03/10/2022 19:39

I know someone called Azure who goes by a nickname as they find their name ridiculous.

AuntSalli · 03/10/2022 19:39

And they can and do change it later if it doesn’t suit them or they don’t like it I’ve got one with a very boring playing name think Millie Sara Helen Joanne type thing. She’s changed it to something out of a 70s porno

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 03/10/2022 19:41

Genuine question, what counts as a normal human name? I ask because I think this may be the point that DH is trying to make

To me, Ocean counts because it's a name. There are at least 5 members of my family called that I've found, born from 1830ish onwards. All girls.

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/10/2022 19:41

I wonder why you might give your child a name, expecting that they’d change it when they are older.

VestaTilley · 03/10/2022 19:43

It’s awful. Think what kind of a job she could (or couldn’t) do with a name like that.

For heaven’s sake, can’t we just go back to Sarah, Hannah, Rachel, Claire and Louise and have done with all this nonsense about pushing our own individuality on to our kids? They’re children, not dolls.

No I don’t expect that she would change it but she could if she wanted

Obviously just my opinion but whilst I'd say if you both love it go for it, I think if a name is quite unusual it really requires both parents (assuming both are involved with raising the child) to be on board.

I'd also be really cautious about giving a child a name which is particularly descriptive. I have a level of grace and poise which would have seen me ridiculed if my parents had chosen to call me Swan.

Itstarts · 03/10/2022 19:44

I've taught an Ocean. She was lovely! It's not too out there. I've also taught a Lake which I thought was more unusual.

Spanielsarepainless · 03/10/2022 19:44

Down here it's the name of an enormous helicopter carrier/amphibious assault ship. Avast behind and all that.

RedFlagAtNight · 03/10/2022 19:46

I like it. For me Ocean is a boy's name; I know a Henry Ocean Surname in his 80s and really like the name. I also know an Océanne (f) who is french but living in the UK and love that name too.

CheshireCats · 03/10/2022 19:46

It's a flat no from me.

The children I have known named Ocean/Oceane have all been black. Is this another name to add to the list of racial prejudice in employment?

Anotherguy · 03/10/2022 19:47

If you want my pacific opinion I wouldn’t call a baby ocean.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/10/2022 19:50

I went to school with an Ocean, and my DD26 had a college friend Ocean too,- I didn’t think it was so unusual. It’s lovely, and personally I think it works for all stages of life, not like a nickname name.

Charlavail · 03/10/2022 19:50

I've taught a fair few Oceans. Why is Sky a name but Ocean isn't?

Favouritefruits · 03/10/2022 19:51

Cute name for a little girl but no grown woman wants to be called ‘Ocean’ she’ll feel so silly with a name like that in her adult life.

Beautiful3 · 03/10/2022 19:55

There is an ocean at our school. Most of the lower income families children, have the unusual names, for some reason.

Margery81 · 03/10/2022 19:55

Mxflamingnoravera · 03/10/2022 19:17

Why not go for the Irish name Oisin? It sounds similar and you lose the "out there" connotations.

Oisin is a boy's name. Roisin might be better if the OP wanted to go down this route.

PS I think Ocean is a lovely name.

I like Hannah, Rachel and Louise a lot actually

It'll tide her over until she is old enough to change it.

greatestgoatofalltime · 03/10/2022 19:57

Talk to me, baby
I'm goin' blind from this sweet-sweet cravin', whoa-oh
Let's lose our minds and go crazy, crazy
I, I, I, I, I, I keep on hopin' we'll eat cake by the ocean

MrsJThornton · 03/10/2022 19:58

I know an Ocean whose at school with my son. I think it's beautiful and unique. she's 13 too and I've never heard anyone say anything negative about the name

mathanxiety · 03/10/2022 19:58

What @onlythreenow said.

Same sort of situation.

I think it makes a lovely name.

If you end up dropping it, how about Sian?
