To call my baby (DD) ‘Ocean’

Thedeepdeepsea · 03/10/2022 18:45

I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

I have always loved the name ocean it's beautiful. Call your baby whatever you want and as an adult she will be used to her name and glad you didn't call her something boring that there are six of in her class! I really don't understand the mumsnet snobbery with unusual names

Pinktrews77 · 03/10/2022 19:22

I know a French woman called Marine.

Tbh, and I hope this doesn’t sound snobby or unkind, but I think you need to be quite lithe, beautiful and ethereal to carry off a name like Ocean or Storm and I would be worried that that would be placing quite a pressure on my child to live up to the name ifyswim.

VladmirsPoutine · 03/10/2022 19:22

I like it. I don't think it's altogether that out there.

feckoffbrian · 03/10/2022 19:22

Oceane is a very common name in French speaking parts. We know quite a few.

Kitkatcatflap · 03/10/2022 19:23

It's a bit cringe.

heyitsthistle · 03/10/2022 19:23

Cue a lifetime of wave related jokes

LiveInSunshine · 03/10/2022 19:23

I’ve taught two Oceans, both male.
You can do as you please though, I don’t think that matters.
How about Oceania, Delmar, Anthia, Azure on the theme

DappledYork · 03/10/2022 19:24

PeekAtYou · 03/10/2022 18:50

There was a boy in my son's class called Ocean. Considering how words like Bear, Willow and Magnolia have become names, I don't think it's that weird.
If my DD's name was up to me I would have gone for a nature name like Willow.

These are names for pets.

Ocean-why not Puddle, Channel, Canal, Dribble or Spit?

Oneandone · 03/10/2022 19:24

Google lists of 'baby girl nature names' and see if there are any you and your husband both like. I know a little girl called Wren which I think is quite pretty.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/10/2022 19:25

How about Billy (or maybe Billie for a girl)? You can tell me to go and get stuffed, if you like Grin

I don’t think it’s cruel. DD could always change it when she’s older if she doesn’t like it

I've got to be honest, if you're saying "I don't think it's cruel", that kind of jars in a 'the lady doth protest too much' kind of vibe. Ditto the suggestion about her changing it if she wants to when she's older: of course, plenty of people do change their names when they're older, but the vast majority of people don't ever change their first name, so it isn't something you would necessarily consider nonchalantly as a standard lifestyle choice.

I loved Wren as a name, but had visions of a six foot tall well built daughter really resenting me…

ilovepixie · 03/10/2022 19:28

I know a baby called Ocean Blue

Willow

Ursula (bear)
Skye
All the Flower names
Rowan
Lea/Leah (meadow)
Robin
Swan
Sunny
Cat Kat (full name Catherine/ Katrina etc)

Gatekeeper · 03/10/2022 19:28

Tadpole also good

Thedeepdeepsea · 03/10/2022 19:29

Ameanstreakamilewide · 03/10/2022 19:18

What's wrong with normal, human names?

Genuine question, what counts as a normal human name? I ask because I think this may be the point that DH is trying to make

I don't mind the name but it's probably because my youngest DS went to school with a girl who had this name. He has learning disabilities and she was always really nice to him and kept an eye out for him. She would be about twenty-four now.

tillytoodles1 · 03/10/2022 19:30

I know an Ocean, she's 4 and really cute. When she grows up she can be Shan like a sortening of Shannon, or Sian if she doesn't like her full name.

I like it Smile

AuntSalli · 03/10/2022 19:36

I know a teenage ocean and also a river. They are from a family of more unusual names but like so what

RoseBucket · 03/10/2022 19:36

Not sure but agree on Marina, beautiful name.

AuntSalli · 03/10/2022 19:37

I also know a little sunny and a little wren and a teenage skye all gorgeous girls

Cheeselog · 03/10/2022 19:37

Yes, Ocean is awful as are Bear and Swan which are fairly clearly not human names. Marina is nice tonight as is Marissa. What about Odette as an alternative to swan?
Or:
Laurel
Robyn
Flora
Lily
Rose
Iris
Siân
Aisling

onlythreenow · 03/10/2022 19:38

Try to imagine introducing yourself as an adult as Ocean. It’s cruel to a child & ridiculous and embarrassing for an adult!

I don't live in the UK but there is a young woman in my town named Ocean. I don't believe she has found it "cruel", or "ridiculous and embarassing". Mind you, we aren't as conventional/boring as the UK when it comes to names, and being a very diverse country no-one really turns a hair at any name.

Call your baby whatever you want to - do you really place much faith in MNers and their judgement?
