To call my baby (DD) ‘Ocean’

I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

I was at the supermarket & there was a little girl called Ocean, I know this as it was being shouted often & loudly by the parents.

Honestly, I thought it was ridiculous!

IDidntWearASmileToday · 03/10/2022 18:53

There's a child in DDs school called Ocean, I also know a baby Ocean. I probably wouldn't personally use it but I do quite like it.

Hoolahulahoop · 03/10/2022 18:54

I don’t hate it but why do it ? Why not Azure or something?

I sea what you did with that.

I saw it too, but @Keyansier 's post is a bit fishy tbh. 🐟

Ocean finance

TippyToesKnows · 03/10/2022 18:54

I really like it and don't actually think it's ridiculously out there

poorpaws · 03/10/2022 18:54

I was in Dunelm and the Ocean I heard being screamed at was definitely a boy.

MrsTumblebee · 03/10/2022 18:54

I know a now teenage girl who’s called Ocean and it’s lovely.

LimeCheesecake · 03/10/2022 18:55

It doesn’t matter if we like it or not, your DH doesn’t, so you need to go back to the drawing board and find something you both like. (FWIW, I think Ocean sounds like a boys name, but I can’t think why!)

what do you like about Ocean that we can think of other names you might like that your DH will like too? Do you have any other names you like to give us a feel of your style?

Twizbe · 03/10/2022 18:55

It's not as bad as some I've heard.

But if your husband doesn't like it then keep looking.

When is baby due? He might be one of those people who just need to see the baby to name them

RainbowRabbit33 · 03/10/2022 18:55

Am I the only one who can't wait until her 11th birthday?

Call her whatever you want to, but make sure you agree it with DH especially if it's a more unusual choice. That way you can share the blame if she hates it when she's bigger!!

Don't forget the other Ocean movies.

I’ve taught two ( both girls) who must now be in their thirties so it’s definitely not new.
I loved it, they were lovely girls and I liked calling out their names!

Now, some names, well…. I’ve heard a lot.

MeghansBitch · 03/10/2022 18:58

Awful

MargaretThursday · 03/10/2022 18:58

How pregnant are you?

I remember with #1 at about 2months pregnant I accosted dh and insisted we picked a short list of names that minute and got upset when he didn't really have any thoughts at that moment.
When I got to about 7 months he was as interested as I was. (#2 and #3 were picked during labour so I think I was less excited by it then too)

As an aside I have a budgie called "Ocean".

thenorthsea · 03/10/2022 18:58

I like it but then again look at my username

ErrolTheDragon · 03/10/2022 19:00

It'd be rough on her if she didn't like it and had the hassle of changing it...

It's on a par with other 'nature names' like River, which are quite widely used, so it's not really too 'out there'.

Teal though... must be quackers.

Darbs76 · 03/10/2022 19:00

No it’s not a name really is it. There’s thousands of lovely girls names, surely you can agree on a few actual names?

Backtoreality22 · 03/10/2022 19:00

I know one and I got used to it after a while.

MerryLeg · 03/10/2022 19:00

Awful.

I know a baby Ocean. She’s the little sister to a boy named Navy 😬

honeylulu · 03/10/2022 19:01

I don't think it's "out there" at all. Nature names are quite popular. Not my taste but it would be boring if we all had the same names!

I would say stick to that spelling though. My daughter told me about her friend Oceania at nursery and I thought it was lovely (little girls were all mermaid mad at that time). But then I saw her name on the peg and it was "O'Shea-yana". I'm ashamed to say I rapidly went off it.

Mariposista · 03/10/2022 19:04

If you like sea/element/water names, what about Marina

Ihatecocomelon · 03/10/2022 19:04

I knew someone called Oshian (sounds like ocean).

blubberball · 03/10/2022 19:06

I think it's nice.
