I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

@Thedeepdeepsea

I don't like Ocean, kids are cruel and it the way its used to mean big or wide is just tempting fate.

Love Sunny and quite like Swan.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 04/10/2022 19:05

I like it. I like nature inspired names like Autumn, River, Rowan etc. I can't believe 84% think yabu.

TurquoiseDress · 04/10/2022 19:19

I love the way it's pronounced in France

Kind of Oh-see-Anne

I think it's lovely but can totally see how it won't work well in the UK

But I still love it, although wouldn't have used it for DC!

Chooksnroses · 05/10/2022 11:45

I just heard from my sister in law, and she mentioned the name Aster. I love it!

Anabana99 · 06/10/2022 00:48

French version is quite beautiful and somewhat popular in France and Quebec: Océane…pronounced: « Osé-anne »

BlippiIsAnnoying · 06/10/2022 01:06

How about Roisin? It sounds very similar to my ears and is a beautiful name.

Cat49 · 06/10/2022 02:06

Why not do what Frank Zappa did and call your child moon unit and dweezel? Kind of the same idea. River, Sky or Star those sound-like names. but Ocean? First kid is going to ask your is, are you the Atlantic or the Pacific? Please, Please be kind to your child.

Jim34 · 06/10/2022 02:07

Nothing wrong with it at all, unless your last name or a middle name will make it into a joke, like Blue or Vessel or Voyager, etc. It does sound like a girl’s name, though.

CoalCraft · 06/10/2022 05:35

I think it's terrible personally. Met a baby Ocean while DD was in hospital and while I was very complimentary to mum internally I was gobsmacked someone would think it was appropriate for a whole human.

Bella37 · 06/10/2022 06:42

DD has a friend called ocean, I always think though..in this country we tend to call the ocean SEA (uk) Although sea would be a ridiculous name 😂. I have heard of a lot worse names and it’s not uncommon as there are a few at DD school.

StridTheKiller · 06/10/2022 06:46

YANBU. There are many many Rivers, so why not? My rule is though, offbeat first name, bog standard middle name/s for options later in life, ie. Ocean Elizabeth Jane Surname.
Far better than the curresea of Avas, Amelias and Olivias.

FarmGirl78 · 06/10/2022 09:24

I hope your surname isn't Finance.

Looking at the ONS data, there were multiple children named Ocean-Blu(e) last year. Honestly I don’t know what goes through people’s minds to make them think that’s a good name for their child.

Ocean is a lovely name!
It is not embarrassing!
It is much better than Apple, when I heard that I thought:Apple what??
Ocean is part of my name.
I believe it is a name that will be evocative of nice calmness & other good things.
Willow is a nice name: evocative of nice calmness.

StarOcean7 · 06/10/2022 13:09

“Storm” is a negative first name or any part!
Horrible, horrible name! Ridiculous name.

Inagine if your first name is Gail which means “The Father’s Joy” & people would tease when I became an adult that I was a storm! Absolutely not! Absolutely cruel teasing!

There was a actress actually named “Gale Storm”, she probably got teased, if not y’all would do it nowadays, I am sure!

”Ocean” is not a cruel name. Husband is being negative & cruel & unreasonable!

WoopsIdiditagain1 · 06/10/2022 13:17

I know an Ocean and she is amazing. I love the name. Along those lines I also like Wren, Willow, Nova, Rain, River and Luna. Your OH needs to come up with his own list.

edenhills · 06/10/2022 13:26

I know an adult (male) named Ocean, I think its a lovely name.

BongoJim · 03/10/2022 18:46

Please, no. It was no classier when the main man of East 17 did it.

His other kid was called Atlanta, as I remember (showing me age!).

Obviously a fan of sea themes.

Butchyrestingface · 06/10/2022 13:29

but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name

Doesn't matter what anyone on this thread thinks. Your husband doesn't like it out so it's a no-no.

He needs to get his skates on though and come with something you can shoot down.

Butchyrestingface · 06/10/2022 13:30

BlippiIsAnnoying · 06/10/2022 01:06

It does! Grin

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 10/10/2022 20:17

How about Typhoon or Cyclical?

Just sit down and talk names through with your partner. It really doesn't have to be a pretentious, 'out there ' name.

Schoolrunrum · 10/10/2022 21:50

Just came along to make sure you weren't my sister who wanted name her baby Ocean. She had a boy, thank God!

EDJE · 14/10/2022 10:01

OK KAN GAAN POKEREN

Bellaboo01 · 14/10/2022 10:06

Call your baby what you want. It isnt anyone else's business BUT, you have asked on a public forum what people think, so here goes..............I think it is awful 😳

VoiceaFromUranus · 14/10/2022 11:00

Before births are registered, the registrar should make people go to the nearest window and shout out "NAME OF CHILD, come in for your tea" or something along those lines. If you don't fancy doing it then the name isn't going to work is it?
Ocean? Such a deep and meaningful name. Are you a little blue today? And all the ships who sail in her...and so on and so on. Kids are inventive little bastards, just remember that.
