To call my baby (DD) ‘Ocean’

I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

I'd go with the french version; it seems to be more established as a name. Other french origin names are used regularly here already.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 03/10/2022 19:59

You’ve not said what country you are in but I think it’s quite common in America or Australia. Definitely heard people called it before.

I think it’s nice but my partner would never like it either. (Too hippy dippy for him).

Noteverybodylives · 03/10/2022 19:59

For heaven’s sake, can’t we just go back to Sarah, Hannah, Rachel, Claire and Louise and have done with all this nonsense about pushing our own individuality on to our kids? They’re children, not dolls.

Those names were ‘out there’ back in the day.

They’re also white, British names and it means that no other culture can call their child anything else because people like you think they’re nonsense.

You can call your kids something that makes them blend it and not feel
special.

But don’t offend entire communities of people because their kids aren’t called Sarah or Claire.

Growing up all of my friends called Sarah, Hannah etc hated it because there would be about 10 of them in each year group.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 03/10/2022 20:00

Daft.
Your child will be laughed at.

Heathershimmerwasmyshade · 03/10/2022 20:01

12 years from now at high school… I smell something fishy! High school jokes and all that. Kids can be cruel.

why not get a dog and call it something different instead of a poor child?

We are in the UK

I like the name Ocean.
I’ve never heard of it before but I can see it growing on me.

However, if DH isn’t a fan then you need to find something else.
You need to both be in agreement.

RobertaTheRobot · 03/10/2022 20:02

I like it 🤷

Anonymouslyposting · 03/10/2022 20:04

Congratulations on your baby! Choosing names can be so tricky, we took weeks after DD was born to settle on her name.

I really wouldn’t go for Ocean though - it’s a pretty sounding word but too gimmicky and wouldn’t be taken seriously once she’s an adult looking for proper jobs etc.

User23567 · 03/10/2022 20:04

I like it a lot, I also like “Portofino” as a name

KeepOutingMyselfAnotherNameChange · 03/10/2022 20:06

I know a lovely child called Ocean. Really beautiful, calm child.

VeridicalVagabond · 03/10/2022 20:07

I hate it, but only because I knew an Ocean and she was a twat. She ended up with the lovely nickname of Shit Water too, which started when someone pointed out that "oh shit" and "ocean" sound fairly similar, and then teenage boys extrapolated from there, as they do. So she was Shit Water for four years.

Then again I knew a Jack who ended up with the nickname Clunge Boy which he still gets called today at 34 years of age so I don't think anyone is really safe from teenagers giving out stupid nicknames.

I'd say it's a no-go regardless if your husband doesn't like it. You should both agree on a name really.

Charlavail · 03/10/2022 19:50

I've taught a fair few Oceans. Why is Sky a name but Ocean isn't?

Coz the snob Police on MN say so.

I think Ocean is lovely, but then I'm an old hippy. Its a lot better than another Olivia.

scarletisjustred · 03/10/2022 20:08

I am a fan of Marina. It's classic, easy to spell and you can imagine a High Court judge with the name.

AutumnIsHere21 · 03/10/2022 20:09

I currently teach a 14 year old Ocean and have taught one before in a previous school. Both lovely.

Confrontayshunme · 03/10/2022 20:10

I have met several Oceans teaching (boys and girls), and all of them were super annoying and their parents had a laidback hippy vibe due to giving them an laternative, cool name but were actually really overbearing and also annoying. Go with River, Storm, or similar.

Sarah, Rachel and Hannah were in the Bible. Been millennia since they were “out there”.

Totalityloss · 03/10/2022 20:11

I know an Ocean. It’s a lovely name. It’s often abbreviated to Osshee.

Trinity65 · 03/10/2022 20:11

Yes you are

What is it with these out there words as names lately??

Yes, well, at least they are normal names!!
Is it a contest these days to find the most stupid words as names for offspring??

TurquoiseDress · 03/10/2022 20:13

Ooooooh I do love this name...but the French version

Océane is a pretty girls name in France...but it just wouldn't work here in the UK

erinaceus · 03/10/2022 20:15

If you like watery names, I met an Aqualine once. Shortened to Aqua. It suited her.

Anotherguy · 03/10/2022 20:16

Abbreviated but it’s longer?

Yabado · 03/10/2022 20:16

Oh my neighbour is called Oceanna
I did think it was a bit strange as I remember going to a nightclub called the same 😂
but it really suited her tall long blonde hair very pretty - bit like Daryl Hannah in Mermaid😂

ladygindiva · 03/10/2022 20:16

VestaTilley · 03/10/2022 19:43

It’s awful. Think what kind of a job she could (or couldn’t) do with a name like that.

For heaven’s sake, can’t we just go back to Sarah, Hannah, Rachel, Claire and Louise and have done with all this nonsense about pushing our own individuality on to our kids? They’re children, not dolls.

Mum is that you ?
