To find some language offensive about the funeral?

Out at the pub tonight and talk turns to the queens funeral.

Im not an ardent royalist or anything but I will be watching as a historical event and in recognition of the queens service.

My friend is very left wing and said ‘I won’t be watching, fuck that,, fuck the monarchy, I won’t be watching to save the electric’. (This is someone who does not have to count the pennies).

AIBU to say this was a bit offensive, and a simple ‘I won’t be watching, it’s not for me’ would have been fine and respectful to people who do want to watch,

It almost seems as though being offensive is ‘cool’.

More likely frustration at how ubiquitous it is right now, I mean almost every tv channel showing the same thing tomorrow - what’s the point ? One would be enough.

BitOutOfPractice · 18/09/2022 23:52

I think you decide whether or not you’re offended by that. I wouldn’t be because I largely agree. I’m more offended by all the deferential forelock tugging bullshit to be honest. But there you go, we’re all different.

asblindasabat · 18/09/2022 23:54

You’re not alone OP. I was just talking to DH earlier about how disgusting some people’s remarks are.

she was an elderly woman who gave 70 years of her life to us. I admired her and my heart breaks that she is gone. I can’t even believe it when I think about it.

People should keep their hatred thoughts to themselves

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/09/2022 23:55

You are being oversensitive.

Your friend isn’t interested and is bored because it’s everywhere. She’s just expressing that.

Hear hear. All that braindead nonsense about the nation’s granny and sycophantic admiration for a woman primarily noted for looking dutifulinhsts and never saying anything is pretty spectacularly offensive to me. But I’m not starting threads to grouse about it.

Why is your heart breaking though? I have nothing against her, think she did a good job, if I wasn’t working I’d watch a bit of the funeral.

It felt like a rush of history when she died, because it was. But she was 96, feeling that your heart is breaking and you can’t believe it is somewhat extreme.

Veganwolf · 18/09/2022 23:59

People can express themselves however they wish to, obviously within reason and i think YABU here. We tend to live in our own echo Chambers, especially online. I read somewhere that 'many things can be true at once' and this is how I make peace with other people's opinions. Yep i can see how people are sad the Queen died. Yep I can see how the expense of the funeral can seem like a slap in the face with the cost of living crisis.

Why is your heart breaking? Was she a relative of yours?

Because she was such a constant in my life and she’s the only monarch I’ve known.

She did do a good job. She just reminded me of an old, sweet and frail granny. I think that’s why I feel so sad.

I doubt I’ll feel this way when Charles dies. I like him and I think he’ll do a good job, but I doubt I would feel as sad as I do about the Queen. She was a one off.

StoneofDestiny · 19/09/2022 00:02

I'm more offended by ££Billions of taxpayers money being spent on promoting the royals as some sort of indispensable family.
I'm also sick of hearing about her 70 Years of Service. She was the highest paid person in the country for her 'service' - handsomely rewarded by getting jobs for life for her idle family, palaces, servants to cater for every wish and whim, and only recently started paying taxes because she was forced to! Oh and this funeral, planned by her and Charles, has not cost her 'loving family' one penny piece.
That's galling - we have an NHS on its knees, public service and transport workers demanding a living wage that keep up with inflation and that gets refused - but ££Billions on a funeral is easily found. Scandalous

Arenanewbie · 19/09/2022 00:02

Was it unusual that your friend used so many swearing words in the conversation?

gnilliwdog · 19/09/2022 00:03

Blimey, my heart breaks when I walk past a beggar on the street, or when another girl or boy goes missing and turns up dead.

BMW6 · 19/09/2022 00:04

I'd have just said Yeah, Whatever. She was in righteous rant mode so no point in talking about it.

ManateeFair · 19/09/2022 00:05

Perhaps they find it offensive that we have a monarchy at all.

They’re allowed to be offensive. You are allowed to be offended.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 19/09/2022 00:05

All I know for sure is that the Queens passing has really brought out the worst in some people.

I have heard relentlessly that anyone who’s upset, anyone who attended the vigil, anyone who will be watching the funeral, is a monarchist-loving half wit of lower social class.

Oddly, I’m yet to hear those from the other side shout down obscenities at those who are choosing not to do any of the above. “You won’t be watching?! You’re a sheep! You’re a hysterical republican” nope.. can’t say I’ve heard anything of the sort. All the vitriol and judgement is coming predominately (bordering entirely) from one side…

Nameless3 · 19/09/2022 00:00

No she wasn’t.

i never thought I’d feel so sad about her passing but I’ve proven myself wrong.

She just came across as sweet and elegant and she was just like a wee innocent grandma. I guess that’s why I feel so sad.

She had a good long life but still I feel quite sad about her passing.

NoMoneyHun · 19/09/2022 00:06

I wouldn't lose sleep over it. You're being overly sensitive.

I think everyone needs to give their head a wobble. Not everyone is going to be falling over themselves about this fanfare of a funeral I'm afraid.

It's been like that for a while. Certain people just cannot say "I don't believe that being a monarchy works for a democracy because reasons...". Instead they try and throw as many insults as they can think of into a sentence: "scroungers", "lizards" etc.

It just shows their lack of intellect to be honest, unable to construct a coherent argument.

HeddaGarbled · 19/09/2022 00:09

Yeah, it’s a pose. Only young people trying to impress say “fuck the monarchy”. More mature people might have similar opinions but would express it more articulately.

Eddieisadick · 19/09/2022 00:10

aww yes a wee innocent grandma that gave £12m to her son to avoid court over sex trafficking / paedophilia. Run of the mill

Why can't her friend just say: "no, I'm not interested" then? Or by "expressing that", do you mean like when a feral child is "expressing" themselves?

Gilead · 19/09/2022 00:11

I rather think the expenditure is a tad tone deaf given the forthcoming utilities crisis.

🤦🏼‍♀️

I don’t like this new song from the Sex Pistols.

Hazelmary18 · 19/09/2022 00:12

They are in the minority so don't let it bother you. Just look at the thousands of people who have queued to pay their respects. The funeral will be watched around the world by millions of people, it will go down in history. One person in the pub turning their TV off in protest won't make the slightest difference! If anything I feel sorry for them, missing out on such a historical moment that will be talked about for a long long time.
