To find some language offensive about the funeral?

Out at the pub tonight and talk turns to the queens funeral.

Im not an ardent royalist or anything but I will be watching as a historical event and in recognition of the queens service.

My friend is very left wing and said ‘I won’t be watching, fuck that,, fuck the monarchy, I won’t be watching to save the electric’. (This is someone who does not have to count the pennies).

AIBU to say this was a bit offensive, and a simple ‘I won’t be watching, it’s not for me’ would have been fine and respectful to people who do want to watch,

It almost seems as though being offensive is ‘cool’.

I think that’s an over reaction and rude. I also won’t be watching and I’m not a royalist but it’s someone’s funeral regardless.

couldn’t put it better myself

Be Kind, what a load of horse shit. Be Kind (unless it's something I don't agree with, then all bets are off and I'll be as offensive as I like)

The issue with saying 'don't discuss the future of the monarchy now, it's disrespectful, she's only just died'...is that a new King was declared before she was even cold. So the RF isn't hanging around to continue the status quo.

This wasn't the Royal Family muscling in and Charles pushily making sure he got made king before people could think.... Like it or not, the passing from Queen to King is automatic in our constitution (albeit unwritten).

When the monarch dies, the next in line becomes monarch immediately, without so much as a millisecond of gap.

By all means campaign to change that, but expecting there to be a vacancy until the country has decided who should be Head of State and how they are appointed, is crazy. We'd potentially be years in constitutional limbo as the Government organises a Referendum, and then years more wrangling as to how the result is implemented.

The whole be kind thing has always been irredeemably awful.

I'm more offended by ££Billions of taxpayers money being spent on promoting the royals as some sort of indispensable family.
I'm also sick of hearing about her 70 Years of Service. She was the highest paid person in the country for her 'service' - handsomely rewarded by getting jobs for life for her idle family, palaces, servants to cater for every wish and whim, and only recently started paying taxes because she was forced to! Oh and this funeral, planned by her and Charles, has not cost her 'loving family' one penny piece.
That's galling - we have an NHS on its knees, public service and transport workers demanding a living wage that keep up with inflation and that gets refused - but ££Billions on a funeral is easily found. Scandalous

@StoneofDestiny completely agree.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/09/2022 08:00

op you were in the pub!
people are entitled to their opinions, as harsh as some are.
a colleague at work would also say similar no doubt
we dont all have to have the same opinions in this country

cansu · 19/09/2022 08:02

I think all this excessive hysteria and pretence that people actually knew the queen was this or that rather offensive tbh. Your friend is entitled to that opinion. You are entitled to be hysterical.

Hearthnhome · 19/09/2022 08:03

The vast majority of people pay tax because they are forced to. Makes me laugh when people think we all pay tax like it’s voluntary.

I guarantee many many people in this country would not pay tax if they didn’t have to.

and billions has not been spent on the funeral.

Again, plenty to critique in the RF, without embellishing stories.

Tuilpmouse · 19/09/2022 08:03

The queen’s death is sad for her family but absolutely not a national tragedy

I don't know anyone who's said it's a tragedy. The Queen's death is sad and momentous for the country, but at 96, is hardly tragic.

Ziggysharko · 19/09/2022 08:03

I think a lot of people are projecting.

There are a lot of responses saying she was like a sweet old lady; a granny type figure. Which makes sense if you had a nice granny. It falls into the fallacy that all old ladies are lovely and can do no wrong.

ReneBumsWombats · 19/09/2022 08:04

One of the reasons I liked her was because I didn't think she was a sweet old lady. I thought she was a fucking badass one.

There is another thread going where people are "heart broken" really?

Suzi888 · 19/09/2022 08:11

gnilliwdog · 19/09/2022 00:03

Blimey, my heart breaks when I walk past a beggar on the street, or when another girl or boy goes missing and turns up dead.

Yes, but would you express it by saying ‘another fucking hungry beggar’, fucking hell”.

I think people are just angry, disrespectful, rude, selfish and self absorbed. Only their opinion matters, there’s no live and let live anymore.

I have hardly seen any coverage. Watch Netflix, read a book, get outside. Plenty to do!

RaginaPhalange · 19/09/2022 08:12

That’s a lot of projection onto a woman who was born into extraordinary privilege, inherited her role, never had to strive, lived at an unimaginable distance from her subjects, and whose importance stems largely from wearing brightly-coloured hats and never saying anything.

I don’t know anyone that’s isn’t completely over it.

It was based more on her being a wartime mechanic and ambulance driver, and then a head of state throughout all sorts of crap for 70 years while wearing headscarves and enjoying breeding dogs. Also, she did say stuff and some of it was rather funny. Like cutting a cake with a huge sword, being told there was a knife and responding, "I know there is!" Or asking Boris Johnson, "Are you supposed to look like you're enjoying yourself?"

theworldhas · 19/09/2022 08:18

said ‘I won’t be watching, fuck that,, fuck the monarchy, I won’t be watching to save the electric

what you mean is you were offended. “offensive” is a subjective term.
Had she said fuck the Tories/Labour/Communist Party/gas companies/Facebook you probably wouldn’t have been offended.
so you’re not unreasonable to find the language offensive, but it doesn’t mean you’re right, or that she was wrong to express her feelings.

generalh · 19/09/2022 08:18

Can't wait for the whole effing thing to be over.

asblindasabat · 19/09/2022 00:01

Because she was such a constant in my life and she’s the only monarch I’ve known.

She did do a good job. She just reminded me of an old, sweet and frail granny. I think that’s why I feel so sad.

I doubt I’ll feel this way when Charles dies. I like him and I think he’ll do a good job, but I doubt I would feel as sad as I do about the Queen. She was a one off.

Sorry but what? She was a constant in your life? You absolutely cannot say that with a straight face. What exactly did she do for you to have been such a constant force in your life apart from hearing about something she did a few times a year?

MumCanIDoThat · 19/09/2022 08:20

montysma1 · 19/09/2022 01:01

She didnt give 70 years of her life to me. She had literally no effect on my life.

Exactly !! People have just bought into this hysteria, it's ridiculous and hilarious at the same time.
