To waste £2000!

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:10

I had a new carpet fitted about 18 months ago which cost £2000 (big room). However, now I want a real wood floor which is going to cost £6000. Is it really bad of me to waste all that money and offer the carpet for free to anyone who wants it and replace it with the wooden floor?

If 6k would be a very big chunk of your savings, you’d be better off holding on to your savings, at least until after winter.

Also getting a wooden floor laid may not be quick. We had wooden floors laid following necessary floor repairs/ relaying, We waited months for it to be delivered (bog standard, not fancy!) Not much fun in winter.

My husband will lay it.

So the £6k is just for materials, not labour? And just one room? That does seem very pricey....

Does he have experience in this?

What kind of flooring costs almost £170/m² before it's even fitted?

Yes lots.

If you're going to spend that much on the floor then please get someone who knows what they are doing to put it down.

Yet a few weeks ago someone saying they had inherited £250 K and everyone was saying "Oh how lovely"

Someone's good fortune is not tacky. Pretending to ask strangers for permission to waste a chunk of money on a whim, in difficult economic times, is.

Ted Todd plus underlay skirting etc.

Financially and environmentally it’s extremely wasteful. No getting away from it I’m afraid.

If you’re describing your savings as ‘meagre’ I think you’re off your rocker pissing away money on a floor that’s basically brand new but do what you like, you don’t need to justify it to anyone.

Yes I will

This is crazy. Spend your money how you like but of course it's a risk in a cost of living crisis to burn through your limited savings on a whim.

How is it environmentally wasteful if I give it to someone else?

Goodo. Does leave me wondering what the point of this thread is though??? Couldn’t you have just posted about your new floor if you wanted to gush?

girlmom21 · 15/09/2022 12:48

I think it's fine if you've got £6000 and both agree it's what you want.
That was some posh ass carpet you bought so please do pass it on or sell it if you can.

It won’t be provided you actually find someone to make use of it.

Whisperedew · 15/09/2022 12:49

If you don’t like carpet you can get vinyl for about £100

I am not gushing. I have worked all of my life and saved money by not spending on holidays, make up , nails, hair, clothes, fancy nights out, meals etc.

Okay, well done. And, as a result, you have access to some savings. That's your security. It's precious.

SavingsThreads · 15/09/2022 12:24

Are you getting ripped off a lot? £2k for a carpet is mad, and most people can't afford £6k on new flooring on a whim, even if they do earn a lot

But a lot of people can afford it.

Rentaroom33 · 15/09/2022 12:51

its a want not a need so for me it would be a big waste!! I would wait a year or two to be honest @Stangerthings i personally would be afraid that something more important would pop up and that 6k could go to better use. But that’s just me…

Ok. good for you.

I’m just trying to working out what you wanted from your question? Justification either way? It doesn’t seem like it since you’ve clearly already made your mind up.

genuinely - the property board is probably better placed for discussions about flooring. AIBU is an odd place for your question 🤷‍♀️

OP, someone has to keep the economy going so go ahead.
