To waste £2000!

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:10

I had a new carpet fitted about 18 months ago which cost £2000 (big room). However, now I want a real wood floor which is going to cost £6000. Is it really bad of me to waste all that money and offer the carpet for free to anyone who wants it and replace it with the wooden floor?

I’d rather spend £100 on wood effect vinyl and use £5900 on living my life and making memories. But up to you.

Bestcatmum · 15/09/2022 12:54

You can do what you want with your own money - you don't have to explain yourself to anyone, I don't.
I've got to say though I hate my wood flooring, its the first house I've lived in without carpet. It collects dust bunnies non stop and I am forever cleaning and it feels cold in winter.

Mabelstearooms · 15/09/2022 12:55

What is the purpose of this thread? You're going to do what you want regardless of the answers here.

Greengagesnfennel · 15/09/2022 12:55

That's a big space to have all wood. It could be noisy and cold feeling.

How nice is the carpet? Is it possible to get it cut in a rectangle and edge whipped with wool to turn it into a rug?

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:56

Ok. I will spend £5.500 on shoes and waste the rest.

Buy the flooring you want, the justification…because you want it. Your home is your everything may as well be perfect for you.

creamwitheverything · 15/09/2022 12:57

just read the first page sorry but do it ..we all make interior mistakes all the time you dont have to live with it,If you want to change then just change ..we live and learn! I have made epic mistakes including a full kitchen!!!! go for it!

goshdoyoumeantobsorude · 15/09/2022 12:57

I am pretty secure money wise but even I would not pull up a perfectly good £2k carpet and spend £6k on wooden flooring. I would spend it on a holiday; but I wouldn't cancel a holiday where I have paid a £2k deposit and go on one for £6k instead.

If you want it and the £6k is not better left in your account go for it.

No need for petulance - you set the tone of the thread with your title.

FeatherBlower · 15/09/2022 12:58

I’m desperate for new carpets if you’re giving away!

all joking aside OP, if it makes you happy and you can afford it do what you want. Make sure that new carpet goes to a good, deserving home to someone locally or look up a charity or local club that might need it and enjoy your new wood flooring.

SatinHeart · 15/09/2022 12:58

It's your house and your money, OP. With inflation being what it is then you may was well do it now if you're sure it's what you want.

Teenyliving · 15/09/2022 12:58

Call a domestic violence charity and they will snap up the offer

I don't think you can get many full pairs of shoes for £5.50 anymore.

yellowtwo · 15/09/2022 13:00

Enjoy your home OP, change the flooring if that's what you want. Really nice idea to give the carpet to someone else.

goshdoyoumeantobsorude · 15/09/2022 13:00

Actually just see the flooring ....go for it!
It is divine, might increase the value of your home,

Ponoka7 · 15/09/2022 13:01

Hanging on to the carpet when you aren't happy with it is sunk cost fallacy. What you are buying is an investment in your home. While a cost of living crisis is happening, not everyone will be equally affected. Many will have more job security than ever before and can easily absorb the extra costs. We need people to keep spending money.

Lordofmyflies · 15/09/2022 13:02

if you have the money and can afford it, why not? Can you use the carpet in a different room/ s?

Fairyliz · 15/09/2022 13:04

findingsomeone · 15/09/2022 12:18

I mean it depends on your means. I've just forked out under £3k for new sandstone tiles in my kitchen and bathroom and winced at that. I've wanted to replace the crappy vinyl the whole five years we've lived here as it's wrinkly and hard to clean. Our income is above average and we have the savings to do it, and I've still had guilt over whether that's wasteful Blush

@findingsomeone
I think replacing something old and crappy with something good quality is an excellent idea.
The op however seems to be replacing a relatively new expensive carpet with something even more costly which seems excessive and wasteful.

Herejustforthisone · 15/09/2022 13:04

Could you not sell the new carpet @Stangerthings ? I sold all my off-cuts for quite a few hundred. The company had over ordered though and it was a good carpet.

Snoken · 15/09/2022 13:04

HalzTangz · 15/09/2022 12:31

It's a rip off. I did two double bedrooms, lounge, dining room and kitchen for half what you paid for one room

You carpeted your kitchen?

OP, do what makes you happy. As long as the carpet can come to good use elsewhere I can't see an issue with your plan. I hate carpets personally, and would choose wooden floors (proper wood, not the plastic stuff) any day.

Alright, if that makes you happy, do you.

OneCup · 15/09/2022 13:08

Considering you say your savings are meagre, I wouldn't go ahead if I were you. The next few months will be quite tough going. Carpet also keeps the heat. Maybe at least wait till next year?

Cinnabomb · 15/09/2022 13:12

Honestly @Stangerthings i think wood floors are fabulous, so I would do it if that’s what I wanted. I’m not sure why you put new carpet down /
changed your mind tho and that seems odd. What I would advise is why don’t you live with the nice warm carpet over the winter to keep your house cosy and then do it in the spring?
