To waste £2000!

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:10

I had a new carpet fitted about 18 months ago which cost £2000 (big room). However, now I want a real wood floor which is going to cost £6000. Is it really bad of me to waste all that money and offer the carpet for free to anyone who wants it and replace it with the wooden floor?

I really need a new bedroom carpet and have no money - so if it's going spare ....

Seriously you could have it with pleasure but the logistics would be a nightmare.

JaneJeffer · 15/09/2022 12:29

Can you use it in another room?

No nothing wrong. I ask the question as I am not well off and the wooden floor would be a big chunk of my meagre saving. However as I have said, I dont go on holiday, nights out, new clothes etc.

How much is a big chunk. If you would be able to cope with the huge massive energy price increase and still have 3-6 months income saved up then I say do what you want

No already got. I think I will put it on facebook for free.

Maybe wait until next spring. So you get the benefit over winter.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/09/2022 12:31

If you have meagre savings, I'd hold on to them and stick with the carpet. Between the increase in energy, food, fuel, energy, mortgage rates and interest in general, it seems reckless to change a flooring you chose only 18 months ago.

HalzTangz · 15/09/2022 12:31

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:26

No its a very big room and the price also included the hall and stairs.

It's a rip off. I did two double bedrooms, lounge, dining room and kitchen for half what you paid for one room

Lakeyloo · 15/09/2022 12:32

Your money. Not really anyone else's business but I would be inclined to try and live with it for a bit but if you really can't, do you have another room that is likely to need re carpeting soon? You could use the carpet in there.

YelloCar · 15/09/2022 12:32

wrong. I ask the question as I am not well off
If you’re really genuinely not well off then it’s probably not a good idea to spend £8k on flooring (and then I assume more on rugs on top
of that?).

Maybe wait until after winter and decide then: A carpet will keep you warmer during that time and bills will have increased so you’ll have a better idea of whether you really want to spend that £6k+.

Maybe OP had fancier carpet?

FourTeaFallOut · 15/09/2022 12:33

And as a general heads up, if you have kids, wooden stairs make it sound like you are living with a troop of elephants.

Some people spend their money on holidays, I prefer to spend it on my house.

This thread is a ridiculous unnecessaryness, why do you care what anyone else thinks? Clearly you're a grown up with the money

What on earth is the purpose of asking?

No I dont intend to do the stairs or the hall. The carpet already down will stay.

There is little purpose the many of the threads on here.

Go on holiday and maybe you'll rethink pissing 6k all over the floor

Caspianberg · 15/09/2022 12:35

That seems pretty expensive for one room? We spent around that recently on local oak solid wood flooring. That was for 130m2 (3 rooms downstairs, 3 rooms upstairs, both hallways and all staircase.)

Well, they'd pick it up from you.

I think it's very wasteful indeed but it's your life and your money.

Not everyone is able to go on holiday so like to do up their home instead

So many nasty comments! I do not want to go on holiday.

There’s a huge price difference per metre with carpets though isn’t there? A £9.99/m carpet will obviously cost less for the space than an £89.99/m carpet.

Asperia · 15/09/2022 12:37

Why are you asking us OP? Of course you can do whatever you want. A description of such financial waste is going to be a sour taste in the mouth for anyone on here financially struggling though. You don't really care what a group of random strangers think, why are you asking? A bit tasteless tbh.

iwantasandwich · 15/09/2022 12:37

@HalzTangz

You're aware that the pricing of carpet varies based on its quality

So hardly a rip off unless you got the exact same carpet

Yet a few weeks ago someone saying they had inherited £250 K and everyone was saying "Oh how lovely"

Inertia · 15/09/2022 12:39

If 6k would be a very big chunk of your savings, you’d be better off holding on to your savings, at least until after winter.

Also getting a wooden floor laid may not be quick. We had wooden floors laid following necessary floor repairs/ relaying, We waited months for it to be delivered (bog standard, not fancy!) Not much fun in winter.

Antarcticant · 15/09/2022 12:39

I have a solution. Set up as a professional dog sitter for a few months. You'll make some of your money back and your carpet will be ruined so you can justify replacing it.
