To waste £2000!

I had a new carpet fitted about 18 months ago which cost £2000 (big room). However, now I want a real wood floor which is going to cost £6000. Is it really bad of me to waste all that money and offer the carpet for free to anyone who wants it and replace it with the wooden floor?

Your money, your decision, but it does seem very wasteful - unless you can give away or sell the carpet to be reused, not great environmentally. Also, i would not recommend hard wood floors. We have them and anything you drop or move makes a mark.

I ask the question as I am not well off and the wooden floor would be a big chunk of my meagre saving.

Wtf!! Just read this. If £2k represents a “big chunk” of your savings and you haven’t been on holiday for 4 years…. Then OP, you are not even remotely in a comfortable enough portion to be doing this.
i had thought you were very comfortably off.

£2k being a “big chunk” of your savings and nothing spent on any holidays for 4 years….. nah op. You need to keep that money. Expensive tastes, small budget!

Do you have children op?

£6k would be enough for a deposit for a 3 bedroom flat in Scotland. Just some perspective.

We spent a lot of money in our house getting the original wooden floors restored. They looked absolutely beautiful but Jesus it was cold. In the winter it was like walking in ice so we carpeted the whole lot except the hallway, no way I’d give up carpet for wooden floor again no matter how beautiful it looked especially not if I’d spent £2,000 on a carpet. However it’s your house and if you have the money and can find a hime for the carpet then go for it.

Well to be honest…. I know what I would spend £6k if a choice between this and a hard wood floor.

I'd love a carpet in my lounge but we have a scruffy dog so it wouldn't be wise.

Doingprettywellthanks · 15/09/2022 16:49

Are you unreasonable to pull up a £2k carpet and install a £6k hardwood floor? No!!!

Are you in a financial position to remotely do this when this will be a “big chunk” of your savings? No OP. Not even close

Gufo · 15/09/2022 17:44

Could you sell it to get some money back?

No nothing wrong. I ask the question as I am not well off and the wooden floor would be a big chunk of my meagre saving. However as I have said, I dont go on holiday, nights out, new clothes etc.

Well You're being absolutely ridiculous then if the new floor would take up a large part of your admittedly meagres savings, that's just bonkers, especially given the financial situation we're facing at the moment.

You liked the new carpet enough to spend £2,000 on it not even 2 years ago so talk yourself down

Summerslam · 15/09/2022 20:16

I assumed you were minted when you posted this originally. Now it appears you're not. Ask yourself why it is so important to blow so much money on flooring. Are you trying to impress people? You need to get your priorities right, and maybe have a wee holiday to think about it.

Purplelion · 15/09/2022 21:27

I don’t understand how you can describe your savings as meagre and have £6k to spend on new flooring 18 months after spending £2k on carpet! I did my whole house for half of that 18 months ago and it’s still in lovely condition.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 16/09/2022 18:59

I dont think anyone ever said on their deathbed I wish I'd bought less carpets.
