To waste £2000!

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:10

I had a new carpet fitted about 18 months ago which cost £2000 (big room). However, now I want a real wood floor which is going to cost £6000. Is it really bad of me to waste all that money and offer the carpet for free to anyone who wants it and replace it with the wooden floor?

I'd put underfloor heating in too, while I was at it. We had it in our flat in Germany and it was fantastic. I've never, ever been warm during winter except for our time living there.

And spend your money how you like. We are extremely frugal but choose to splurge on a really nice meal every now and then. And I'm sure that someone would love to take the carpet off your hands. Why don't you sell it at a low price to offset some of the cost of your new floor?

HikingforScenery · 15/09/2022 14:13

Change your flooring if you want. It’s your money.
Feel free to give the carpet to meeeeee!!!😁

Ok. I will spend £5.500 on shoes and waste the rest.

OP, you're coming across a little snarky here. You asked if it would be bad to waste that money, posters have responded in the affirmative. Why get snippy? You do realise why your post may seem a little goody, given the current financial climate, and the fact that you appear to have already made up your mind?

Maybe wait until next spring. So you get the benefit over winter.

I would do this. At least get some use and benefit from a new carpet before you give it away.

DillDanding · 15/09/2022 14:21

I hate carpet so yanbu.

ClaryFairchild · 15/09/2022 14:23

Timber is very expensive at the moment. For that reason alone I'd personally wait another year or 2 for prices to hopefully come down.

Thesage · 15/09/2022 14:27

I would revisit the idea in a few months or early next year. You might have just got caught up in the moment (like you were 18 months ago), so leave it for a few months and see how you feel then.

Cliopatra1 · 15/09/2022 14:41

Ignore people making nasty comments. Having money to spend tends to get peoples backs up on here for some reason. Why not keep the carpet for a few years get some use out of it, then put down the flooring you want.

tiredwardsister · 15/09/2022 14:44

I've put wooden floors down all through my house it costs £££ and I love them I have pets and they are so easy to keep clean, I personally don't find them any colder than carpet. But I haven't put them in my living room which is a little bigger than yours. Here we've put the wooden floor round then edge and a rug in the middle, under the rug is underlay, it just feels more cosy. How about taking up the carpet and have it made into a rug (I believe you can do this) and put wooden floor round the edge then you get the best of both worlds?

cinnabongene · 15/09/2022 14:46

You do you

Debz100 · 15/09/2022 14:46

Your money - spend it as you wish!

Beezknees · 15/09/2022 14:51

YANBU to do what you want with your money, however I don't know why you're going on about holidays and nights out. You must be aware that the people struggling to pay the energy bill do not have holidays and nights out, it's not "either or" for most people. If you have £6k spare to spend on flooring you're very privileged.

Adversity · 15/09/2022 14:52

I think it really depends on what % of your savings that is if it’s 5% or 50% would influence my personal choice.,

nomoreflyingfucks · 15/09/2022 14:53

How warm is your house? We have wooden floor boards and I absolutely hate them (previous owner put them down) reasons why I hate them:
Absolutely pain to keep clean, you really need a proper floor cleaner not just a hoover.
Colder to walk on than carpet,
Easy to slip on them
Poor Ddog can't walk on them so don't do it if you have a dog!
Over the years, the boards nearest the window have faded.
If you drop something on them eg a glass, much more likely to break than a carpeted floor.
The acoustics, with no carpet to absorb the sound results in an echo when more than one person is talking!
And finally (maybe because ours were made from reclaimed timbers) but they make the rooms they are in really dark!
We have rugs over most of them which helps, but honestly I think the glossy magazine look, really doesn't make for practically.
That said I'm sure others love theirs so really it's down to individual choice.

Carrotzen · 15/09/2022 15:01

It's your money and you can do what you like with it.

However 18 months ago you wanted fancy carpet, now you want very expensive wood. Is it actually want you want? Or is it just a whim that will change again in 18mnths? I wouldn't go spending 6k on something when I obviously hadn't been considering it for that long

And can you actually afford it? If you've got 6k to throw away fair enough, but if it's going to be a big chunk of your savings Im not sure it's a good idea in this current climate

My advise would be to sit on it. Get through winter with your existing carpet. If you still really want the wood floor in 6 months, and you can definitely afford it then go for it. But don't just spend 6k for fun

You're not wasting £2k, it's £6k you're wasting as your replacing something perfectly good. Also what was £2k 18 months with inflation is not £2k anymore.

WonderingWanda · 15/09/2022 15:07

I think if you are going to stay there a long time then just plan to get wood next time it needs replacing / updating. I don't think now is the time to squander savings if you haven't got lots to spare.

MeridianB · 15/09/2022 15:11

People can spend their own money however they want.

Starting a thread purely to make a point about how you’re casually shedding £2,000 and spending another £6,000 is pretty grotesque in the current climate, so YABU.

Summerslam · 15/09/2022 15:12

If you can ensure your carpet goes to someone who will really benefit from it, then go ahead and replace it with wooden flooring.

I don't really get the correlation between having a nice home and going on holiday though, it is possible to have both.

JOFFCV · 15/09/2022 15:18

I'd be a gutted at wasting £2,000 away but I've paid that for a holiday once which wasn't all that and was gutted so just do what you want to do - life is short.

Lovely post, OP, so well judged in terms of timing and sentiment.

This. With bells on.

DahliaMacNamara · 15/09/2022 15:21

<joins queue for discarded carpet>

Buy what you want. It's your own money.

Pushymum · 15/09/2022 15:31

Don’t know why you are asking on here. It is your money. I wouldn’t spend £2000 on a carpet for one room in the first place.

RhiWrites · 15/09/2022 15:34

I think you might regret it when your energy bill goes up.
