To waste £2000!

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:10

I had a new carpet fitted about 18 months ago which cost £2000 (big room). However, now I want a real wood floor which is going to cost £6000. Is it really bad of me to waste all that money and offer the carpet for free to anyone who wants it and replace it with the wooden floor?

If you are recycling the carpet then do what makes you happy.

I have friends that say they are skint but spend thousands a year on hair, holidays and nails etc honestly, it's up to you how you spend your hard-earned cash.

NortieTortie · 15/09/2022 13:36

I would wait until after winter. Gives you a good few months to decide that's what you really want/can afford after everything goes up, plus will keep you warmer.

SimonaRazowska · 15/09/2022 13:38

Well, it shows you have a lot of money to be able to do that I guess

so just enjoy being wealthy enough to do things on a whim 😁

What was wrong with the carpet? If you are in the U.K.: we are going into winter and carpet is warmer (but I imagine you don’t need to worry about gas bills either)

do what you want, enjoy being able to. it’s a nice place to be.

Laiste · 15/09/2022 13:40

5m x 7m - a ''very big'' room?

User47484739478474 · 15/09/2022 13:41

If you want it and can afford it that's your choice.

meanwhile, I can't afford to replace my 12 year old carpet that desperately needs replacing 😭

Twillow · 15/09/2022 13:42

My advice is:
Keep the carpet for the winter definitely
Then have a wooden floor when you have saved up for it - don't use your savings for this.

CheltenhamLady · 15/09/2022 13:46

Op, if it is Ted Todd you are wanting then much of the range is not available as it is not currently in stock. I have been waiting for my order since May for their Sandbanks range. It is being shipped at such a slow pace from abroad that waiting months is the norm.

That aside, ignore all the nasty posts, if you want it and can afford it go for it. We only live once . Rehome your old carpet and move on.

Regardless of the current economic climate you do not have to justify your choice or expenditure to anyone on here.

WoopsIdiditagain1 · 15/09/2022 13:46

I'd wait till after winter. You'll appreciate the carpet in the cold months

Laiste · 15/09/2022 13:47

Sorry, meant to also say, only actually setting fire to money (and possibly gambling) is a waste of it. Money all goes around and comes around.

You paid what the carpet was worth (presumably) and paid for the labour to lay it. The money has been used. The carpet is going to be recycled.

When you think of the thousands and thousands footballers get paid, millionairs spend on their leather car seats and fancy paint jobs, food for exotic pets ect ect. couple of grand isn't much.

lovenaps · 15/09/2022 13:49

People are being nasty to OP.
Sometimes, when things are not going well in our personal lives, we get really fixated on 'fixing' something outside, and that something can become an issue in the house where we think once it is sorted/fixed/replaced we are going to feel a lot better.
Personal opinion, I would live with the carpet for longer. At least it is a nice new carpet OP, you could be in a situation where you have an old smelly carpet and have to keep it while saving money for the wooden flooring you want.
I would say do not stress too much about it, give it more time, wait till at least the end of winter. You will know by then.

jennakong · 15/09/2022 13:50

I realise this will sound a bit snarky and shitty, but it really annoys me that people like you, who think nothing of spending six grand on a wooden floor, will also get the energy discount being given by the govt, and will also benefit more from the price cap as you have a larger house to run, while other people will still struggle badly and go without the basics. Sorry - nothing to do with you, OP, but it does highlight the inefficiency of the govt's response to the energy crisis.

Why not give your £400 energy grant to a foodbank or something, you clearly feel a bit uneasy about your wealth as you are posting on social media about waste.

Musti · 15/09/2022 13:51

It isn’t w as refuel if someone else will make use of it. Go for it.

Get snarky at the billionaires and the fact the government is subsidising fossil fuel companies and not at ordinary folk. Ffs

Notjustabrunette · 15/09/2022 13:52

I would keep the carpet at least for this winter as will prevent heat loss through your floor.
is there another room in your house that could do with new carpet?
I kind of see where you are coming from. We have cheap flooring that came with the house that I would like to replace. It will cost approx 6k. But as it’s a wooden floor will never need replacing. Just want the kids to be a bit older as I don’t want roller skating on the new expensive floor.
I also want to replace the stair carpet as us quite dark, but I just can’t justify the cost as there’s nothing really wrong with the current one.

So have you had a holiday in the last 4 years and spent money on that? I have not.

So when was the airport experience you were starting a thread on 2 days ago?!

FourTeaFallOut · 15/09/2022 13:57

Having money is not a simple translation of being able to afford something - unless you are a child with no obligation to provide safety net for yourself and those dependant on you.

Lalalolol · 15/09/2022 13:57

Op, do what makes you happy.

Is there anything about carpets you don't like anymore? Are they difficult to clean?
I hated carpeted floor. But before you go for wooden flooring, do some research. They are hard to maintain as well. I would suggest a good quality laminate instead, easy to clean, also more affordable.

Ooooih interesting

GladAllOver · 15/09/2022 13:59

Why are you asking? If you want to do this you will, regardless of any advice here.

BlooberryBiskits · 15/09/2022 14:00

I agree with PPs that it’s worth waiting over the winter to see how you feel about carpet when it’s cold /let your views on floor settle

If you do decide to get rid, try to find someone who wants your carpet (for eco reasons): on the money side it’s for you to choose but I would find it hard to justify changing it so soon (and I ❤️ my house/it’s my no 1 financial priority)

iwantasandwich · 15/09/2022 14:03

@Doingprettywellthanks

You're aware people travel by plane for reasons outside of a holiday right?

justasking111 · 15/09/2022 14:03

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:25

No nothing wrong. I ask the question as I am not well off and the wooden floor would be a big chunk of my meagre saving. However as I have said, I dont go on holiday, nights out, new clothes etc.

If you're not well off. Hold off would be my advice. I think this winter is going to be a doozy energy bills and others. Our councils are already talking about a 10% hike as are the water companies

Robin233 · 15/09/2022 14:05

That thread does seem to contradict this one .....

BeggarsMeddle · 15/09/2022 14:07

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:30

No already got. I think I will put it on facebook for free.

You talk about wasting £2k but aren't looking at how you might mitigate that loss. I would be selling the carpet with the underlay to offset that. That would surely help extend your meagre savings.

Emotionalsupportviper · 15/09/2022 14:08

Can I have the carpet, please?
