To waste £2000!

Stangerthings · 15/09/2022 12:10

I had a new carpet fitted about 18 months ago which cost £2000 (big room). However, now I want a real wood floor which is going to cost £6000. Is it really bad of me to waste all that money and offer the carpet for free to anyone who wants it and replace it with the wooden floor?

OP posts:
bodie1890 · 15/09/2022 13:13

What's changed in the last 18 months that the carpet was ok then (and presumably chosen by you?) but now it's not?

It's up to you what you spend you money on... but I suppose in your position I would reflect on why I keep changing my mind... and if it's likely to happen again in another 18 months I'll want something else?

If it's a pattern then it would get quite wasteful... both for your pocket and for the environment.

Stravaig · 15/09/2022 13:14

It's a good question from IglesiasPiggl - are you generally quite fickle, OP? It's a lot of money if you're just going to change your mind yet again. Floor coverings are a carefully considered investment for most people. So why didn't you choose wooden floors 18 months ago? It's not as if they're a new-fangled innovation.

Yes, your wanton profligacy is obscene. But you know that.

Pegsmum · 15/09/2022 13:14

I say if you want a wood floor instead of the carpet then go for it. How about having the carpet made into a large rug? Most good carpet shops offer this service.

It would be hilarious if OP spent £6000 on wooden floor and then covered it up with a rug made from the existing carpet 😂

😁 One for the quote board.

Sometimes we regret our decisions and we should acknowledge that we made the wrong decision and fix it and move on if we are able to. It's silly to live with something you regret if actually you can sort it out.

But...are you sure about the wood floor? You say you can afford to spend £6000 and write £2000 off, but what if you then decide that the wood floor is the wrong decision?

I'd only spend that much to fix a mistake if I was absolutely convinced that it was the right decision.

Lochjeda · 15/09/2022 13:20

If the type of flooring you have down in your house is what brings you joy and you can afford it then go for it. Its not anything to do with anyone else.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 15/09/2022 13:21

Well, my view for what it’s worth is if you can afford it, and you want it, then go for it. It’s your home after all. But, as you changed your mind quite quickly last time, maybe don’t rush into it? Can the carpet be usefully repurposed somewhere else, maybe a bedroom?

crossstitchingnana · 15/09/2022 13:22

This thread is absolutely bonkers. I cannot get my head round spending £6000 on something I don't need. Christ the two floorings together would pay for my bathroom renovation. I have had to take a loan for that.

Some people are crackers.

alanabennett · 15/09/2022 13:23

We are actually debating ripping out the carpet in our bedroom and putting in harder floors too (I hate carpet; we moved in a year ago and inherited it.) We are going to wait until the spring to do it; no point losing the only benefit of the carpet (heat retention) when the weather's about to turn.

CoastalWave · 15/09/2022 13:23

SavingsThreads · 15/09/2022 12:24

Are you getting ripped off a lot? £2k for a carpet is mad, and most people can't afford £6k on new flooring on a whim, even if they do earn a lot

Of fuck off. £2k is NOT a lot for carpet IF it's a large room. A bog standard semi detached house with an average sized room will cost about £500 including underlay and fitting.

My parents have just spent £3k on carpet for their large room. It's not being ripped off at all.

OP - seems a bit madness but it's your money. If you're in the North West i would LOVE your carpet! (eyes up floor)

Why would you even bother to make a comment?

Op if you have the money, then of course you can.if your safe and this really isn’t going to eat in,or cause you financial harm then go for it. Your allowed to want things.
will you still have enough for the October price rises etc?just thing to consider.if yes then your clearly doing really well so enjoy your nice floor.
and giving it to someone who needs it would be really nice.perhaps do some research into how this really could help someone out who can’t afford it ordinarily.even a local charity or shelter?dog trust etc. any local families you no struggling?

alos it might be a good investments as materials are only likely to increase in price and therefore waiting might mean you are priced out in the future. so now is the time to do it.if that money is sitting I. The bank your actually losing right now.

people are really struggling right now.thee is a lot of fear and anger. So I can see the side of those who might not feel great about it.

Twinsandsome · 15/09/2022 13:24

@Stangerthings I think it’s lovely that you are offering it to someone else for free especially given the size of it it could do a couple of kids rooms or a family who really need it this winter. So no I don’t think it’s wasteful x

NCFT0922 · 15/09/2022 13:25

If you can afford it, fine. If you would be going without something or getting into debt for it, no.

sintrawest · 15/09/2022 13:25

how long have you disliked the carpet since it’s been laid and how long have you wanted flooring?

Personally I would wait it out for the winter and see how I thought next year.

do you actually hate it or do you just prefer flooring?

At the end of the day it’s your money to spend how you like, but if you don’t have it to waste then I would really wait and think carefully.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/09/2022 13:27

Do you know what brings me joy? Knowing I can pay the mortgage when the base rate heads to 5%, keeping the thermostat at a comfortable temperature, being able to fix and replace the car if necessary, saving for my dc's uni days. Not spunking saving on not broken shit so I can look at my floor with smug contentment.

If you often change your mind relatively quickly (grands/18months) then maybe make yourself wait and see how you feel in 6 months or a year. Do you still want wooden floors? Do you still want the same wood? Do you still want to get rid of the carpet or would you like it somewhere else? Is 6k still a reasonable price for you? Are you happy with the rest of the room as is or will the decor change soon? Ask those sorts of questions regularly between now and the delayed purchase date. And, if it took you 4 years to save this money are you sure you won't need it in the next 4 years?

£6k for a real wood floor of a reasonable size sounds cheap to me - I was quoted £16k for one laid diagonally!!

NoSquirrels · 15/09/2022 13:30

I ask the question as I am not well off and the wooden floor would be a big chunk of my meagre saving. However as I have said, I dont go on holiday, nights out, new clothes etc.

If you’re not well off and it’s a large chunk of your savings, live with the carpet and save up separately for new wooden flooring in the future.

Cost of living is going up, a recession will bite and you don’t know what you’ll need those savings for.

Giggorata · 15/09/2022 13:31

Fair enough but do pease donate the carpet to a charity. There are so many people in need who would be delighted with a good quality carpet.

Mybestyear · 15/09/2022 13:31

OP it is your money and up to you how you spend it. however, I do think posting on here is a bad idea given the current cost of living crisis - there have been threads recently of people who literally don't have a pound to leave for the tooth fairy or to take a present to a birthday part DC are attending.

If you had any empathy at all, you wouldn't have asked for opinions like this - you must have known how it would go down! Your issue really is first world!!

NCFT0922 · 15/09/2022 13:31

@WhoAre it’s a good price for real wood! I’m assuming it’s not a large room.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/09/2022 13:33

I think it's fine to ask for opinions, fwiw. Some people have savings, some don't - pretending otherwise is ridiculous. Almost as mad as moving from the former to the latter over a floor.

Crazykatie · 15/09/2022 13:34

Those I know that have wooden floors have half the area covered with rugs, wasteful but it’s your money. Most of us waste money on cars and houses that are too big and luxurys we don’t need.
