AIBU?

To have a party this weekend even if the Queen dies

We have been planning the garden party for two months, 30+ people invited for this Saturday. Now with the news on TV about Queen's health we are unsure whether we should cancel it, and what to do if the sad news happens tomorrow or Saturday.
Would you find it appropriate to come to the big party in case of the Queen dies on the day?

YANBU - proceed with the event as planned.

AIBU - cancel the party, it will be inappropriate and awkward

OP posts:

Am I being unreasonable?

AIBU

Unless you are Prince Charles, I reckon you're fine to go ahead

😂

honestly, I think it depends what your friends are like. None of mine would be fussed but if you’ve got some mates who would be upset, spoil the mood or not want to attend, be mindful.

I don't think anyone will care that much to be honest. Unless you move in very different circles to me we're not all sitting at home weeping in our mourning clothes are we.

Comefromaway · 08/09/2022 15:35

Ds has planned a big cabaret for months this weekend raising funds for his theatre group before he goes off to music college.

no matter what it’s going ahead.

TeenDivided · 08/09/2022 15:36

I don't think these days most people would think it necessary to cancel things like that, things have moved on in 70 years.
However you could always do a toast if you thought it appropriate.

InsertPunHere · 08/09/2022 15:36

Unless the Queen's relatives are invited to your party I would go ahead

ParkheadParadise · 08/09/2022 15:36

YANBU
I'm going to my nieces hen party on Saturday night
I'm also turning off the TV
I've no interest in the Royal Family.

YABVU 😡

I joke. Of course, it's fine 🙂

WoodlandMummy · 08/09/2022 15:39

Unless the queen is your granny why on earth would you cancel?

lightisnotwhite · 08/09/2022 15:39

I would have it and “cheers” the Queen at some point.
I have in fact got a party and it was already cancelled once this year as her dad died. 🙁

MaryHoldTheCandleSteadyWhileIShaveTheChickensLeg · 08/09/2022 15:39

Well there'll be fuck all on TV so I'd be glad of the invitation.

CheesltDelicious · 08/09/2022 15:40

It's sad for her family. But for the rest of us life continues on, enjoy your party and as someone else posted you could have a toast to her.

WillPowerLite · 08/09/2022 15:41

Unless you are a relative or close friend, crack on with your life as usual.

Carrotzen · 08/09/2022 15:42

Do you know the Queen personally? Do you cancel parties everything someone dies?

If neither of the above apply then go ahead

Itwasntright · 08/09/2022 15:42

Why the hell would you cancel because a woman you don't know died?

LaMarschallin · 08/09/2022 15:44

We've got a family wedding on Saturday.
My first thought was "I hope this doesn't mess it up".
Probably ridiculous to even think it, but I do remember friends whose wedding day coincided with Diana's funeral were asked if they were going to cancel it.
They didn't but it seemed rude of people to even ask it.
Although I doubt there'll be the same sort of hysteria in this case.

GooglyEyeballs · 08/09/2022 15:44

I wouldn't cancel I would just raise a glass to the queen.

FourChimneys · 08/09/2022 15:45

Will any of the royal family change their plans for your funeral OP? I would base your decision on the answer.

JacquelineCarlyle · 08/09/2022 15:46

I wouldn't cancel but agree that if your friends are likely to be upset, then raising a glass to the Queen and celebrating her life and long reign would be nice (& then enjoy yourselves!!)

baffledcoconut · 08/09/2022 15:48

Bloody hell I thought you meant you’d organise a party if she died. Thought that was some strong sentiment.

youre fine to crack on. Life goes on.

What she said

NCHammer2022 · 08/09/2022 15:50

I will be very sad when the queen does die but I wouldn’t cancel a party and would attend one and toast to her there!

Mindymomo · 08/09/2022 15:52

We’ve had relatives die and have carried on with planned events, we’ve always told our children that’s what the person who died would have wanted.

Cas112 · 08/09/2022 15:53

YABU.. life carries on
