DH examines his family members

mercury101 · 08/08/2022 18:23

Is this strange? My DH is a doctor. I am too.

Whenever we go and visit his family, if one of them has a cough or cold they
ask him to bring his stethoscope and to examine them by listening to their chest.

My family have never asked this of me and I don't think ever would. Even if they did, I think I'd ask them to see their own GP anyway.

I find it weird him examining his sister and mother.

AIBU?

I don't think that's odd. I have a friend who was a GP and he would do informal consults, especially with our DC when we saw him and we had a concern. He could often tell us there was no issue or tell us if we needed to visit our own GP for antibiotics or whatever.

If they had a cough or cold as OP said then presumably he would listen to the kings for any sign of infection, just as the GP would.

The lungs Blush

MarshaMelrose · 08/08/2022 18:32

I don't find it odd. If I had a rash or something I was worried about or something, I'd ask my husband or sister or dad or nephew. If my sister was a doctor, I'd have a weekly session with her! Lol.

I also think this is odd. That aside, a stethoscope isn’t going to help figure out exactly what’s wrong with them.

cheveux · 08/08/2022 18:33

BIL is a doctor and he does this, quite normal I think!

MolliciousIntent · 08/08/2022 18:34

My mum is a GP and she gives me medical advice all the time, she frequently listens to DCs lungs for me (history of respiratory problems). I don't think there's anything weird about it.

dehloh · 08/08/2022 18:35

OP said if they have a cough or a cold they ask him to listen. Which is exactly what a GP would do.

GreenTeaMom · 08/08/2022 18:35

@ChampagneCharlieIsMyName what are you on about? If you have a cold, flu etc it can be the start of a chest infection so it’s standard procedure to have a listen in. Have you never been to a doctors before?

ShirleyPhallus · 08/08/2022 18:36

Listening to their chest = fine

Examining them for thrush = not fine

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 08/08/2022 18:36

If he’s got them up in stirrups doing a quick smear while the dinner cooks, then yes, it’s weird. If it’s just a listen to their chests when they’ve got a cough, I don’t think you
need to call Freud in just yet.

Batshittery · 08/08/2022 18:36

Bearing in mind that it's near on impossible to get an appointment with a GP, I don't think it's odd at all

Kanaloa · 08/08/2022 18:37

From your title I was expecting him to not be a doctor or to be examining people secretly when they were asleep.

If he was giving them gynae exams on the dinner table while you tried to eat your Sunday roast then maybe it would be weird but ‘I have a cough, could you listen?’ That’s fine.

HollowTalk · 08/08/2022 18:38

Why wouldn't the women in his family ask you to do this?

mercury101 · 08/08/2022 18:39

Ok thank you for the perspective. They're just such a strange family, I think I can't see whats actually weird and what's not anymore.

IncompleteSenten · 08/08/2022 18:39

It'd be a bit weird if he was doing his mum and sister's smear tests on the dining table but listening to their breathing? 🤷.

Quornflakegirl · 08/08/2022 18:39

BIL is a paediatric consultant and gives medical advice to all parents in our family. I think it’s totally normal.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/08/2022 18:39

I hope he's not prescribing anything for them. The GMC would be seriously unimpressed.

Horcruxe · 08/08/2022 18:40

Dont you have a group of doctors/ friends who you could ask, I dont understand why you're asking a load of non- medical people this.

edwinbear · 08/08/2022 18:40

Agree with @Batshittery presumably he knows there is zero chance of them getting a GP appointment so he’d rather check himself.

They must tell you something or doctors wouldn't be using them! Or are they just part of the uniform, like an alternative tie?

Pottedpalm · 08/08/2022 18:45

Are doctors not allowed to treat their own children?

Tellmewhyaintnothinbutaheartbreak · 08/08/2022 18:48

@nocoolnamesleft jumping to conclusions a bit there

sounds normal to me OP.

my dad was an accountant and people were never done asking for tax advice. My mum was a primary teacher and again was asked to tutor on multiple occasions.

It’s just useful to know someone in certain professions
