I ordered 2 make up bits from eBay.
They arrived and the next day a bottle of perfume came from the same seller (worth £100)
A week has passed and the seller has been messaging me asking me if I'm going to send the perfume back.
Then saying I can see you have it as it's been signed for (I didn't sign for it)
I paid by debit card
Can she do anything ?
Would you return it?

@rryyg

What if she won't pay the postage costs of me sending it back ?
Then you don’t send it. Send her a message saying you are rather offended by her message and she is incorrect, you did not sign for it. However, you are happy to return the item as soon as she’s sent a prepaid returns label. I doubt she will refuse and if she does then you have been the reasonable one
RandomQuest · 01/03/2022 17:42

I’d send it back only if I didn’t have to print anything, pay for anything or go anywhere to drop it off. Not because I wanted to keep it, I only use one perfume, so if it wasn’t that it would be going in the bin but because I would refuse to be inconvenienced because she’s an idiot.

CambsAlways · 01/03/2022 17:59

You are stealing if you don’t send it back! It’s not yours to keep get her to pay postage

dottydodah · 01/03/2022 18:13

I cant understand why you think its acceptable to keep someones perfume worth £100! This is theft ,the same as it would be if you took it out of her purse! Please do the right thing and return it!

Frauhubert · 01/03/2022 18:25

To all the inconvenienced busy ladies out there who wouldn’t post it back I hope that next time you make a mistake and rely on kindness of a stranger, someone like OP intercepts your parcel ✌🏾

Why be unnecessarily arsey?

A million times this 👍🏻

She has no choice; it was her misttake so if she (rightly) wants it back she pays

Being ebay though, it's probably fake anyway ...

I hope next time a seller that makes a mistake has the decency to at least offer to pay for return postage ✌

As long as you're willing to pay for someone else's mistake hunny bun.
waitingpatientlyforspring · 01/03/2022 19:41

@rryyg

I was planning on returning it It's just her attitude stank and she didn't even give me a chance to respond before she got nasty
In your OP you say a WEEK has passed and she is asking if you are going to return it so it does seem like she has given you time.

Return it and don't be a dick about it. Mistakes happen and small businesses can't afford a mistake of this size.

LadyinRead · 01/03/2022 19:47

I would tell her she is welcome to send a courier to collect it on a date and time that is convenient for you.

@Frauhubert - this woman is an eBay business seller. If she can’t send out parcels to the correct buyers she shouldn’t be in business. Everyone is busy. I haven’t got time to go to the post office for someone else’s mistake.

Oh I'd post it back. Just not with my money or time going into town for the post office. Also ours doesn't open Saturdays and I work weekdays early till late so practically couldn't do it.
Gonnagetgoing · 01/03/2022 20:59

@Russell19 - agreed I’d post it back too but not with my money and I don’t go to the post office in the week anyway so not going for someone else’s mistake when they can send a courier to collect it or post office. I’ve got to parcel this up too so the seller could be less rude and more thankful.

lonelyapple · 01/03/2022 21:46

Get her to organise a return collection/pickup. It's not your fault she sent it to you and you shouldn't have to pay return postage or go out of your way to send it back.

No, the equivalent would be you posting your wallet through OPs door.

OP should return the perfume, once the seller arranges postage. But this is not theft.

Walkingalot · 01/03/2022 22:11

It's not theft. I think I too would have kept quiet, hoping nothing happens. Now the OP is being inconvenienced and made to feel bad about the Ebay seller's own mistake! She has to totally rely on OP's goodwill and should bend over backwards to ease the situation - which means posting her the return packaging and pay the cost of postage, which in these circumstances, should be signed for. OP still has to go to the PO though. Or maybe Ebay seller can arrange a courier?

MrsDThomas · 01/03/2022 22:15

Im astounded that someone would spend £100 on perfume.

Especially on Ebay. If i wanted to spend that amount id go to a shop to ensure i got the real thing.

Batshitkerazy · 01/03/2022 22:52

A lot of classic mumsnet hysteria on this post

MaudieandMe · 02/03/2022 08:37

Don’t be ridiculous, it’s obviously not theft.

No, I wouldn’t return it unless the seller sends a pre-paid envelope.

I’m not going to risk being out of pocket because of someone else’s mistake, honest or otherwise!!!

Alternatively, the eBay seller is a scammy bastard who does this sort of thing regularly, hoping the OP will buy the goods?

That's a big ass reach. She's been asking for the item back for a week. It was just a mistake
