To refer to her vulva or vagina would you know what it means? Even if you didn't in the moment, would it click later?

YABU - no idea what she'd be on about.

YANBU - i would know/it's an easy connection to make.

When I was little, our family used the word "wee wee" for vulva, not sure why. Crotch is a far better word!

PurpleDaisies · 03/02/2022 23:15

I know where my stomach is thank you @MiddleClassProblem.

I don’t dislike the words “tummy” and “belly” because they’re anatomically wrong. They’re just hideously twee.

Wanderingowl · 03/02/2022 23:16

@PurpleDaisies

And what would you have kids call it?

Stomach seems to work fine.

Your stomach is under your left ribcage so that would be completely inaccurate. The tummy area is where your intestines and a female's reproductive organs are. (Along with you appendix, colon, duodenum, cecum, gallbladder, jejenum, illeum and lots more.)

Right but then why replace with anatomically wrong. It’s like saying I don’t like it when my kid says “armbow” instead of elbow but shoulder is fine.

Just odd. You could say gut or something instead? Not twee but maybe a but blunt sounding.

PugInTheHouse · 03/02/2022 23:18

I worked in a pre school for years, not once did I hear a child use the word vulva. Most people would be familiar with the slang terms. If someone said someone had touched their flower/wee wee/mini/foofoo I don't know anyone who wouldn't make this connection. On MN people have an obsession with using the correct terms but in RL many many slang terms are used and I don't recall ever hearing a story where abuse had been covered up because of using slang terms.

Obviously it makes sense to use the correct terms as it's easier I guess but I just don't believe people haven't heard of all the slang terms. It's all about context.

The tummy area is anatomically defined? This is news to me.

I would teach “abdomen” for the “tummy” area. I’ve mainly come across tummy as a synonym for stomach,

@PurpleDaisies if they said their wee wee hurt I’d presume it burns when they wee. Normally when I ask if they want to go to the toilet I say do you want to go for a wee wee?
I suffer from chronic utis myself so probably would be my first concern !

JugglingJanuary · 03/02/2022 23:20

Anyone with a whole brain cell would know from context.

People pretend not to, just to try to shame you, but I bet they use other words such as eye, nose, elbow...

I wouldn't use 'wee wee' because I say 'do you need a wee wee' etc, but used in context I'd know immediately what she meant.

Chouetted · 03/02/2022 23:21

This actually confused me as a child - I remember my mother asking me if I had a stomach ache, and I said no - because I knew where my stomach was, and that didn't hurt - it was much lower down, where my guts were.
Mellowyellow222 · 03/02/2022 23:21

Wee wee means pee where I live.

Pee pee is sometimes used for penis by toddlers. I have never heard wee wee used for vulva.

I would think pee

MiddleClassProblem · 03/02/2022 23:22

@PurpleDaisies you just said you use stomach for tummy/belly and now your claiming your use abdomen? Sure, sure.

Not even worth this one when we can all just pretend we didn’t say what we did and then attempt to make it something else.

DappledThings · 03/02/2022 23:22

Calling it her vulva is batshit. Why the F would a little girl call it her vulva?! PMSL!!!
What a weird attitude. DD(4) has been calling hers her vulva as long as she has been naming body parts. We just taught her vulva same as head, nose, knees, elbows and everything else. Why on earth not?

cherryonthecakes · 03/02/2022 23:22

Do you use the words belly button or tummy button ?

PurpleDaisies · 03/02/2022 23:23

Luckily I don’t have kids to confuse. Smile

cherryonthecakes · 03/02/2022 23:24

I don't know what the female version of the word willy would be but I think "bits" might be closest? I've heard boys use "bits" too

PurpleDaisies · 03/02/2022 23:24

I would rather stick pins in my eyes than use the words “tummy button”. We’re into room 101 language here.
bellsbuss · 03/02/2022 23:26

I live in a very middle class area and I can honestly say I don't know one person who has taught their child to say vulva. I never knew it was a thing until I came on Mumsnet.

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 03/02/2022 23:27

I wouldn’t initially think it was genitalia she was talking about. I’d think she needed a wee or that it hurt when she did a wee.

DD has called it her vagina or vulva interchangeably (yes, I know I know, they are not the same thing!) since she’s been talking, it’s just what we say.

MiddleClassProblem · 03/02/2022 23:27

@PurpleDaisies yeah, lucky I didn’t assume you had any

ABitOfAShitShow · 03/02/2022 23:30

No. I wouldn’t assume that’s what she meant. Bladder/urethra would be the instant link.

Lou98 · 03/02/2022 23:31

@ldontWanna

Daft question.. are UTI's that common in children that some many posters would jump straight to this?

Yeah, unfortunately they are.

My sister used to suffer really badly with UTI's from a young age and I know a few other people who have been the same

DappledThings · 03/02/2022 23:31

As per most PP I would assume wee wee meant wee, obviously. And therefore if a girl said her wee wee was hurting then I would think she had a UTI. I wouldn't think she was talking about her genitals without further context.

No, we are into the language of children. If we are to adequately safeguard them we need to learn it, instead of waiting for them to use the "correct" terms.

That was supposed to be a light hearted reply. Confused
