Neighbours dog weeing on fence

Hi all! Who is BU, me or my husband!

We moved into our new home in October.

Brick wall on right and end of the garden, shared wooden fence with concrete posts with neighbours.

The garden was newly turfed but I noticed a dead patch next to the fence. The developers came round for another issue, I mentioned the dead grass, and he showed me a stain on the fence where he said there's an animal weeing - it must be next door's dog.

I didn't like the turf right up against the fence anyway, so the developers dug in a small border for us.

I sent a picture to next door, who are a really lovely young couple in their 20s, and asked could they try to keep the dog from weeing on the fence, I said we'd had a border put in as he'd killed the grass, but that it wasn't a massive issue. They were really apologetic and said they'd try to stop him'

The dog is still peeing there, worse than ever. I won't be able to plant anything along that border!

My hubby is getting really cross about it, I don't want to fall out with my neighbours as it's a new estate and community so important! Hubby is telling me to go and speak to them or he will, and he won't be as nice about it as I am 🥺

How do I deal with this

It seems a lot of hysteria over something that’s not really an issue. Seemingly you have removed half the lawn to ‘solve a problem’ that’s still not solvedHmm. There’s literally a hundred solutions before becoming hysterical over it.

Why not do a little landscaped area with gravel there with a bush in a pot, although I suspect most bushes would do fine with dog wee anyway so the pots really not required but just in case you can’t stand the thought of dog wee on the roots or something. Or one of many other things that would work. No way I would be going over to see the neighbours and I can’t believe their initial response. I would have thought you guys mad and suggested medication.

So much hysteria Grin Who does your husband think he is? I'd laugh at him if he came to my door.

Do you have to use the word 'shit?!'

Do you have to micromanage the words that other people choose to use on a forum for adults? @MNWorldisCrazy

Do you not find the word "shit" a bit repulsive to be used repeatedly & casually in a paragraph? Swearing I can cope with and do it myself but not repeatedly. I despise this growing trend of using shit as a normal word. Would you allow your young child to say it?

are you for real?! Grin No, in the same way I wouldn’t allow my young child to say ‘fuck’ or ‘asshole’: because those are words that only grown ups can use. You’re barking up the wrong tree trying to police posters on MN using the word shit Hmm

The dog is weeing in your neighbour's own garden.

You really can't go round there and start trying to dictate where their dog can wee, on their own property. You'll make a right tit of yourself if you do.

I wouldn't do it. Put a planter there with something nice in it. Tell DH that going round there to complain about anything of the sort would just be twattery and you won't support it

@PaddingtonsSister

I am so glad i am not your neighbour op

In my sleep deprived state I thought this read 'I am so glad I am not your neighbours dog' and thought 'Right?! Poor thing can't even piss in his own garden!'.

But seriously OP, no you can't police where your neighbours dog wees in their own garden. I'd be annoyed at my husband too for putting me in the position of either having to say something myself or worrying that he was going to and 'not be nice about it' because yes it would make him look like a tit but I'd be wary of you too by association if I were your neighbours.

Get a plant, lots of plants can handle a bit of dog wee fgs, especially what I imagine is a small quantity considering its not even on your side of the fence!

Anyone would think they were sending their dog round to yours to pee in your garden.

My first thought on reading your post was to wonder if your H is always so aggressive.

Seems like the job is sorting this out nicely has fallen on you otherwise your H is going to kick off and it's up to you to sort it out before he causes a rift. Looks like this may be the case?

Unfortunately AIBU is a shitty place with people who love to dive onto people and gleefully make you feel shit over and over again. Maybe posting in relationships about the way your H behaves might help gain some clarity around everything?

Good luck OP Flowers

YANBU but all the dog lovers will flame you.

It’s just unacceptable, antisocial behaviour. Your choice of animal shouldn’t inconvenience anyone else, and in this case, that mutt is a problem for you. They should sort it out.

YABU
FFS. The dog isn’t accessing the neighbours house to wee, he’s weeing in his own garden! Hmm
Either get hardy shrubs (no dog wee won’t kill them) or put your own fence up.
Wait until the neighbours get a cat that poo in your garden- now that’s real inconvenience!

Just read the drama over my use of the word shit haha. I never thought of shit being the worst swear word in the world 🙈😂. I do use it a lot, especially when talking about actual shit.

OP, I hope you're okay! If your husband wants to complain, I'd leave him to it. Flowers

Awful that bet it stinks can you not put something down like strong smelling viniger or a household cleaning product that smells really strong and Will put the dog off would drive me mad this

Or tell the neighbours you have seen a rat and will be putting rat poison down , they won't let the dog anywhere near then

Right. You're advocating making their own garden unusable because a bit of grass has gone yellow? Even though there are probably several reasons why the grass is not thriving?

Somewhat of a 'sledgehammer to crush a walnut' approach. And highly unethical.

It doesn't sound pleasant and you've been pretty accommodating by removing some of your lawn. Instead going round there and causing a potential neighbourly dispute, could you block up the gap in the fence where the dog pees to stop it running into your garden? I'd also look at just using potted plants in that area too to save them getting spoilt. Going over there may cause all sorts of problems, but if you do say something again, just be calm and nice about it (maybe keep your husband back from them!). I can't remember if you said you'd messaged your neighbours or spoke face to face, but I'd say a face to face conversation is much better with these sorts of things.

@BMW6

I thought it was only bitches' wee that killed grass, not dogs? My dog pees on my allotment grass all the time and it has never turned yellow. My sister has a bitch and her grass has yellow patches from her wee.

There is no way a bitches wee can run under the fence onto your grass if she is weeing on grass her side of the fence? Is it concrete on their side? (therefore could be running under fence onto your grass)?

I thought this too. We have a dog and his favourite pee spots in the garden actually lead to the grass growing. If only he could pee across the whole garden equally we'd have the best lawn in the estate.

@moochingtothepub

I don't understand why grass would be dying? My ddog has wee'd against the same post daily for 7 years and it is not stained and the grass grows if anything faster than the rest of the lawn! Never had a patch in my garden. It's really hard to get dogs to stop if there's a favourite spot plus other dogs might being going their which encourages further scent marking. Scrubbing and disinfecting the fence might cover the scent to stop the cycle of scent marking over the previous dog

I was thinking the same, my dog used to go in one spot in the garden when he was a puppy and didn’t go out, that area grew like a mini tropical rainforest.

The thread made me look it up (slow Sunday morning 😀) and indeed dog pee will help with growth as it seeps to surrounding areas and the nitrogen that is excreted will act as a fertiliser. The immediate area however, can be scorched by too much pee in one place and can result in dead patches. It is a myth that bitches urine and dogs urine interacts differently, a previous poster mentioned that a bitch tends to pee in one spot whereas a dog will spread it around, that would explain why bitches may appear to cause more damage.

Anyhow the upshot is that it is not at all likely that’s a dog peeing on one side of a fence would result in half the garden needing to be dug up on the other side.

A woman was mauled to death yesterday by neighbours' dogs.
You could have worse problems than your neighbours dog having a pee in his own garden.

Report
CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/04/2021 08:59

Dog pee is more likely to kill grass that other plants. To relieve the stress on your plants you can keep them watered, you can even add some bicarbonate of soda to the water to help - that will get rid of any smell too!

You could also ask your neighbours to spray their side with the usual puppy training spray so the dog doesn't focus on that spot. And tell them about the bicarb!

It's not a huge problem, unless you let it become one!

Could the dogs urine be bottled and sold for chemical warfare if its so toxic 🤔
Move your husband to the middle of nowhere. He sounds like an awful neighbour/husband
