Neighbours dog weeing on fence

Hi all! Who is BU, me or my husband!

We moved into our new home in October.

Brick wall on right and end of the garden, shared wooden fence with concrete posts with neighbours.

The garden was newly turfed but I noticed a dead patch next to the fence. The developers came round for another issue, I mentioned the dead grass, and he showed me a stain on the fence where he said there's an animal weeing - it must be next door's dog.

I didn't like the turf right up against the fence anyway, so the developers dug in a small border for us.

I sent a picture to next door, who are a really lovely young couple in their 20s, and asked could they try to keep the dog from weeing on the fence, I said we'd had a border put in as he'd killed the grass, but that it wasn't a massive issue. They were really apologetic and said they'd try to stop him'

The dog is still peeing there, worse than ever. I won't be able to plant anything along that border!

My hubby is getting really cross about it, I don't want to fall out with my neighbours as it's a new estate and community so important! Hubby is telling me to go and speak to them or he will, and he won't be as nice about it as I am 🥺

How do I deal with this

Dogs pee on things such as fences. Not sure what you expect your neighbours to do about it really. I couldn’t get worked up about this to be honest...

I think it is always best to try and keep on good terms with neighbours. Do you have a photo of the damage?

Don't let this be the reason your neighbours hate you. Find some hardy plants that can cope with dog pee, plant them, forget about it.

If your neighbours are friendly and see an issue here, you could ask them to plant a small bush on their side there (or put something else there)- the dog will aim for that rather than the fence and it's shouldn't intrude on your side. I agree somewhat that dogs will be dogs but see it's unpleasant from your side!

You kind of have to accept that animals will wee in public areas. What will you do if next door's dog stops but it turns out to be a fox or something?

I assume you mean on their side of the fence as you haven’t mentioned them coming into your garden ... so you want to tell the neighbours whereabouts in their own garden the dog is allowed to pee. I have never been able to pick the exact spot my dog pees, but if it is in my garden it is nobody else’s business. I would think you and your husband are both crackers.

My dog pees directly on lots of my bushes and it doesn't hurt then, or I suspect most plants. In fact I suspect most of the daffodils round here must thrive on dog pee because they get peed on by so many dogs daily! It does damage grass but have not seen plants much affected.

dogs wee against things in the garden,I wouldn't say anything to your neighbours about this, it is not worth it. plant a bush or something there if it bothers you.

One of dogs wees on the fence that is shared with next door neighbours. I've managed to reduce it by putting a plant weed pot next to where he likes to go and that has helped. My neighbours are lovely though and their cat shits in my garden all the time (I'm not fussed as I have to pick up dog shit anyway). They've also put a box flower bed on their side.

I think you're going to have to leave this one OP, you can't really tell them where their dog can wee in their own garden, just find something suitable to plant on your side!

It’s just unacceptable, antisocial behaviour. Your choice of animal shouldn’t inconvenience anyone else, and in this case, that mutt is a problem for you. They should sort it out.

It’s a bit of wee on a fence. Now they have a border it’s not even causing any damage. OP and her husband just think it will kill something they plant. They don’t even know if that’s the case. Personally I suspect it wouldn’t kill a plant, but it does damage grass.

the turf would go yellow, but borders will be fine

keep well watered to dilute.

can't dogs do anything these days without people complaining?? what about cats in your garden....birds?? rats?

You do realise all the rats, mice, cats, foxes etc will be peeing all her your garden?

I'm really not sure there is much you can do especially as it's their own garden.
