Neighbours dog weeing on fence

Hi all! Who is BU, me or my husband!

We moved into our new home in October.

Brick wall on right and end of the garden, shared wooden fence with concrete posts with neighbours.

The garden was newly turfed but I noticed a dead patch next to the fence. The developers came round for another issue, I mentioned the dead grass, and he showed me a stain on the fence where he said there's an animal weeing - it must be next door's dog.

I didn't like the turf right up against the fence anyway, so the developers dug in a small border for us.

I sent a picture to next door, who are a really lovely young couple in their 20s, and asked could they try to keep the dog from weeing on the fence, I said we'd had a border put in as he'd killed the grass, but that it wasn't a massive issue. They were really apologetic and said they'd try to stop him'

The dog is still peeing there, worse than ever. I won't be able to plant anything along that border!

My hubby is getting really cross about it, I don't want to fall out with my neighbours as it's a new estate and community so important! Hubby is telling me to go and speak to them or he will, and he won't be as nice about it as I am 🥺

How do I deal with this

Are you seriously complaining about next door's dog weeing in next door's garden?!

At least your neighbours are apologetic. We have serious problems with a neighbour's two cats who use our garden as a toilet, and the owners think their little darlings can do no wrong.

The dog wee is seeping through from your neighbours garden into yours..?
In high enough volumes to kill the grass..?

Either your fence must be really poor and happy or the dog must be absolutely huge?!

How wide is the border?
I would put plants at the front of the border then gravel behind that then the fence behind that.
So you’d only see nice border flowers as they would be in front and hiding the gravel and most, if not all of the dog we will go on the gravel.

What are you actually expecting them to do?

You can train dogs to go to the toilet only in a specific area of a garden, but with an adult dog you’re looking at months worth of training.

That’s an awful lot of effort to go to when it’s not even hugely likely to cause an issue for plants other than grass.

The fence rests on a concrete block, so when the dog wees, it goes under the fence too. It already killed a patch of our lawn, which we had removed to save an argument.

I have borders all round my garden and two dogs who pride themselves on weeing on all the plants, it hasn’t killed any of them Hmm

Your husband sounds like hard work and if my neighbour tried to police where my dogs urinate in MY garden I would laugh in his face.

If this is the only problem you have with your neighbours and their dog is otherwise quiet and well-behaved count your blessings and learn to live with it.

There is a small gap at the bottom of the fence, which is clearly stained, and wet. This is where the patch of our lawn was killed. The neighbours said he's killed the lawn on that side too 😒

Fill that space with gravel and stand pots on it.

It's one of those things that's much easier to work around than tackle head on.

Can you not put some log roll borders or willow screening along your side of the fence to block the wee?

Well surely if you have. apr9blem and your husband is going to deal with it then the answer is...let him.?

Or is the question really "how can I get them to stop this without actually saying anything?" There isn't a magic bush the will stop the dog weeing there.

Who owns the fence?

Tell Billy Big Bollocks to do his own dirty work.

It sounds like he’s scared of telling the neighbours that their own dog can’t pee in their own garden, so he’s sending you to do it.

@binkyblinky I'm a dog lover and dog owner and I would try to stop my dog weeing on a fence, especially if that causes nuisance to the neighbour. They can use vinegar spray, pepper spray, you can use the same (google will be your friend). It's not just the grass. In time the wooden fence will stain and start disintegrating and generally it will be an issue.

But I seem to be in a minority :-D

Search for 'plants resistant to dog urine' OP.
I agree there is nothing you can do annoyingly.

I think I’d rather have a small patch of dead grass than fall out with my neighbours.

You have spoken to them and they’ve said they will try and stop it but it’s not possible to stop it all the time so they could be trying but if you fall out with them then you’ve got no chance.

Surely if your husband has the problem then he should go and have a word?
It definitely sounds like he’s getting you to do his dirty work.

If you water regularly, you can plant just about anything there.

If you’re very worried, make your own little soak away. Dig a little hole (really needs to be little on your side if the fence, put in some small rocks and gravel, then top soil. Plant your plants in your border in front of your soak away.

Honestly OP, and in the nicest possible way, this isn't something I would want to make a big deal of. Unless they supervise the dog every time it goes out to wee, it is almost impossible to control.

My little dog loves a certain spot on plants in our building's front garden. I don't know why but I suspect it has to do with territory marking and/or the scent of wild animals like coyotes and raccoons which are plentiful around here. I have to almost drag him past the spot to stop him. He is quite determined.

It sounds like a good solution to have removed the grass around the post and planting a shrub would help. I have not noticed any damage to the plants despite our dog managing the odd wee there.

Cats both poo and wee in people's garden and it seems we are more tolerant.
