Getting too thin?

mmner31 · 11/03/2021 10:47

Hello Mumsnetters,

12 months ago I started losing weight through IF (16:8) and reducing portion sizes of meals. I also started walking more, which in turn lead me into starting jogging. I'm 5ft7 and I started at 13st9 and I'm now 10st 2. DP has expressed his concern that I am starting to look too thin.

I have explained that I still fast (for the health benefits) but do eat considerably more than I did when trying to lose weight. To be honest I do not wish to lose anymore weight as I am a healthy weight for my height.

Has anyone actually got too thin and then had a comment made by a DP/DH or even a close friend/family member/?

No but I’ve lost weight and reached a healthy BMI, and had lots of similar comments from friends/colleagues. I really wasn’t “too thin” at all, but did look completely different after losing 5 stone. Now I’m sadly fat again, with a BMI in the high 30’s. Funnily enough, nobody seems to be bothered now!

herewegoagainst · 11/03/2021 10:55

Yes, at a similar weight and height to you actually. DH was a lot more concerned than he let on at the time which he told me once I put about a stone back on.
With the extra stone I looked about 10 years younger!

MN vipers will be here soon to tell you that 10st at 5'7 is obese and anything more than 8st is unreasonable.

DenisetheMenace · 11/03/2021 10:57

Yes I became too thin (had been ill and after surgery became a bit obsessive).
I’ve gained weight the past year. Still a healthy weight but feeling a bit uncomfortable now. I’ll probably lose a bit, but not as much as before.

MyDcAreMarvel · 11/03/2021 10:59

10.2 is not thin even at 5.7 what an odd thing to say.

suspiria777 · 11/03/2021 11:00

sorry, to be clear: are you actually asking if anyone has ever got too thin after a weight loss diet and had a friend or relative comment on it?

mmner31 · 11/03/2021 11:02

@suspiria777 yes :)

Your height and weight sounds perfect - totally healthy & I’m guessing about bang on for BMI (22ish?) so you’re not too thin, it’s just what people say when they’re fatter than you & feel threatened by the fact you’re healthier than them! Ignore him and well done 👏

Boulshired · 11/03/2021 11:03

For awhile after losing weight you can appear too thin for you, as in people are used to a different appearance. It depends on is it concern or as a way to put you down.

KarensChoppyBob · 11/03/2021 11:05

Doesn't sound too thin to me. Depends how you carry your weight. I think we only know ourselves when we're at our right weight.

I'm 5ft 5 & 3/4 :) and am happiest around 9 stone.

That won't go down well with certain MNers. but it's 'my truth' as Meghan would say.

fellrunner85 · 11/03/2021 11:06

Yeah, I was told I was too thin when I first lost a lot of weight. I went from 11st 7ish to just under 9st, at 5ft 6. I'm not too thin; people were just used to me being fat!

ZaraW · 11/03/2021 11:06

Your weight sounds fine. Certainly not underweight. I have a friend who was obese for most of her life she went down from a size 20 to 12. Everyone would tell her she looked great apart from her sister who was also obese would tell her she looked ill. We are getting fatter as a nation being overweight is normal.

WhoAreYah · 11/03/2021 11:06

Yes. I’m 5’4 and was 9st 4 so definitely not too thin at all. But I think because we are fatter as a society, people look at those on the slimmer side and think they look abnormally thin.

I have been 8st and did look thin then, but was still a healthy weight for my height.

If you’re happy and healthy OP then don’t worry about it.

PandoraP · 11/03/2021 11:07

I don’t think you sound too thin, but you probably look different. People have a distorted idea of what too thin looks like these days.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 11/03/2021 11:07

@MyDcAreMarvel

10.2 is not thin even at 5.7 what an odd thing to say.
What a thinly veiled nasty thing to say. This weight gives the OP a BMI of around 22 so on the lower side.
MarySanderson · 11/03/2021 11:07

I kind of know what he means. When people are losing weight, myself included, you can see it in your face. Once you put a few pounds back on, the look seems to go. If I ever get anywhere near the weight I want to be, I intend to go a bit below and then put some on again to lose 'the look'.

woollysheeps · 11/03/2021 11:07

What part or parts of your body look to thin according to your partner?
Hardly to thin when to thin would be a few stone less I would a few stone less?

YesItsAPeacock · 11/03/2021 11:07

That's a fantastic weight loss, well done you.

He's just not used to how you look, he'll come round. When I lose weight sometimes I'm alarmed by how I look in the mirror - sort of drawn and angular - but it's only because I'm (sadly) more used to my overweight face.

Poached · 11/03/2021 11:09

I can almost guarantee that you won’t look “too thin” at that weight. Your dp will just be getting used to the change. You do you.

MyDcAreMarvel · 11/03/2021 11:09

I didn’t say 10.2 was fat , I said it wasn’t thin because it’s not. It’s an average weight for that height and size 12 clothing.

Chickenriceandpeas · 11/03/2021 11:10

BMI of 22 shouldn’t be ‘on the lower side’ - it should be the norm. This is the problem! 22 is right in the middle of healthy.

eurochick · 11/03/2021 11:10

I'd say it's just the change / he's not used to seeing you like that. Your weight is right in the middle of healthy bmi so certainly not too thin. I'm a similar height and think I look best with a bmi around 21. I'm certainly not skinny at that point.

mynameiscalypso · 11/03/2021 11:11

I'm a similar weight and height. My cleaner told me yesterday that I was too thin. I'm really not!

Gin4thewin4 · 11/03/2021 11:12

Don't they say scales do not matter anyway though?

Muscle weighs more than fat etc etc.
So without seeing what you actually look like there's no way of knowing if you look too skinny.
All the previous comments stating that weight and height is a healthy combo because of bmi are wrong.
There are women, really lean, muscly, with hardly any fat, size 8, but there bmi will be higher - muscle weighs more than fat. Thats does not mean they are obese or overweight.... even though a bmi reading would tell you so.

Scales are stupid. Don't use them. If you think you look too slim, fine, if you don't, fine.

mmner31 · 11/03/2021 11:13

I have checked my BMI as I use my fitness pal. So I knew it was a healthy weight.

OP posts:
MyDcAreMarvel · 11/03/2021 11:13

You could weigh 8.6 and still be a healthy weight but thin. That’s why I said 10.2 wasn’t thin because it’s not it’s average.
Not to be mean just stating a fact.
