Getting too thin?

mmner31 · 11/03/2021 10:47

Hello Mumsnetters,

12 months ago I started losing weight through IF (16:8) and reducing portion sizes of meals. I also started walking more, which in turn lead me into starting jogging. I'm 5ft7 and I started at 13st9 and I'm now 10st 2. DP has expressed his concern that I am starting to look too thin.

I have explained that I still fast (for the health benefits) but do eat considerably more than I did when trying to lose weight. To be honest I do not wish to lose anymore weight as I am a healthy weight for my height.

Has anyone actually got too thin and then had a comment made by a DP/DH or even a close friend/family member/?

OP posts:

Except that it’s exactly what the op is asking in the first post @Gwenhwyfar. Hmm

Macncheeseballs · 12/03/2021 19:56

I thought IF was about consuming less, surely that's how it works

Well, no because she knows very well that she's NOT too thin because she gives her height and weight and her BMI is slap bang in the middle. Her real question is obviously about her DH's reaction.

No, it's about consuming in a certain time slot, not about consuming less.
PurpleDaisies · 12/03/2021 19:59

Here it is @Gwenhwyfar since you’ve obviously missed it

There’s no need to be snotty with posters who are answering the question the op explicitly asked.

Have you read the thread Purple? Seems you haven't. OP has made it perfectly clear she's nowhere near being too thin.
PurpleDaisies · 12/03/2021 20:08

Yes I have read the thread. I have read the posts where the op has interacted with posters sharing their experiences of being told they are too thin.

Again, she was asking for people who actually were too thin to answer.

I'm really skinny naturally. I'm 5'6" and at the moment I weigh 8 stone 4.
I got up to 9 stone a year or two ago and I hated it because ALL the weight went on my tummy and waist. I do look old and a bit gaunt but I could put three stone on and it wouldn't change my face.
When I lost the stone in weight my DP kept saying I'd lost too much but in reality, he was just annoyed that he was classed as obese and I'd worked hard to shed my unhealthy tummy fat.
If you're happy with your weight loss then good for you!! Enjoy feeling healthy and happy 😊

It is. It wouldn't work otherwise.

That's NOT how it's supposed to work.

In theory part of why IF works is because of the hormonal changes brought about by the longer fasting period, most specifically with regard to insulin. And this may be a factor for some people. But in reality the absolute biggest factor in the vast majority of people IF works for is that it cuts out mindless snacking and lowers calories in. (The same as all diets or new healthy eating habits.) I commented on a query by someone it wasn't working for and if it's not working, it's almost certainly not working because calories in are exceeding or matching calories out.

CICO isn't the only factor with weightgain/loss. Hormones, most specifically thyroid, insulin and estradiol, and certain medications can play a part. But CICO is almost always the main factor. And I say this as someone who lost weight and now maintains weight by relearning my hunger cues and never tracking calories. I ate too much and moved too little. I lost weight by eating less. I maintain now by moving a lot and being mindful of my body's needs rather than wants.

Gwenhwyfar · 13/03/2021 11:44

"And this may be a factor for some people. But in reality the absolute biggest factor in the vast majority of people IF works for is that it cuts out mindless snacking and lowers calories in."

I remember discussing it on here and some people saying that eating only between 12 and 8 would mean no after-dinner snacks for them. However, I never snack after dinner anyway (except when I'm drinking mainly on weekends) so for me it would just mean no tea late in the evening. So yes, maybe for some people it's cutting out snacks. However, not everyone snacks. For me, the change was eating my breakfast calories at lunch and dinner. If I was a snacker I could easily move my snacks to within the eating timeslot. It's changing when you eat, not how much.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/03/2021 11:56

Honeatly, it is about how much in the end. If I eat 3000 cals I can interminnent fast as much as I want to, I will still be fat as fuck.

bungobango · 13/03/2021 12:00

The problem with big weight loads is that you can see it from face. It's usually aging.

I think that's a bit of a myth. I looked really kind of nondescriptly, middle-aged when I was really overweight. The shape of my face was gone and I was beginning to look jowly and had a double chin at a lot of angles. If anything I look way, way more girlish without all the excess fat on my face and that's even with having a naturally boney face. And seriously, the face is full of muscles you can build rounder cheeks really easily if you want.
stopgap · 13/03/2021 14:10

It depends on your build. I’m 5’7 and 9 stone. I was 8.5 stone for years. But I truly am a very narrow build.

I can imagine you look slim at 10 stone if you’re a pear. I’m an apple, so all my weight goes to my face, boobs, and waist.

DaisyDaisyDay · 15/03/2021 13:21

Bungo I know a few people who are overweight (one is clinically obese) who are terrified of losing weight because it will be ageing to the face, so they've never tried to lose weight because of that.

I understand their concerns, but not everyone who loses weight will lose it from their face in a way that is ageing, (sometimes it's the reverse as cheekbones, jawline and neckline become more defined which is associated with youth) and possibly the weight itself is ageing in the first place. It's a deeply personal choice though.

A double chin is not a youthful look.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/03/2021 14:02

A double chin is not a youthful look.

Or no neck😳

I moisturise, eat small dose of collagen and have collagen "rich" diet (also for bones etc) and massage face every evening. I lost a lot so far and if anything, I look younger! Or actually my age

KarensChoppyBob · 15/03/2021 15:03

God yes. Give me cheekbones over jowls any day (real ideally, not filler).

Gwenhwyfar · 15/03/2021 16:38

"A double chin is not a youthful look."

A double chin can happen as you get older, whatever your weight. I've got one now and I'm not fat.
I do know a 60 year old who's large and looks about 45. Yes, a double chin isn't youthful, but it can be middle aged and in her case she looks younger with a fuller face. (Not that it's worth it of course).

What collagen do you eat? I want to add collagen to my diet but wouldn't know where to start! Could you give me some advice please Smile
SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/03/2021 20:06

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake I make bone broth which is really rich in it (apparently, hadn't had mine tested but I melt all the joints from chicken and lamb bones and joints and sometimes when I score cheap oxtail and chicken bones crumble between fingers when I am done with them and it's very healthy in other ways too😁), eggs support natural production of it with amino acids, sardines (have still bones in them, so yay) and all fish I can is eaten with skin. Then you need vit c for the processing as well so things like bell pepper etc. Beans are good for amino.acids too.
And 1 tablet of h&b collagen a day. It says up to 5 but damn. No. I am early 30s so my natural production shouldn't be toooooo low anyway.
I have total of 80kg to lose (over half way now) and I would really like to give my skin chance to get to some normal levels without surgery. Blush

🤞Lol

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 15/03/2021 20:10

@SchrodingersImmigrant thank you! I tried making bone broth once but it went horribly wrong and I've been apprehensive to do it again!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 15/03/2021 20:34

My OH prefers a slightly more curvy figure with boobs etc. I’m 5-10 and need to lose some baby weight I’m aiming for about 11-11.5 stone. Your weight doesn’t sound too low but maybe ask him if it’s more round your figure / boobs / bum etc

I agree that the DH may be implying that the weight has fell off the 'sexy' curvy areas
