DD using tarot cards

316 replies

silverjackal · 18/02/2021 14:08

I've made it very clear to my DD that I don't approve of her getting involved in tarot readings, divination, etc. and I certainly don't want her bringing home tarot decks. She went ahead and bought three (!!) decks without my permission, using the money I gave her for emergencies.

This happened a couple of months ago, but she only told me she bought them last week. According to her they "help her" and she's using them to inform her A Level options of all things! (I genuinely don't know if she's joking.)

I told her she has to get rid of them and she reacted very angrily, but I honestly don't know what else she expects? She bought them without my permission, using her emergency money, and seems to have an unhealthy dependency on them.

If anyone has advice I'd appreciate it.

@SchrodingersImmigrant

Didn't we all have tarot cards at that age😁 If your issue is there are not as child friendly imagies as they could, then I kiiiiind of get it, but then again. She is 15? The images on taror cards are usually quite ok if you compare them to many other things. The hanged man is hanging by a foot on all I saw, I would understand you fully if he was hanged by his neck.
I didn't. I still don't. Would love some, the artwork is fab.
cravingthelook · 18/02/2021 15:32

She's not a child, she's a young adult. I think this is part of the problem.

Death is a fact of life btw, your daughter has heard of death and will experience people dying in her life.

However, I cannot stress this enough, you could benefit from educating yourself about the purpose and meaning of tarot cards. Very very simply (there is many more complex descriptions) Death means change, The Devil signifies the trappings of material world, the hanged man about seeing things from a different perspective.
You have a very immature and literal perspective on something your daughter is interested in and aren't even trying to understand.

She's right in the midst of understanding about life and herself and you are just giving her grief for trying to learn and understand the world.

MyLittleOrangutan · 18/02/2021 15:32

You're being weird and controlling. She shouldn't have used "emergency" money for a non emergency but does she get any kind of pocket money for things she wants or do you control everything she can buy because in that case I dont blame her for using the only money she has.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/02/2021 15:32

@user54328876

If I were you, I would seriously wonder what it was about my parenting that made me teenage child go looking for answers in a deck of tarot cards.

Bit of an overbearing narcissist maybe?

My paremts were good and I still had tarot cards at that age. I blame Charmed😁
OutingMyself · 18/02/2021 15:32

Do you allow her to read books or watch TV/films? Because there is far worse out there for her to see or here than a few (non-graphic) pictures.

ChronicallyCurious · 18/02/2021 15:32

Maybe you should research into them before you demand that she gets rid of them? Death card doesn’t mean someone is going to die.

thecatfromjapan · 18/02/2021 15:33

I'm actually quite curious about why she had to use 'emergency money' for a purchase.

Does she have no financial autonomy?

Honestly, she's going to leave home soon. She needs to practice having some financial freedoms/responsibilities.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/02/2021 15:33

I didn't. I still don't. Would love some, the artwork is fab.

We used to be so cool with them (flicks hair). Secret witches and all that. Lasted about a year🙈

SplendidSuns1000 · 18/02/2021 15:34

Would it be different if she purchased a bible, or a hijab?

OutingMyDog · 18/02/2021 15:34

I have some called The Tarot of the White Cats. The artwork is excellent Grin

Gobbeldegook · 18/02/2021 15:35

"it's rather the fact that a child is consulting cards which explicitly depict 'death', 'the devil' and 'the hanged man' to name a few"

As apposed to being taught that a bloke got thorns put on his head, nails hammered through hill hands and feet and hung up and left to die Confused

I know what I find more disturbing

KarensChoppyBob · 18/02/2021 15:35

I've got three . My favourite ones are discontinued now but they incorporate not only traditional tarot but western horoscopes as well as Chinese signs (I'm a snake 🐍). Randomly created by Russell Grant (!).

Terfy · 18/02/2021 15:35

Ask her to do a reading for you. That will be the best way to judge them.

WeatherwaxOn · 18/02/2021 15:36

@silverjackal

Thanks for the replies. Yes I'm a Christian, DH and DD aren't, but my issue isn't that at all (I completely accept that most of my family isn't religious), it's rather the fact that a child is consulting cards which explicitly depict 'death', 'the devil' and 'the hanged man' to name a few.
Well you clearly don't understand the meaning of the cards as you're making a huge fuss about nothing. The fact that she used emergency money is the problem.
OutingMyself · 18/02/2021 15:37

In a public library near me there is artwork on the wall of 'the crucifixion of humanity', which includes a baby being impaled on a sword.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 18/02/2021 15:37

I cannot believe that you purport to be Christian and have issues with the devil, hanged man and death. Especially considering that we are approaching Easter, where they crucified Jesus, who dies on the cross. Also doesn't the devil appear in the Gospels?

Maybe I am remembering this incorrectly, I was raised Catholic so maybe this is more Catholic than Christian.

Lots of teens turn to "the mystic" whether it is star signs and horoscopes or tarot. Wondering what your future will be is completely normal. I still have a set of tarot cards in my loft from my teen years. The spending of the emergency money is the biggest issue as clearly this is not an emergency.

OutingMyDog · 18/02/2021 15:38

My dream is to find a pack of Pokémon Tarot cards.

GoLightlyontheEarth · 18/02/2021 15:39

I think you need to try and see beyond your narrow understanding of what tarot cards are. Your daughter ought to have pocket money and you could benefit from being less narrow minded.

Mummyratbag · 18/02/2021 15:39

Ooh this made me want to do an online reading ...first was doom and gloom, so I did another which said I'm going to have a baby (I'm 50) - it passed 5 minutes of half term in lockdown and helped me procrastinate rather than do anything useful ...off to look for some biscuits now..

it's rather the fact that a child is consulting cards which explicitly depict 'death', 'the devil' and 'the hanged man' to name a few.

I went to RC schools, we had a model of a man being tortured to death on the wall of every classroom.

You can tell fortunes with normal playing cards, one of which is known as 'the death card'.

Nonamesavail · 18/02/2021 15:41

Nothing wrong with cards. As for the alevel thing its not so weird and just a way of getting to know your inner feelings.

user54328876 · 18/02/2021 15:41

@SchrodingersImmigrant

Yes, but did they try to make you throw them away because they thought the cards were demonic in some way.

I also suspect the influence of certain TV shows for popularising tarot and the occult in general actually. It's a subject I have been interested in, although not terribly convinced by, for decades.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/02/2021 15:41

Crucifixion is actually a fascinating killingBlush
They either nailed people or tied them to the cross. The outstretched arms meant the muscles got tired and you couldn't breat eventually, organs failed and blod cloths happend. Romans apparently used to finish them off by breaking the legs so they couldn't hold themselves up (just now hanging by arms) so the suffocation was faster.
...
Tarot cards are fiiiiiiine.

I do see them on Etsy from time to time, but they're never a full set or printed on proper cards etc
