DD using tarot cards

silverjackal · 18/02/2021 14:08

I've made it very clear to my DD that I don't approve of her getting involved in tarot readings, divination, etc. and I certainly don't want her bringing home tarot decks. She went ahead and bought three (!!) decks without my permission, using the money I gave her for emergencies.

This happened a couple of months ago, but she only told me she bought them last week. According to her they "help her" and she's using them to inform her A Level options of all things! (I genuinely don't know if she's joking.)

I told her she has to get rid of them and she reacted very angrily, but I honestly don't know what else she expects? She bought them without my permission, using her emergency money, and seems to have an unhealthy dependency on them.

If anyone has advice I'd appreciate it.

"She is hardly using a ouuji board!"

... Also a piece of mass produced paper that has no mystical abilities whatsoever.

Devil, as i said - is a warning against being controlled by a person or being over interested in material things.

Death rarely means physical death. It's nearly always about the change of one phase in life to another. The death of an era.

Hanged man is usually about patience waiting for change. Something not finished. Something taking longer than usual.

If any of this helps OP?

@silverjackal

Thanks for the replies. Yes I'm a Christian, DH and DD aren't, but my issue isn't that at all (I completely accept that most of my family isn't religious), it's rather the fact that a child is consulting cards which explicitly depict 'death', 'the devil' and 'the hanged man' to name a few.
Banning cards isn’t going to make death no longer part of life.

I don't get it. So do death, the devil and the hanged man not exist in Christianity?

The real issue is that you are effectively destroying your relationship with her.

Really.

I suspect if the Archbishop of Canterbury found his children playing with tarot cards, he'd talk with them, ask questions, create a space where he learns what they are thinking, and shares his views with them, while offering guidance.

It's about communication.

The fact you've gone nuclear about this just suggests your parenting is a whirlwind of chaos and bad feeling.

Honestly, you're posting on MN, so I'm going to offer advice: build communication with your child; don't destroy communication.

Especially at this age.

You need to be able to communicate with her.

iklboo · 18/02/2021 15:24

So you don't actually know the meaning of the cards then? You just don't like the pictures. AFAIR the bible has lots of death and hanged / killed people in it.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 18/02/2021 15:25

As other have said if you think

Death
The Hanged Man
or
The Devil

in the Tarot are portents of evil, then you need to educate yourself.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/02/2021 15:25

Didn't we all have tarot cards at that age😁
If your issue is there are not as child friendly imagies as they could, then I kiiiiind of get it, but then again. She is 15? The images on taror cards are usually quite ok if you compare them to many other things.
The hanged man is hanging by a foot on all I saw, I would understand you fully if he was hanged by his neck.

What is your problem with those images? I don't understand.
KarensChoppyBob · 18/02/2021 15:26

Yep Yahweh isn't exactly nice.

Laiste · 18/02/2021 15:26

So you could have the devil, death and the hanged man come up in a reading and it could mean your posh car is costing you too much, it would do you good to have a rethink and sell it, but it might take a while to find the right replacement GrinGrin

If you are concerned about tarot it might come as a surprise that it comes from Christian roots. It is a bit old now but this book is a really interesting read https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/BeyondPrediction.html?id=tNIATpKHDkkC&source=kpp_bookdescription&redirr_esc=y

I use the Jesus Deck which is a set of playing cards with the life of Jesus in groovy 1970s technicolour at mind, body and spirit fairs. When it is quiet I can play solitaire. They are fabulous for making connections. A more recent self directed card based prayer is Orisons which was created by a vicar from Kent. I like them a lot. www.eye-books.com/books/orisons

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 18/02/2021 15:27

Does the Bible not tell stories about babies being murdered and all sorts of other horrific stuff? Why is that any better?

It’s some pictures, just that. That is all you are talking about here.
Wedlock · 18/02/2021 15:28

Bet you don't approve of mood rings either, OP. Used to love consulting my little mood ring leaflet. 'Ooooh let's see what sludgy brown signifies'.

VettiyaIruken · 18/02/2021 15:28

Don't worry about it. They're bollocks.

Shufflebudge · 18/02/2021 15:29

You should google the meaning behind those cards. They’re symbolical, not literal. Kind of like the bible

This made me laugh. Because nailing someone to a cross is totally cool....

It's the fortune telling fish you really need to worry about.
combatbarbie · 18/02/2021 15:30

Maybe if you educated yourself on the meanings or asked DD you wouldn't have made a fool of yourself on here with a stereotypical judgemental opinion.

Shufflebudge · 18/02/2021 15:30

I remember my friend doing tarot cards when we were about 16 - we always asked about boys and she also told us they secretly like us. Usually they didn’t!

user54328876 · 18/02/2021 15:30

If I were you, I would seriously wonder what it was about my parenting that made me teenage child go looking for answers in a deck of tarot cards.

Bit of an overbearing narcissist maybe?

Firstly, i don't expect you to read up on tarot but these are unlikely to mean what you think

Secondly, she will be exposed to the whole world already at her age. Would you be angry if she read her star sign?

Thirdly, emergency money is for emergencies and you really need to address that with her.
