DD using tarot cards

I've made it very clear to my DD that I don't approve of her getting involved in tarot readings, divination, etc. and I certainly don't want her bringing home tarot decks. She went ahead and bought three (!!) decks without my permission, using the money I gave her for emergencies.

This happened a couple of months ago, but she only told me she bought them last week. According to her they "help her" and she's using them to inform her A Level options of all things! (I genuinely don't know if she's joking.)

I told her she has to get rid of them and she reacted very angrily, but I honestly don't know what else she expects? She bought them without my permission, using her emergency money, and seems to have an unhealthy dependency on them.

If anyone has advice I'd appreciate it.

I have attended Tarot classes, the people I met were amoung the most gentle, compassionate, caring thoughtfull people I have ever met, very interested and caring about the environment and what impact they were making and how to improve it, most all of them volunteered for things like soup kitchens etc - yes, I would say that most of them were wiccans and had an Altar in their homes and were very 'woo', but I would chose their company over some sanctimous bible basher everytime.

Leave your dd alone to make her choices and give her some credit for being an intelligent young woman.

If she doesn't have her own money its inevitable she will spend the only funds she does have access too. She shouldn't have to go cap in hand begging you for everything she wants knowing full well she'll only get it if you approve.

It's also inevitable kids will spend money on stuff you dont approve of. It's called growing up and learning your own boundaries.

Its part of being a parent to facilitate this.

And the bible hardly stants up to close moral examination.
Details of infanticide, mass genocide, how to beat slaves, how to punish women.*

*The Koran even more so. Thankfully most of us don’t follow it all to the letter.Shock

A wise friend once said to me that if I wanted to make a decision then toss a coin (bear with me here)..not to decide the outcome, but to focus my thinking. If after seeing the outcome I wanted to toss the coin again then I knew what I really wanted the decision to be (and it wasn't the answer the coin toss had given). I think Tarot cards can work in the same way ..you interpret what you want to, you see what you want to.

Thankfully most of us don’t follow it all to the letter.

Good that you have better moral judgement than religion tries to give you.

I'm as baffled by how she managed to purchase them without you knowing as I am by your response to it.

Tarot decks aren't exactly Tesco essentials, so presumably they had to have been ordered online. Would you not have noticed parcels coming or the transactions on the card?

You object to their use but have gone to the effort of digging up cards you find offensive and finding out what the deck is called...

It kind of sounds like you were just hoping to whip up some anti new-age sentiment.

rawalpindithelabrador · 19/02/2021 13:39

I've found my deck. Off to search in the Spirituality board for some advice. I could use a bit of clarity in some areas of my life.

OnGoldenPond · 19/02/2021 17:03

Tarot cards are not like ouija boards, they are not about conjuring spirits, whether or not you believe that they work.

They are completely harmless and are just the same as horoscopes.

DD is really into them and has got a lot of enjoyment from learning all the meanings. She has managed to avoid becoming a bride of the devil.

I understand the annoyance about spending designated emergency cash on them just as I would be annoyed if DD had spent her rent money on new clothes, but certainly nothing wrong with spending her own free cash on stuff she enjoys.

TidyOmlette · 19/02/2021 17:08

What’s the issue with the cards? If it’s relaxing and making her happy then leave it alone. There’s worse things she could be doing at that age

I've seen them for sale in lots of stores. Why would you think I she must have bought them online?

Probably just because of the lockdown at the moment. I know loads of shops sell them, but they're all closed at the moment here so it'd have to be online if they were bought in the last few weeks.

You are being pathetic OP.

RapunzelHadExtensions · 19/02/2021 19:22

@Mummyratbag my DH makes me do that, it really works!

CandyLeBonBon · 19/02/2021 23:48

I've got 4 tarot decks. Still trying to work out which of the upcoming euromillions will be mine. Personally I think the Thoth deck is the mist likely to 'fess up. I'll keep you posted in case your dd wants some tips
