Such brilliant news this morning!

The UK is banning the life export of animals to and from the UK, additionally they are now planning to ban fur ENTIRELY, given how cruel the industry is, I am so delighted!
Whale meat transportation to Japan from Nordic countries will also now be banned.

The phasing out of petrol etc cars is also happening much sooner than planned, so hopefully this will help keep the pollution levels low.

Of all the things to come out of brexit, this is unexpected wonderful surprise for many, and it has really made my day! I hope the gov carry on with changes like this, it is most definitely the right direction for our country.

PS Harrods will need to rethink their winter collection :)

StillMedusa · 07/12/2020 07:22

Excellent!!!!

Porcupineinwaiting · 07/12/2020 07:24

How exciting. No let's ban hunting with dogs. Properly.

Meredithgrey1 · 07/12/2020 07:27

Whale meat transportation to Japan from Nordic countries will also now be banned.

Sorry, stupid question. What does this mean when you say UK bans whale meat? Whale meat won’t be able to come through the UK on its way to Japan?

Nc135 · 07/12/2020 07:30

Ah ok was getting super depressed by brexit but this is one ray of hope. Also the vaccine. Am a staunch remainer but I am now hoping there is some good to come if this

Nc135 · 07/12/2020 07:33

Ps if I were the governments PR machine I would be now doing a few of these wins.

Bluebell798 · 07/12/2020 07:38

Ugh awful about them banning fur. Glad I don't live in the UK.
Whale meat is random though, didn't even know there was a trade in that.

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 07/12/2020 07:45

Shame they need to kill 500,000 sharks to make the Covid vacinne though...
Sad
In one hand and out of the other....

Reedwarbler · 07/12/2020 07:45

I don't understand your comment about whale meat. It has been illegal for ages to bring whale meat into the uk under CITES (and in fact the whole of the eu). Is it because we will no longer come under eu regulations, so the government had to revisit the regs?

Whyistheteacold · 07/12/2020 09:15

Wow, I had assumed it was alreadly illegal!! Better late than never I suppose 🙄

Whyistheteacold · 07/12/2020 09:17

@santaisironingwallpaper really? That's awful, where have you seen this?

Whyistheteacold · 07/12/2020 09:18

@santaisironingwrappingpaper 😂😂 sorry, please see pp

contrmary · 07/12/2020 09:18

Don't understand the whale meat part, that was already illegal in the UK. Or does it mean UK ships can't transport it?

Changi · 07/12/2020 09:22

Is it because we will no longer come under eu regulations, so the government had to revisit the regs?

We adopted all EU laws when we left. I suspect that what has changed is the blocking of the loophole in EU law that allowed whale meat in transit to pass through EU/UK ports on its way to Japan or wherever.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/12/2020 09:24

It should be mandatory to add article links...

Oh my god. It's a pro Brexit pr... The no furs is a pro Brexit Pr.... It's genious

Has anyone thought through the practicalities of this? Like how are the millions of households without access to off-street parking going to keep their car batteries charged?

My db did run an electric car for years. But then he had a large garage under his house and no difficulties in plugging in his battery.
We often have to park 3 or 4 streets away outside the house of some random stranger. How would we charge an electric car from there? You can charge at a service station but that takes time (at least 20-30 mins) which would cause massive pile-ups. Batteries of course lose charge when not being used so you'd have to make this journey regularly. Workplaces can only help if they have a car park- which lots of workplaces don't.

This government are very good at making promises without thinking through the details.

There's a whole thread, or three, on just that topic!

And we're glad not to have you thanks.

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 09:54

They aren't banning live exports of animals, so I'm not going to believe you have it right about the rest.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/12/2020 09:55

You know they won't do it. It's just a distraction from how badly the talks are going... And to make people cheer for brexit
