UK banning fur and whale meat!! :)

Such brilliant news this morning!

The UK is banning the life export of animals to and from the UK, additionally they are now planning to ban fur ENTIRELY, given how cruel the industry is, I am so delighted!
Whale meat transportation to Japan from Nordic countries will also now be banned.

The phasing out of petrol etc cars is also happening much sooner than planned, so hopefully this will help keep the pollution levels low.

Of all the things to come out of brexit, this is unexpected wonderful surprise for many, and it has really made my day! I hope the gov carry on with changes like this, it is most definitely the right direction for our country.

PS Harrods will need to rethink their winter collection :)

And they are not an endangered animal.

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 10:23

cory Actually I think you will find the electric car is mainly a consumer led demand. Shell and other big names are now investing in green energy now. With enough demand, the government only need to offer basic support.

Faux fur is so bad for the environment, absolutely ridiculous that it’s considered a viable alternative. If you don’t want fur, don’t use fake fur ffs.

Lockheart · 07/12/2020 10:25

When you say "faux fur" what you mean is "plastic". Which is far from green or ethical.

I have a faux fur coat myself, but let's not pretend it's greener than biodegradable actual fur.

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 10:25

Most people in the UK are not samis.

We do not need to kill or use reindeers for food or warmth. Indeed many samis have moved on from the practice some time ago.

There are in fact huge reindeer farms, that are not allowing free range reindeers to enjoy their life at all. They are bred and killed in the same way as everything else. Their quality of life is severely limited.

Why kill innocent animals if you can simply find the same comfort and pleasure from things that are handmade without killing animals. It is barbaric.

Of course they won't do it

They already have thankfully! And this is just the start apparently.

I don't expect you to be happy for the UK, I have seen your many negative posts before, you could at least consider the suffering of millions of innocent animals, and anything that puts an end to that is a very very good thing. At the very least you should acknowledge that, but I won't hold my breath.

I would be very happy if it was a control rather than complete ban. Ban fur from non certified places. Does this include for example fur from Hares? Or aforementioned raindeers? See, I am for use of all animal. Throwing something useful away is disrespectful to the source in my opinion.

Also, the article can't be read until registering.

It's also odd that you quoted "of course they won't do it" when I said it differently 👀

Bluebell798 would you like all of your hair ripped out?would you enjoy being in a cage 24/7?attitudes like yours are beyond vile.

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 10:26

If you are so attached to having fur, and I don't wear it of any kind - then the faux fur is clearly a much better choice, in terms of animal cruelty.

That's not a case for majority of fur
RaspberryCoulis · 07/12/2020 10:30

ethical faux reindeer furs instead.

Plastic, you mean?

I wouldn't wear a mink coat, probably. But when an animal is being killed for its meat - and something like a reindeer is a staple food in many parts of the world - disposing of skins in favour of a plastic "faux" alternative is nuts.

Prozacyogurt · 07/12/2020 10:33

It is a damn shame whale meat is being allowed to be sold anywhere in the world - but alas we have had to put up with this for years.

Never understood why people get so hung up on whale meat. Chomping down on cod, cow, pig or chicken is absolutely fine but God forbid someone fancies a little whale.

I'm also uneasy with the ban on fur as the synthetic substitutes are far more environmentally damaging than what it's replacing.

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 10:35

Nope, they have not.

thegcatsmother · 07/12/2020 10:38

I'm a consumer and will be driving a petrol car for as long as I possibly can. Those who think there'll be enough demand for it all to just happen are seriously deluded.

You know what. You just made me realise you are right. I always loved uk. I loved the multiculturalism, food from all over the world, that if you can do something you can bloody well make it in it, the politness and so on. I even like the bloody weather as I don't like hot. Then I found mumsnet which was fun at the beginning... Now it's full of incessant whining about everything and but olympics and it makes me really turn off from UK... So yeah. Might have to do something about it since I am normally actually a positive person. Maybe just block aibu, since isn't even aibu anymore. Maybe just leave it all. I don't know. Thanks!
WiddlinDiddlin · 07/12/2020 10:43

Does anyone have a link to the actual documentation of what will and won't be banned?

I assume leather won't be banned, as a by product of the meat industry and a huge UK industry in its own right still (though not as big as it once was)...

What is classed as fur and what is 'hair on hide', I have used rabbit, reindeer, sheep and cow hair on hide, are these fur or not? These are again, all by products of a meat industry, but some are wild animals and some are not.

LunaDeet · 07/12/2020 10:45

I have a feeling the Gov are just making noise about the live transports now, so that when there inevitably is one lorry full of lambs stuck in the Kent queues next year they can say it's not their fault.

YoungScrappyHungry · 07/12/2020 10:48

@SchrodingersImmigrant I love how you try and get across that you're actually not a negative person by being really bloody negative.

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 10:49

Does anyone have a link to the actual documentation of what will and won't be banned?

There isn't one. It's just a vague promise.

Lemononachair · 07/12/2020 10:52

@thegcatsmother, I live in a rural part of the country with a higher proportion of elderly people who, after a certain point, don't usually drive. There are many tiny villages that have no public transport links and those that we do have are infrequent and rubbish - and even those are being cut!

Having your own transport is basically essential as you can't really do anything or go anywhere if you don't unless you live in a big city and even then you are limited. You cannot rely on public transport for work or education because of the stupid timetables, young people have little freedom because they are reliant on parents driving them around. I personally live at least 3 miles from the nearest corner shop and at least 20 minutes drive from the nearest supermarket. If I didn't have my own transport I would be completely stuck.

The demand is already there but no one will put the money in, I can't imagine how the transition to electric will work. Well actually I can, it just won't work! Not without immense expense and effort.

Current petitions up and running to prevent shark based Covid vaccine.. But it is used in British flu vaccinations...

The squalene is sourced from sharks that are kiled for other purposes anyway, no sharks would be saved by banning the substance from vaccines.

Thanks for your concern friends, perhaps you've been doing it for ten years like me? Faux reindeer fur is shit and sells for a fraction of the price. This is closing a market of 70 million people to the sami. These reindeer have a bloody brilliant life then die at the right time with a quick knife in the spine and an instant blackout. Idiotic to ban that stuff. You want to go lecture the sami on morality? Couldnt give a fuck about those who sell things like mink/beaver, that really is evil

RaspberryCoulis · 07/12/2020 10:58

Still waiting to hear from someone who claims to be a "Friend of the Earth" why it's preferable to use plastic, sheddable fibres rather than a natural by-product, which would otherwise go in the bin?

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 07/12/2020 10:58

Still doesn't sit easy with me....
