UK banning fur and whale meat!! :)

Such brilliant news this morning!

The UK is banning the life export of animals to and from the UK, additionally they are now planning to ban fur ENTIRELY, given how cruel the industry is, I am so delighted!
Whale meat transportation to Japan from Nordic countries will also now be banned.

The phasing out of petrol etc cars is also happening much sooner than planned, so hopefully this will help keep the pollution levels low.

Of all the things to come out of brexit, this is unexpected wonderful surprise for many, and it has really made my day! I hope the gov carry on with changes like this, it is most definitely the right direction for our country.

PS Harrods will need to rethink their winter collection :)

friends i am a member of Greenpeace and Amnesty.

Your attempt at sarcasm is a big fail, the UK could have refused to sign a FTA with Japan but chose trade over ethics.... what a surprise.

Any ban on the passage of whale meat is gesture politics, just like the ban on the export of animals for slaughter..... how could the EU ban this trade? how would a farmer in ROI to the NI vice versa? a situation common throughout europe.

We need far better standards for transportation and the reduction in consumption of meat.

Lemononachair I live in a sleepy village in Cornwall. Many of the elderly here still do drive (alarmingly), and as you say, cars are a necessity, although we do have a bus service of sorts for the moment. I cannot see a roll out of charging points in a higgeldy-piggeldy village if they can't even get mains gas down here!! Nor can I see the elderly managing the chargers for their cars...I have to fill my Mum's up for her; she has problems with the petrol pump as her hands are weak sometimes. She has problems charging her iPad, let alone a car, and she doesn't have the money for an EV.

I'll be waiting for hydrogen fuel cell developments before I get shot of the petrol cars. Dh's car is 52 years old anyway, and should go for another 20 years with care and attention.

The link above should come with a warning. Graphic photo.

@Friendsoftheearth

It's not graphic. It's a picture of meat and no worse than what you'd see walking past the butcher's or down the meat aisle in the supermarket.
jasjas1973 · 07/12/2020 11:45

@Friendsoftheearth

The EU has not relaxed its anti whaling stance, Norway has relaxed restrictions.

What is Johnson doing to pressure Norway into not doing this? SFA is the answer.

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 11:46

jas for as long as you have been on here, you have slammed the UK for everything. Brexit particularly. So I do not expect you to say anything positive now or ever. It is great that you support such worthy causes, being a little more open minded would also be helpful to you.

There are positives and negatives to every change, and this for me personally is a huge thing. I live in a place where I regularly see live exports on the lanes and roads, and it makes my children cry every time. We are overjoyed. You can say what you want about it, I would expect nothing less than pure negativity and scorn from you, and you are not disappointing me.

Wow! 52 years old - that is quite something. Can we see a photo please!

And why the hell has the EU allowed Norway to 'relax' its restrictions exactly? How is that okay?

OP posts:
frolicmum · 07/12/2020 11:49

I do hope they will ban the mass production of animals for meat for consumption and put stronger regulation on that as well because that's just as cruel.

I'm not saying banning the meat industry but what it has become over the past 40 years.

Strong opinion over here but to me, animal cruelty is animal cruelty for whatever reason.

OneTC · 07/12/2020 11:51

You know Norway isn't in the EU don't you?

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 11:52

frolic Agreed

questionable You might not find it graphic, but cut up bits of whales for me is very graphic and upsetting, and whilst we are on a thread about animal welfare and animal cruelty, there are likely to be many other people that will see it, and find it disturbing as I do - hence the warning.
I don't go anywhere near a butchers, and haven't even walked past one in thirty years as the smell makes me feel sick, and I couldn't look at the animals hanging there anyway.

Well, considering how decent broadband still hasn't been rolled out sufficiently among rural areas in the country, I don't hold out much hope for charging stations for electric vehicles...

Is it possible to get an electric vehicle that copes with mud/ice/snow for months on end and won't cost a fucking bomb?

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 11:55

Norway are part of the EEA.

I wouldn't hold your breath.

We have one that is 65 years old. My husband has plans to convert it to electric if petrol becomes too hard to source.

CynsterBitch · 07/12/2020 11:57

If reindeer fur is banned I can only assume sheepskin is being banned too? Literally the same thing, a by-product of an animal raised for meat.
Whale meat has always been illegal here, sadly, only get to enjoy the delicious meat when I’m back in Norway.

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 11:57

I understand that many petrol stations - including Shell etc are planning to drastically expand their operations to service electric cars as well as petrol etc.

I have confidence in many alternatives to oil being the future, it is not a case of if but when.

@Friendsoftheearth

Norway are part of the EEA.
So not under the control of the EU then?

Despite you thinking otherwise.

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 11:58

Is it easy (ish) to convert petrol to electric then out of interest chang?

OP posts:
OneTC · 07/12/2020 11:58

Norway are part of the EEA.

Yes, hence the EUs limited powers

tectonicplates · 07/12/2020 11:59

@Friendsoftheearth You still haven't shown is any evidence that fur is going to be banned. Sources, please. I wouldn't wear or buy it anyway but I also don't appreciate fake news.

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 12:00

Common bodies such as the EEA Council and the EEA Joint Committee administer the EEA Agreement sabrina

jasjas1973 · 07/12/2020 12:00

Friends thanks for that but Norway isn't in the EU & the UK could have banned the whale meat thing years ago.

I have explained to you that the export ban doesn't apply to stock and breeding animals, so they will continue as per and how exactly do you know that the animals you see being carted away aren't going for domestic consumption?
As i said, we need to halt whaling and reduce meat consumption, neither will change under these new consultations.

Once you post genuine positives of Brexit, i will support these but if all you do is spout PR from tory central office, then expect to be called out.

OneTC · 07/12/2020 12:01

Is it easy (ish) to convert petrol to electric

No it's a total rebuild

SabrinaThwaite · 07/12/2020 12:05

In which case you’ll know that the EEA agreements don’t cover fisheries policies.

Right?
