Such brilliant news this morning!

The UK is banning the life export of animals to and from the UK, additionally they are now planning to ban fur ENTIRELY, given how cruel the industry is, I am so delighted!
Whale meat transportation to Japan from Nordic countries will also now be banned.

The phasing out of petrol etc cars is also happening much sooner than planned, so hopefully this will help keep the pollution levels low.

Of all the things to come out of brexit, this is unexpected wonderful surprise for many, and it has really made my day! I hope the gov carry on with changes like this, it is most definitely the right direction for our country.

PS Harrods will need to rethink their winter collection :)

I am not entirely sure why you are feeling so outraged that many millions of animals will no longer suffer, sounds slightly strange to me, and you now don't believe government ministers

Anyway folks - it is great news for most of us! We are having a few sherries to celebrate, I have waited many decades for this moment - I hope you have a great evening

You set a v low bar a: its a consultation and b: DEFRA say it's 6400 animals per year... not millions

But as for the suffering? i once took a lame cow to a local slaughterhouse, it was horrendous, the animal knew what was going to happen... these animals will still end up on a meat hook, spending their last minutes terrified.

I will celebrate when we all eat far less meat & whales are not killed in the first place... not because Useless spouts a load of PR guff.

@Friendsoftheearth
Last time I looked, the Times was a newspaper too
show me a link ending .gov.uk
and I might believe you are not a squirrel Grin

Friends
I hope you are watching ch4 news and the film about the Chinese flotilla of 250 boats (inc a tanker so they can refuel and processing boats) fishing of Peru/Galapagos destroying the very marine environment the whales you say you care about, are desperate for.

these fish are then sold around the world....

So i hope you are very happy with your Sherry, your battle is won!

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 19:48

What am I missing?

Chickens, mainly.

I am not entirely sure why you are feeling so outraged that many millions of animals will no longer suffer

What millions is that? You will still be exporting many millions of live animals for slaughter, same as you do now. What is it that you're so damn happy about?

Scrowy · 07/12/2020 20:16

i once took a lame cow to a local slaughterhouse, it was horrendous, the animal knew what was going to happen

The reason farmers send cows to slaughter houses is to make money.

Slaughter houses are incredibly strict and have vets on site, a lame cow would have not allowed to have been slaughtered for meat, it would have been euthanised on arrival and skipped. The person who sent it there it lame would have been charged not only for the transport costs to get it there but also for the costs of the vet euthanising it and the costs for disposing it.

They wouldn't make any money from doing it so they don't send lame cows to slaughter.

If you are transporting a cow and it's terrified and 'knows what is going to happen' then you are A) doing it wrong, none of my cows have ever been 'terrified' in the back of a trailer and B) have a cow that is somehow capable of experiencing human emotions.

jasjas1973 · 07/12/2020 20:30

@Scrowy It was in the mid 80s, back then the rules were different (animals shot on the farm went for disposal) but that cow "knew" it wouldn't get out of the trailer, they used electric prods through the slits and then it was forced up a ramp, cow tried jumping over the barriers and got a leg caught, they dragged it out and then it was shot.
As i said it was horrendous and yes animals can experience terror, that is not a unique human emotion, i never went there again or took an animal for slaughter.

I spoke about it to the herdsmen, a man with 40 years experience, he said they can "smell" death, there is a guy i know now who is what many would describe as a "countryman" (no he ain't a morris!) he also agrees that animals know (for want of a better word) which is why his shot venison is so much better than slaughtered meat.

Unlike the OP i fear animal welfare standards will slip back as we try and compete with meat imported from around the world and not subject to EU standards.

Great. But I honestly I'm baffle whale meat wasn't illegal already.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/12/2020 23:45

I thought they'd banned fur years ago, and. I didn't even know whale meat was a thingBlush

Has anyone thought through the practicalities of this? Like how are the millions of households without access to off-street parking going to keep their car batteries charged?

My db did run an electric car for years. But then he had a large garage under his house and no difficulties in plugging in his battery.
We often have to park 3 or 4 streets away outside the house of some random stranger. How would we charge an electric car from there? You can charge at a service station but that takes time (at least 20-30 mins) which would cause massive pile-ups. Batteries of course lose charge when not being used so you'd have to make this journey regularly. Workplaces can only help if they have a car park- which lots of workplaces don't.

This government are very good at making promises without thinking through the details.

Street chargers?

Already a lot in cities and you can get a grant to have one installed

Sinful8 · 08/12/2020 01:29

Can we keep leather though?

There are still thousands of Sami going into reindeer herding. Just because somebody who is 'half' that ethnicity doesnt fancy it you think we should encourage the death of a culture that lives with the environment rather than moving on to another culture which destroys it?

It reminds me of the fishing industry in Hull- the ranting that goes on because that life was lost for so many and yet we let it slip away at the time without a care. And the Sami culture and reindeer herding is going the same way-theres no lack of enthusiasm but government interference is killing it in places like Finland.

But im sure we'l still have mindfulness classes when theres nothing real left in the world.

The crappiest forms of capitalism will win out of this, as usual. And nobody is bothered that Johnson is clearly considering this to keep his latest shag happy? Dont know why im worried anyway seems its a complete load of old nonsense and isnt going to happen.

Just because I'm "half" doesn't mean I'm not still connected to the culture. I spent my childhood in a Sámi community. Now who's being racist? I grew up within this world. I am Sámi, and I'm aware that younger people are moving towards a different lifestyle and embracing the many other cultural traditions we have. We are not just reindeer herders. In fact, so many never work with reindeers. Please become more informed before telling someone who is deeply connected to Sámi culture their opinion isn't as valid just because they're "half". You've embarrassed yourself.

user1471565182 · 08/12/2020 05:48

It was you who said 'half'

Graciebobcat · 08/12/2020 05:56

Banning fur and whale meat doesn't exactly make a huge difference to the lifestyle of the average person in the UK.

We're more of a ready meals and polyester kind of place.

joanwinifred · 08/12/2020 07:59

@user1471565182

It was you who said 'half'

Yes, and it's you who believes you would have more understanding than someone who grew up within the culture, and tries to use the fact that I'm half to minimise my understanding. I'll take a wild guess that you're British.
