UK banning fur and whale meat!! :)

Such brilliant news this morning!

The UK is banning the life export of animals to and from the UK, additionally they are now planning to ban fur ENTIRELY, given how cruel the industry is, I am so delighted!
Whale meat transportation to Japan from Nordic countries will also now be banned.

The phasing out of petrol etc cars is also happening much sooner than planned, so hopefully this will help keep the pollution levels low.

Of all the things to come out of brexit, this is unexpected wonderful surprise for many, and it has really made my day! I hope the gov carry on with changes like this, it is most definitely the right direction for our country.

PS Harrods will need to rethink their winter collection :)

Hopefully it means those nasty arseholes at Canada goose will go out of business here .

tectonicplates · 07/12/2020 13:49

Also what's the situation with online shopping? Most clothing companies do international shipping, so what's to stop someone in the UK for buying a fur item online and getting it delivered?

frolicmum · 07/12/2020 14:23

@corythatwas i am not actually against fur, because in my opinion and that again is probably controversial for some but how can I be if I wear leather boots. I wear an animal's skin whether the fur is still on it or now.

I'm against mass production and the exploitation of animals, raising them in tiny cages in bad conditions, feeding them as much food as they can so they get fat as quick as possible etc. What you talk about I personally have no issue with. I don't disagree with the killing of the rabbits or animals in general if raised in the right way if needed and if there is too many anyway (I don't know anything on the topic of rabbits tbh).

ListeningQuietly · 07/12/2020 14:31

Funny that the OP has provided no Government source for their fantastic tales

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 14:35

Why on earth would anyone want to ban that and force the Sami to use man-made fibres?

I'm guessing because they are ethno-centric, rather stupid, and ignorant, all while thinking they are morally superior because they are so concerned about the ickle bambis.

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 14:37

I honestly cannot see the government successfully banning petrol/ diesel cars. Replacing a battery of a rechargeable car can cost over £20,000

Possibly it can, but it generally costs a fraction of that, and they can last 25 years, longer than most petrol cars.

Goosefoot · 07/12/2020 15:08

I don't know that I think the move to electric cars is a great solution, not the way it is being conceived. I would really like to see a reorganisation of housing in cities to reduce the need for cars, and changes in public transport in rural areas - it was actually much better in the past. And also a change in expectations that accounts for people needing to use it more often, and other lifestyle changes.

Electric vehicles may be part of an answer but only of those other things happen first. And they would be far far more effective at reducing energy use.

As for fun, I have a problem with significant chunks of the fur industry, as I do with the agricultural industry. I think the posturing against other parts like reindeer, or seal, is just that - posturing.

As for anyone saying that it is better to use any petroleum based product than real leather or fur, I can only assume they are clueless about the destruction that the oil industry entails for animal habitat and animal life. In parts of Canada, the oil industry cuts down more forest than the forestry industry does.

This has Carrie Symonds all over it. Good for her

No, not good.

It is extremely troubling that the Prime Minister now seems to be Carrie Symonds, whatever you think of her views.

SabrinaThwaite · 07/12/2020 15:14

The Guardian reported on Zac Goldsmith making various noises about fur in September this year.

amp.theguardian.com/politics/2020/sep/25/uk-considering-outright-ban-on-fur-sales-after-brexit

(Like the way Goldsmith is described as a close friend of Boris Johnson’s partner, Carrie Symonds Smile)

tectonicplates · 07/12/2020 15:23

Yes, he was considering it. That's not the same thing as that it's actually happened. The media writes a lot of articles about things that might happen, or things that people are considering, some of which don't end up happening. So unless it's actually been announced that it definitely will happen, then it's not true yet.

Baycob · 07/12/2020 15:27

What about horses? Lots of horses move country to country sales and competitions?

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 15:37

What about horses? Lots of horses move country to country sales and competitions?

Not an issue unless you are planning to kill them and eat them at the other end of the journey.

SabrinaThwaite · 07/12/2020 16:16

Although I’m not sure why people think it only affects a few thousand animals? In 2016 480,000 live sheep were exported from the UK to the EU, 99% of which were for fattening or slaughter.

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 16:21

Not according to DEFRA, who told the Guardian: "An estimated 6,400 animals were sent to Europe for slaughter in 2018, according to Defra. Many of those left through the port of Ramsgate in Kent".

And not according to the HoC either.

SabrinaThwaite · 07/12/2020 16:26

I was looking at the HoC briefing document dated September 2019.

commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8031/

Seems like a hell of a drop since 2016?

UK banning fur and whale meat!! :)
SabrinaThwaite · 07/12/2020 16:31

"An estimated 6,400 animals were sent to Europe for slaughter in 2018, according to Defra. Many of those left through the port of Ramsgate in Kent".

And yet the HoC report values 2018 exports at over £420 million for live exports to EU and non-EU countries for England and Wales alone?

What am I missing?

UK banning fur and whale meat!! :)
thegcatsmother · 07/12/2020 16:51

Friends Google MGCGT and you'll see one.

So legally, you need a big heavy 4 x 4 to tow even an empty trailer, although a decent sized saloon could probably tow one quite safely. Nope... we towed an aircraft back to UK from Belgium with an estate car, and when we get a towbar on the MGC, it will tow the aircraft. Given, the aircraft in question doesn't weight much, but it and the trailer can be towed by an estate car or the MGC. You need to know the towing limits for the car, but a 4 x 4 is not always needed.

The Telegraph is a newspaper
NOT a Government website
Useless Eustice has said many things that are kite flying
and contradicts himself regularly

Unless the source ends in .gov.uk
I do not believe you (or him)

HighNoon · 07/12/2020 18:34

Who eats whale meat in the UK anyway? A good way to be seen doing the right thing but immaterial to most of our lives surely?

ListeningQuietly · 07/12/2020 18:37

Whale meat has been banned in the UK for a very long time under CITES
www.theguardian.com/environment/2011/nov/02/whale-meat-iceland-british-tourists
Brexit is just a distraction story

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 18:37

Oh dear. Are you feeling okay listening? I am not entirely sure why you are feeling so outraged that many millions of animals will no longer suffer, sounds slightly strange to me, and you now don't believe government ministers - but you do you.

Anyway folks - it is great news for most of us! We are having a few sherries to celebrate, I have waited many decades for this moment - I hope you have a great evening Wine

OP posts:
Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 18:41

You do need to get your facts straight listening and for the record - the UK and other EU countries can not legally stop whale meat being transported through its ports to Japan, NOT to eat it here!!!! Please keep up.

@corythatwas

Friendsoftheearth could you explain what is so cruel about a reindeer's life?

They roam freely, they are not transported alive, they are killed (humanely) for their meat anyway- why should the local Sami not sell the fur as well?

Half Sámi, and most of the young generation aren't interested in working with fur anymore. So it won't bother us.

joanwinifred · 07/12/2020 18:46

@teateateateateamoretea

Thanks for your concern friends, perhaps you've been doing it for ten years like me? Faux reindeer fur is shit and sells for a fraction of the price. This is closing a market of 70 million people to the sami. These reindeer have a bloody brilliant life then die at the right time with a quick knife in the spine and an instant blackout. Idiotic to ban that stuff. You want to go lecture the sami on morality? Couldnt give a fuck about those who sell things like mink/beaver, that really is evil

Like I said, bit racist (of OP)

I'm half Sámi, and I don't believe the OP is being racist. Most young people in Sámi communities are leaving behind this part of our cultural heritage anyway.
