Such brilliant news this morning!

The UK is banning the life export of animals to and from the UK, additionally they are now planning to ban fur ENTIRELY, given how cruel the industry is, I am so delighted!
Whale meat transportation to Japan from Nordic countries will also now be banned.

The phasing out of petrol etc cars is also happening much sooner than planned, so hopefully this will help keep the pollution levels low.

Of all the things to come out of brexit, this is unexpected wonderful surprise for many, and it has really made my day! I hope the gov carry on with changes like this, it is most definitely the right direction for our country.

PS Harrods will need to rethink their winter collection :)

Excellent news.

No let's ban hunting with dogs. Properly.
Yes to this too.

SummerBaby2020 · 07/12/2020 10:03

Just wanted to point out squalene ( which is in the sharks liver and used in not only making the COVID 19 vaccine but others too ) is not actually used in the UK vaccine it’s being used in an American vaccine. 2500,00 MAY be culled if one dose is needed and double that if 2 doses needed and it’s not to say this is going to happen or has happened yet but like I said this is not being used in uk vaccine.

They aren't banning live exports of animals,

Live animal exports to be banned in England and Wales

Lemononachair · 07/12/2020 10:06

Just curious, is the banning of fur on all fur products including antique/vintage ones or is it just banning new fur from being sold?

Calmandmeasured1 · 07/12/2020 10:08

Has anyone thought through the practicalities of this? Like how are the millions of households without access to off-street parking going to keep their car batteries charged?
We managed to focus minds on developing a vaccine. We can focus out minds on this better with a reduced timescale. For a start we should try and reduce the number of cars on the roads anyway.

Something has to be done to minimise pollution. Covid-19 has shown us the benefits of reducing traffic pollution. It was wonderful to see the clear canals and fish in Venice shortly after the first lockdown started. We must be meant to learn something from this pandemic.

It’s so funny how it can be written in black and white and the doomongerers still pour shit on it

Nc135 · 07/12/2020 10:09

And I agree on the car thing. It is entirely possible to set an ambition with no clue how to get there yet. It focuses people into action. As the vaccine has done.

oh for fucks sake are they banning reindeer fur? whats the point of banning fur of stuff we eat? itl just go to waste

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 10:10

In answer to the whale meat, yes it comes through the UK from Nordic countries and then is sent on to Japan. It has been severely criticised for years.
It is a damn shame whale meat is being allowed to be sold anywhere in the world - but alas we have had to put up with this for years.

I don't know where you are in the world bluebell but there is precious little support here for buying or wearing animal fur, it has been seen as a disgusting practice for decades. Faux fur is amazing now, and that way an animal has not suffered a terrible life and death to provide clothes of any kind. We are in 2020 now, and I can't believe we are even still having this conversation. Civilised countries have mostly moved on from real fur.

I suspect that it will be a ban on the import of fur products.

user1471565182 · 07/12/2020 10:11

Thats half of my business down the pan.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/12/2020 10:11

Well, going electric is supposed to do that...

And @corythatwas there was an interesting discussion about it and when you looked at it you could clearly see which posters live in area with an amazing public transport... It will be a shit show, it won't happen in my lifetime properly anyway and I am early 30s🤷🏻

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/12/2020 10:12

Sorry. That was in response to post about having less cars to lower polution

I am with you on that.
user1471565182 · 07/12/2020 10:15

Im genuinely fucked if theyre banning reindeer fur. Its half my income.

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 10:15

SchrodingersImmigrant

Of course they won't do it

They already have thankfully! And this is just the start apparently.

I don't expect you to be happy for the UK, I have seen your many negative posts before, you could at least consider the suffering of millions of innocent animals, and anything that puts an end to that is a very very good thing. At the very least you should acknowledge that, but I won't hold my breath.

Another one wondering about reindeer fur. Can't for the life of me see how reindeer have either a shit life or a shit death.

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 10:17

Civilised countries have mostly moved on from real fur

Bit racist there.

Friendsoftheearth · 07/12/2020 10:19

user Perhaps you should update your business and source ethical faux reindeer furs instead. A good example of one can be seen here, and is currently sitting by my fire and you would never notice the difference.

If you are selling fur your business is doomed anyway in my view.

SlopesOff · 07/12/2020 10:20

I hope this also applies to the 'faux fur' trims on parka hoods, bobble hats and fur boots, and the little furry toys for children and pets that are actually dog fur from Chinese dogs. Always described as faux so that people will not realise they are wearing something that was once a living creature.

Banning it is one thing, actually checking it is something else.

corythatwas · 07/12/2020 10:20

I am generally very negative towards car use and think the motor car is used excessively in this country. But a change to less car use or more environmentally friendly car use would take a lot of hard work, thinking and investment. Before you start talking about banning something, you need to show you've done that thinking. What I've seen of how this government has handled the Brexit customs planning doesn't fill me with confidence.

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 10:21

The UK is banning the life export of animals to and from the UK

Yet again, someone has confused the UK with England and Wales.
It doesn't include Scotland.
It doesn't include Northern Ireland.
It doesn't include poultry
IT hasn't happened, its the start of an 8 week consultation and is not definite.

AND, hardly any live animals are exported from the UK anyway. Something like 6 thousand a year. Miniscule.

So this is just one more attempt at a distraction from the shitshow that is Brexit, and you're falling from it.

corythatwas · 07/12/2020 10:22

Friendsoftheearth could you explain what is so cruel about a reindeer's life?

They roam freely, they are not transported alive, they are killed (humanely) for their meat anyway- why should the local Sami not sell the fur as well?
