To want a washing machine that does a wash in under 3 bloody hours

DuckyMcDuck · 01/12/2020 21:20

Our 8 1/2 year old washing machine has died and so searching for new one.

Obviously haven't bought one for a while and can't believe all the basic 40 degree washes are around 180-200 minutes. Our old one was 80 minutes.

We always buy Bosch but it seems they're all the same. Am I missing something here?

@CurlyhairedAssassin

For god’s sake, people, don’t put your washing machine on overnight! Think of your neighbours if you live in anything but a detached house. Plus there is always the small but real possibility that it will catch fire while you’re all asleep in your beds.
The only time we had a fire was the washing machine
jimmyhill · 01/12/2020 22:30

If they run for longer they can run slower and use colder water.

A bit like driving: slower speed saves fuel but takes more time to reach your destination.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/12/2020 22:31

200 minutes sounds great to me. Currently I have to take the washing down to the river. Thrash the clothes on some stones and then, more often than not, I have to wait for a drying rock to become available.
After that I have to lug the whole lot back home. I reckon it takes about half a day in total.

WellTidy · 01/12/2020 22:31

My entry level Miele is now 10+ years old, so I don’t know if the current models are the same, but it does a quick wash in 20 minutes at 1400 RPM and you can choose. 40, 30, 20 degrees or cold. I use that cycle a lot and it washes well.

But my default setting for a full load at 40 degrees and 1400 spin takes 1 hour 40 minutes (it is quicker if the load isn’t a full one).

SecretOfChange · 01/12/2020 22:32

Agree with @unlikelytobe that quick washes don't really wash very well. I don't know what they are for, they don't really achieve anything. So maybe ok as a desperate attempt to have something ready by the next day for kids very very urgently but it is debatable whether those clothes are actually ahem clean.

You want to see the american washing machines my friend has one so fast I am very jealous. They do sell them here

Samsung 8kg machine here (the one with the flap that allows you to bung a forgotten sock/tea towel in once you've already pressed go). Daily 30/40/60 degree cycle is 51 mins, usually done in 47-48mins though. Longer cycles vary from 120-180mins but I only tend to use these once in a blue moon for really dirty stuff.

Houseinthemiddle · 01/12/2020 22:36

My Bosch is Varioperfect so has a speed perfect button which reduces a 40 deg wash from 2.45 to 1 hour. A 60 deg 2.45 to 1.06

Its module number WAQ243D1GB/01

This is my third Bosch, it gets a very hard life but its good machine.

Thanks, that's helpful. I thought I was saving energy by using the quick wash Blush

LunaLoveFood · 01/12/2020 22:38

We've got a Bosch washer dryer. A mixed 40 degree load is 1hr 5min . There is also a quick 1hr wash and dry load which can be reduced to a 15min wash with no dry which is really handy. 8kg drum

Al1langdownthecleghole · 01/12/2020 22:39

Quicker programmes heat the water faster and use more energy to do this.

Washing machines offer eco programmes to claim energy efficiency ratings, but most people prefer the shorter programmes and accept the minimally higher cost of running these.

Most machines offer quick programmes. Typically these are around 30 mins & around 45 mins for a 40 degree wash and a higher spin speed.

callmeadoctor · 01/12/2020 22:44

Can I just remind people NOT TO PUT WASHING MACHINE ON OVERNIGHT! Please think of safety, thank you x

Calmandmeasured1 · 01/12/2020 22:47

I have a new Bosch washing machine and a 40 degree cotton wash takes 2 hours 54 minutes and 60 degrees takes 2 hours 35 minutes. However, it has a speed/eco button which changes the time to 1 hour and 6 minutes and 4 hours 35 mins respectively. It is a Which?-recommended model and washes very well.

Pasithea · 01/12/2020 22:49

My hoover does a 14 min wash.

veeeeh · 01/12/2020 22:51

I'm all for eco stuff don't get me wrong, but there is no way I am staying at home (for fear of fire) for four hours for either dishwasher or WM. I have no kids at home now, and we are not dirty scruffy or muddy people lol!

Will be buying both machines with quick washes, which is what the current Ariston brand have (35 for wm and 45 for dw), and have lasted 26 years. Yep. That is true. Need to get kitchen done now and can only put it off until the New Year really.

Surely I will use less electricity and water on a shorter cycle, but I think a lot of the 4 hour cycles are clothes and dishes sitting soaking in cold water for hours or something.

I have this Candy machine

ao.com/product/gvs169dc3-candy-grando-vita-washing-machine-white-49127-1.aspx

Not a particularly big name but have had their appliances for years and all been good.

It does a daily wash with an option of 14/30/45 minutes as well as more involved options and has Bluetooth.

PronkWine · 01/12/2020 22:53

Miele

DildoAndAKneeAss · 01/12/2020 22:54

You should get a decent Bosch for that sort of price (which is what I would, and have, paid).

I have a John Lewis own brand machine in another house that I despaired of, as it seemed that an ordinary wash took about 4 hours. Then someone told me you just need to press a button to reduce the time. So it is in fact completely brilliant, as you can choose more or less whatever time you like, on any cycle.

When I come to replace my home one, I will buy another JL one, I think, for this reason alone. It was about £370.

Beketaten · 01/12/2020 22:54

I have a Candy. For clothes I only ever really use the Mixed setting on the lowest stain level, which is 1hr 18 mins. I put my cleaning cloths in the 14min quick wash.

DildoAndAKneeAss · 01/12/2020 22:54

Obviously, I'd have a Miele in my dreams. But I can't afford it.

MiddlesexGirl · 01/12/2020 22:56

I have a Bosch. It's got a 1 hour mixed load setting which I use all the time and reduce the temp to 30.
There are shorter programmes too. You just need to not be sucked into choosing the cotton setting etc.

MiddlesexGirl · 01/12/2020 22:57

Whats the point of Economy 7 if you can't use it? Hmm

PickAChew · 01/12/2020 22:57

My Siemens (identical to bosch) has the speed perfect which is good for smaller loads but the spin is too short to be effective.

The standard 40C cottons wash with an extra rinse is just under 3 hours but if its a smaller load, it automatically reduces it to anything from 2 hours 10 to 1 hour 45. That doesn't work with a pre-wash or towels, though, as it measures how much water is absorbed and with a pre-wash, it's already wet so there is no difference between a bundle of sheets and a basket full of joggers and jeans.

My Hotpoint has a 59 minute wash, you can have it on 30, 40 or 60 degrees. I use it most of the time, occasionally use the 30 minute wash for delicates.
