to think that watching violent films with baby is wrong?

I'm on maternity leave at the moment, our baby is 4 months old.

I take care of the baby during the day and my partner takes care of him when he comes home from work.

I take the evening hours to relax ( like taking a bath etc) as I still have a lot of postnatal health issues after the birth.

My partner is a very good dad, but he likes to sit on the floor, put the baby on his legs in his snuggleme cushion gently swaying him while he watches Samurai or Zombie films on Netflix. These films are all age 18 and I don't like them. He insists that he likes them and needs the films to wind down after a long day at work. He says the baby doesn't understand what's happening in the films.

I know our baby doesn't consciously understand what's happening in the films. Our son is quite fascinated by the lights on the screen and I worry that the grim content might influence him on a subconscious level.

AIBU to think it's inappropriate to watch these films when taking care of the baby?

The baby has no idea what's going on. It's fine.

VintageTeaRose · 26/11/2020 20:41

I would absolutely not allow that, it's very wrong IMO.

Pinkroses87 · 26/11/2020 20:43

I was worried about greys anatomy! I didn’t want screaming around baby, so would turn volume off. Def wouldn’t watch anything worse. Just feels wrong.

Takemetothebar · 26/11/2020 20:44

As long as it’s not too loud for baby’s hearing, it’s fine and you are being precious.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 26/11/2020 20:47

Yeah I'd worry about the volume because I know a lot of blokes watch these things at full blast
I watched Jeremy Kyle non stop when I was on maternity leave which I think is much worse haha

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 26/11/2020 20:48

I hope you didn't watch any 18s while pregnant. You know babies in the womb can hear?

foodster · 26/11/2020 20:50

@LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard

I personally don't like these films.

I watched Dexter all through my 1st maternity leave so I can't judge.

IntoP20 · 26/11/2020 20:51

Totally inappropriate in my opinion.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 26/11/2020 20:52

YABU your baby has no idea what he or she is watching.

FTEngineerM · 26/11/2020 20:52

A baby shouldn’t be watching tv.. at all.

Was just about to post that my husband spent many nights bouncing out first-born whilst watching Dexter! He often thinks back fondly to those nights.
sapnupuas · 26/11/2020 20:53

My newborn used to love GoT.

Suzi888 · 26/11/2020 20:53

With baby faced away from the screen it’s ok... on low volume. Sounds a bit grim! Can’t he watch something else or watch it on a laptop or iPad.

flaviaritt · 26/11/2020 20:54

It never bothered me if the baby wasn’t watching (and she wasn’t, she breastfed obsessively). The volume was never on loud. I like shows like Rome. It is very violent, but there is also lots of talking and plot.

speakout · 26/11/2020 20:55

Inappropriate.

A baby won't understand the storyline of the plot, but a baby has a high emotional intelligence- and noises of violence, shouts, screams etc will have an impact on a baby's developing brain.

By the same token as a small baby living in a house where adults are screaming and arguing.
Babies are clever little things and absorb atmosphere and feelings like a sponge.

hellolittlebaby · 26/11/2020 20:55

I would think the loud noises and flashing lights are overstimulating for a baby, especially if you're trying to get baby to settle and sleep.

NotNowPlzz · 26/11/2020 20:55

Don't be ridiculous.

NaughtipussMaximus · 26/11/2020 20:55

I’m on the fence. I’m pretty sure a 4 month old won’t be affected by it at all, but DS was about this age when I stopped watching Supernatural when he was awake, because I was worried he’d see something scary.

I did exactly the same - the whole box set! 😂

But why?

The baby doesn't understand the images or language. Can't follow the storyline. Even the lights and what not aren't going to hold his attention for long.

Laiste · 26/11/2020 20:57

It'll be the unpoular view but i think you are right OP.

I was the same and managed to get DH onside.

The screaming and growling, guns, angry and scared voices with the tense music - not nice for young ones to listen to routinely.
