Shouted at in Lidl

This morning I went to Lidl, I had a large trolley full and queued up behind a lady. I didn't put anything on the belt and kept back.
An elderly gentleman was behind me with 3 or 4 items in a basket. He had a walking stick so I asked him if he wanted to go in front of me. He thanked me and put his shopping on the belt.
He was at least a metre away from the lady and we all had masks on.
Well, the woman went ballistic, shouting at us and wagging her finger shouting at us to keep away and dont we know theres a virus about and it's not funny etc etc.
I'm afraid I shouted back saying if shes that worried maybe get her shopping delivered.
I felt so sorry for the gent, he didnt know what had hit him.

I think some people use COVID as an excuse to have appalling manners. You can tell someone how you feel without shouting and being intimidating. If she is that on edge when shopping that she feels compelled to behave like that, then suggesting that she gets her shopping delivered is helpful more than anything. I had friends getting hollered at for not wearing a mask when they are with autistic DC under 5 who get scared when they are wearing face masks. They would be the same people complaining that the child was having a meltdown when they were wearing a mask. Some people just need to be reminded to wind their neck in now and again and to leave everyone alone. Thanks for providing that service OP!

By the way, Aldi do deliver I think, and if they aren't already, I read they were investing money in providing a delivery service on par with other top supermarkets, so the advice was correct.

I'm not sure what else you expect - I have seen customers being rude/obnoxious/aggressive to one another on just about every visit I've ever made to Lidl. There's something about the place that attracts the worst of humanity. Not just the pricing, I think it's the crammed in nature and frequently unfair queuing system that pisses people off.

I know Lidl dont deliverWink if shes that bothered , get your shopping delivered by another store.
I havnt actually been in Lidl for months, but we have a new one near us so thought I'd try it out.
Who ever asked, when I shouted back at her the other lady she was with pulled her away.
I was abit scared that she would be waiting in the car park for me😖

Lidl does do Home Delivery

I've never used it because I live near a large one, and a taxi home is less than £4,
I go there sometimes, and I am not "the worst of humanity" as someone upthread said.

There are so really unreasonable, rude and nasty individuals around in real life and online.

Sadly, most of them have no idea how awful they are!

What a patronising put-down, OP. I hope you really are sorry for using it.

Every time I've asked people who've reached round me and touched me, or brushed past me, or bumped into me to stand back and give me space they've used that patronising line: 'If you're too scared to be out in public maybe you should get someone else to shop for you/ have a delivery.' It's a mean and nasty thing to say to someone who is just trying to observe guidelines and it says a lot about the people who use it.

The gent was at least a metre away, and I was behind him. She was very rude and there was no need for her outburst.

yes, it's like this out there now...

Last week a dramatic middle aged woman shouted at an elderly lady with a walker for having a slightly sagging/lopsided facemask.

She roared at the older lady, and said she was giving us all Covid, she was going to call the police, then she started to walk threateningly to this lady who must have been late 80s and shaked her fist at her and kept shouting.

It was horrible, I should have probably spoken up but ended up just going to the old lady after and asked if she was ok etc. Bit useless of me, but I was totally blindsided by the anger and venom of that crazy bitch woman

people are losing the plot.

Who treats people like this?! Who treats a wobbly 85yr old with a walker like this? Disgraceful

If you were shouting at them because they were a meter away then OP's 'put down' seems pretty mild.

If you are finding yourself being patronised, and having mean things said to you, regularly then there is probably some common cause to all these incidents. Altercations with strangers are rare for most of us.

Have you considered the posibility you might be being a dick?

You should said "what virus? Or is there a pandemic? I wondered why everyone was wearing a mask" then killed her with kindness shouting after her "have a lovely day, wow what a lovely lovely person, such a pure delight to meet"
