Shouted at in Lidl

This morning I went to Lidl, I had a large trolley full and queued up behind a lady. I didn't put anything on the belt and kept back.
An elderly gentleman was behind me with 3 or 4 items in a basket. He had a walking stick so I asked him if he wanted to go in front of me. He thanked me and put his shopping on the belt.
He was at least a metre away from the lady and we all had masks on.
Well, the woman went ballistic, shouting at us and wagging her finger shouting at us to keep away and dont we know theres a virus about and it's not funny etc etc.
I'm afraid I shouted back saying if shes that worried maybe get her shopping delivered.
I felt so sorry for the gent, he didnt know what had hit him.

And to the snobby poster earlier, I know several millionaires who shop in Aldi and Lidl.None of them to my knowledge have ever encountered behaviour of the type you describe. Perhaps it's time to move?

CoronaIsWatching · 01/10/2020 18:26

I loathe the queue at Lidl, you see the worst of humanity there. The self checkout queue is even worse.

MintyMabel · 01/10/2020 18:32

I think some people use COVID as an excuse to have appalling manners. You can tell someone how you feel without shouting and being intimidating. If she is that on edge when shopping that she feels compelled to behave like that, then suggesting that she gets her shopping delivered is helpful more than anything.

Surely this applies to the OP too. She shouted back. She wasn’t giving helpful advice, she was being cheeky to someone who shouted at her.

Perhaps the lady can’t afford Tesco prices and delivery. So no, not helpful.

IdkickJilliansass · 01/10/2020 18:36

It’s not her job to give helpful advice 😂😂

ripples101 · 01/10/2020 18:36

She was wrong to shout at you and the gent. She didn’t need to do that. You were wrong in engaging her with your passive aggressive nonsense saying “if you’re concerned to be around people then get your shopping delivered.

Both of you acted and reacted in an unnecessary way.

Yes she shouted. You and the older gentleman could have both stood back. Situation over. She’s still be wrong for shouting. You’d both be right for rising above it.

I was stood in a queue outside Sainsbury’s today. A young girl, wearing a mask, stood right behind me. I was also wearing a mask. I asked her to step back a little, not to be so close. She looked pissed off towards me, but she stepped back. I thanked her. And that was it.

We can all help and be considerate towards each other. Shouting isn’t the answer. Hence why the woman was wrong to do that. But shouting back isn’t the answer either.

woofwoof1880 · 01/10/2020 18:38

The shouty woman was rude and there is no need for it. COVID is just the latest excuse for these type of people to excuse their behaviour. It's not about social distancing it's purely about them finding an opportunity to be antisocial.

Love the diagram OP. I long to start a thread that requires me to draw a diagram.

WendyE · 01/10/2020 18:47

YANBU I would have done the same, stupid woman.
You're right, if she's that paranoid, she should have her shopping delivered to her home.

ripples101 · 01/10/2020 18:49

“If she’s that paranoid”

Confused
FreshFreesias · 01/10/2020 18:54

She was hysterical. And mad. A crazy lockdown bedwetter.

CatSmith · 01/10/2020 18:57

She shouted..... and?

I really don’t get the point of your thread.

Mydogmylife · 01/10/2020 18:57

@contrmary@CoronaIsWatching

Sadly you pair must live in very unpleasant areas, as both lidl and aldi near me provide a much better shopping experience than most other supermarkets.
Total snobs!

ilovesooty · 01/10/2020 19:03

@FreshFreesias

She was rude but the OP behaved badly too.

That bedwetters phrase is utterly horrible. I can't see what anyone gets out of using it.

Ponoka7 · 01/10/2020 19:06

So every scientist etc is telling us that social distancing of 2 meters is what matters, but we can ignore that, because we can't catch Covid in Lidl?

It isn't difficult to stay two meters away. I don't agree with the shouting, but people are scared and/or are very vulnerable.

Ponoka7 · 01/10/2020 19:10

@WheresTheFire, you think that people who want to stick to the guidance shouldn't leave their homes?

KatherineJaneway · 01/10/2020 19:12

@IdkickJilliansass

I thought that too *@KatherineJaneway*
Glad isn't just me @IdkickJilliansass
WheresTheFire · 01/10/2020 19:18

@Roselilly36 your DS sounds like a lovely young man, you should be proud.

Fatarseflanagan09 · 01/10/2020 19:19

It doesn’t really matter if ALDI and Lidl deliver or not, none of us want to catch COVID and there’s no excuse for someone that screams and screeches, I’d have told her to fuck off, if she can’t be civil then I wouldn’t, stupid entitled fucker probably got away with it once too often.

ripples101 · 01/10/2020 19:24

“Stupid entitled fucker”

Confused
WheresTheFire · 01/10/2020 19:29

@ripples101 if she had asked us nicely to move back then we would have. But she just exploded into a tirade of shouting and finger wagging.
@CatSmith there are 100's of threads that have no point. I think people are free to post what they feel strongly about arnt they?
@Ponoka7 of course I dont think they should stay at home, but i do think that they should have manners

OP posts:
ripples101 · 01/10/2020 19:47

I agree @WheresTheFire

She should have asked nicely. There was no need for her to go ballistic. She was wrong to do that.

You didn’t need to bite back though. Ignore her shouting. Just stand back. It’s not worth engaging at all with someone who has “gone ballistic”.

I can think of a myriad of reasons why she reacted as she did. Doesn’t make her right to shout at you. But equally doesn’t mean you have to engage with her on ANY level.

All in all, it’s really not that big of a deal.

rayoflightboy · 01/10/2020 20:07

Really, you think @ripples101 the op should have minded her business and not said anything. To a women who was verbally abusing an older gentlemen.

So if it was your elderly family member you would have been fine with the woman going "ballistic"and nobody stepping up to say something.

I really doubt that.

Cantbreathe2020 · 01/10/2020 20:08

@zukiecat

Lidl does do Home Delivery

I've never used it because I live near a large one, and a taxi home is less than £4,
I go there sometimes, and I am not "the worst of humanity" as someone upthread said.

No, they really don't!
Riv12345 · 01/10/2020 20:10

Well done you !!!

rayoflightboy · 01/10/2020 20:15

@Cantbreathe2020 Lidl do delivery here in Dublin.

So yes, they really do.

Scoobidoo · 01/10/2020 20:17

People are scared. Many are also angry that ignoring guidelines has resulted in cases increasing and more lockdowns imposed / threatened.

She was rude, but you escalated the situation with a silly sarcastic response.

Some understanding in these difficult times goes a long way.
