Shouted at in Lidl

WheresTheFire · 01/10/2020 13:53

This morning I went to Lidl, I had a large trolley full and queued up behind a lady. I didn't put anything on the belt and kept back.
An elderly gentleman was behind me with 3 or 4 items in a basket. He had a walking stick so I asked him if he wanted to go in front of me. He thanked me and put his shopping on the belt.
He was at least a metre away from the lady and we all had masks on.
Well, the woman went ballistic, shouting at us and wagging her finger shouting at us to keep away and dont we know theres a virus about and it's not funny etc etc.
I'm afraid I shouted back saying if shes that worried maybe get her shopping delivered.
I felt so sorry for the gent, he didnt know what had hit him.

"Maybe the people who know they'd be incapable of observing distancing should have shopping delivered?"

Hear, hear!

LostFrog · 01/10/2020 17:01

I must live in a very boring town, this sort of thing never happens to me. I think I would have been too taken aback to reply as you did but honestly what are the chances of catching Covid in a supermarket queue where everyone is wearing a mask anyway? People are really losing the plot.

Howlooseisyourgoose · 01/10/2020 17:03

@Lweji

What would you have said @Llewji?

I hope no poor soul has received an email with your post. Wink

Anyway... I have stated what I'd have said earlier. But in addition to it, I probably would have said there was no need to shout. Even better to point out, as a pp mentioned, that shouting is as bad as standing too close.
It's just a shout, from over a meter away. Not physical aggression.
Apart from the risk of perforated eardrums, shouts don't harm.

And rather than stew on it
Clearly, shouting back didn't help the OP, as she'll still stewing about it here. Grin

Oops @Lweji sorry!

I think OP seems quite happy and cheerful!

I think she would have been more upset if she hadn’t spoken up!

rayoflightboy · 01/10/2020 17:05

@WheresTheFire you where right.Imagine if that was your dad or gd being shouted at.I,for one would be glad of someone sticking up for him.

Anyway she will probably shout at the wrong person someday. And it wont be insults she be showered with.

WheresTheFire · 01/10/2020 17:07

@EasyAndy101 I didnt just say "well get your shopping delivered" I said "if you are that concerned about being around people maybe consider having your shopping delivered" And I was social distancing thanks.
I hate shopping at the best of times and I'm sure if I was that terrified of people I would do everything I could to not go in a supermarket.
@VinylDetective not proud of myself no, I just replied to her ranting which I'm sure 99% of people in the same situation would have

Shedbuilder · 01/10/2020 17:08

Maybe she doesn't have a computer or smartphone or a credit card?

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/10/2020 17:12

You might have been but when you added someone in the middle he wouldn't have been. And it was you who invited him to do that. Why didn't you stand back another 2m so he could be 2m away from everyone?

user1497207191 · 01/10/2020 17:12
@Shedbuilder....nobody brushed her, touched her or reached round her!!
The gent was at least a metre away, and I was behind him. She was very rude and there was no need for her outburst.
I was not patronising
Was the gent wearing a mask?

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/10/2020 17:13

She probably isn't terrified of people. Again that's an arsey type response. She is probably quite OK with people as long as they follow the rules and stay 2m apart!

Have to say everyone manages it in Waitrose but it does seem to be very lacking in Aldi and Lidl.

WheresTheFire · 01/10/2020 17:27

@JacobReesMogadishu I'm obviously the dregs of society then as I dont shop in waitrose😄 and i was at least the length of the trolley behind the man, and a conveyor belt and trolley behind the woman.

@user1497207191 yes the gent was wearing a mask

Covid has brought out the worst in idiots and tbh it's those who are worse off financially as in they can't afford home delivery from more expensive supermarkets and have to rely on public transport that are having to deal with them.

Buses and trains are such a nightmare now we've barely left our town for months.

Roselilly36 · 01/10/2020 17:44

You weren’t being unreasonable and were kind enough to let someone with a basket go in front. I think people are just so stressed by Covid they are very reactive. God knows what people’s behaviour will be like by the Spring, it’s going to be a tough winter.

Just to make you feel better OP my v polite 19 y o DS, was shouted at by an elderly woman, the other day, he was walking down a very narrow twitten, he’s 6’5” and takes big strides, he was already walking down, the woman decided to walk up, he said good morning, she said so much for SD! There was no space to SD, the twitten is no more than a metre in width & 6 yards in length. Why didn’t she just wait? People are just so odd. When I asked him what he said, he said I just smiled & walked on.

rayoflightboy · 01/10/2020 17:48

Maybe she doesn't have a computer or smartphone or a credit card?

Maybe she has mental health or Autism.

Or maybe this is more likely.Shes just a loud mouthed arsehole.

She could have asked the man to move back. But she didnt, she escalated it.Not the op.

And maybe the man would have stood back once he put his shopping up.Maybe have a bit of sympathy for an elderly man with a walking stick.Who is more likely to be unsteady on his feet.

The op did a nice thing.

keeprocking · 01/10/2020 17:48

If someone started yelling Don't you know there's a virus, I'm afraid my reply would be No, really, do tell. Passive aggression can be such fun, winds idiots up every time.

LindaEllen · 01/10/2020 18:02

@VeganVeal

I dont think Aldi deliver do they?
As it happened in Lidl, I'm not sure this is relevant.
AwaAnBileYerHeid · 01/10/2020 18:05

She shouldn't have shouted. But at the same time, she could be in a vulnerable category and you/the man were the last one long line of people who had walked close to her without masks/not kept the correct social distance/leaned over or brushed past her and so on that day. She may have had no choice but to quickly venture out for food and essentials and could be out of her mind with worry at being put at risk by so many idiots out there.

Teddybear27 · 01/10/2020 18:05

I have noticed with some people that this virus brings out the worst in them. Most people are lovely..

IdkickJilliansass · 01/10/2020 18:07

@ChickenyChick

yes, it's like this out there now...

Last week a dramatic middle aged woman shouted at an elderly lady with a walker for having a slightly sagging/lopsided facemask.

She roared at the older lady, and said she was giving us all Covid, she was going to call the police, then she started to walk threateningly to this lady who must have been late 80s and shaked her fist at her and kept shouting.

It was horrible, I should have probably spoken up but ended up just going to the old lady after and asked if she was ok etc. Bit useless of me, but I was totally blindsided by the anger and venom of that crazy bitch woman

people are losing the plot.

Who treats people like this?! Who treats a wobbly 85yr old with a walker like this? Disgraceful

That’s disgusting 😡 that would be enough to terrify a lot of elderly people to the point they didn’t want to go out again, what is wrong with people.
Lweji · 01/10/2020 18:07

I didnt just say "well get your shopping delivered" I said "if you are that concerned about being around people maybe consider having your shopping delivered"

Still nasty. You don't know why she was shopping and she should feel safe enough shopping.
Was she right not to feel safe? Probably not. And she shouldn't have shouted.

KatherineJaneway · 01/10/2020 18:10

Every time someone brushes past me "fucks sake, ignorant shits can't fucking wait. So much for personal space. Fucking fuckwits" is my involuntary response. I don't like shopping, can you tell.
I notice they tend to stay away from me from then on.

You'd get a mouthful in response to your passive aggressive crap where I live Grin

IdkickJilliansass · 01/10/2020 18:12

I thought that too @KatherineJaneway

jerrywesterby · 01/10/2020 18:18

Do people really think that they can catch it from someone standing a metre away wearing a mask for a few minutes at the till? The virus isn't that good surely??

mollyminniemo · 01/10/2020 18:20

Will those responding "errrr I dont think Lidl/Aldi deliver" just STOP. Stop being so anal and pedantic.
Its not the point of the post- she could stay in and get her shopping from any supermarket delivery - you're missing the point in your rush to correct the OP as usual.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 01/10/2020 18:22

Top diagram OP.

Home delivery from either Aldi or Lidl would not permit browsing in the Aisle of Dreams and therefore should be illegal.

IdkickJilliansass · 01/10/2020 18:23

Shouty woman was ridiculous and I would have told her to knob off, I hope the elderly man was ok.
