Shouted at in Lidl

This morning I went to Lidl, I had a large trolley full and queued up behind a lady. I didn't put anything on the belt and kept back.
An elderly gentleman was behind me with 3 or 4 items in a basket. He had a walking stick so I asked him if he wanted to go in front of me. He thanked me and put his shopping on the belt.
He was at least a metre away from the lady and we all had masks on.
Well, the woman went ballistic, shouting at us and wagging her finger shouting at us to keep away and dont we know theres a virus about and it's not funny etc etc.
I'm afraid I shouted back saying if shes that worried maybe get her shopping delivered.
I felt so sorry for the gent, he didnt know what had hit him.

@Shedbuilder

No, but you took her down with a patronising remark that didn't address the situation. Far better to rationally point out that you and the gent were both well away from her. She's scared. Lots of people are. Particularly older people who've been living on their own for months.

Telling someone that they shouldn't be out/ should stay at home and have a delivery is just mean. It's become the sneery go-to put-down for anyone who reminds people to stand back.

Are you serious? I think OP was absolutely right. Anyone shouting at me for this would get shouted at too. OP did nothing wrong, the other woman was at the other end of the till, she had no business of who was at the conveyor belt.

Did you sign up just for this thread?
Hmm
Topseyt · 01/10/2020 15:29

I think your put-down was perfect, actually. Exactly what she deserved and not at all patronising.

It is all but impossible to completely social distance in a busy supermarket, like it or not. That is why masks are needed for those able to wear them.

I dont think Aldi deliver do they?

That's how children behave with each other, isn't it? Until the parents or teachers tell them to stop.
I mean, we can react like that, but to be proud of it and advise it is just baffling.

Justaboy · 01/10/2020 15:33

A Lidil breakdown in civilisation :(

😉 Boom tish!
Potterpotterpotter · 01/10/2020 15:41

@loutypips

Well he should have been 2 metres away, not just one.
Distancing is 1 metre plus in England so no he doesn’t have to be 2 metres away

So we should just let assholes shout at us whenever they feel like it?
WheresTheFire · 01/10/2020 15:48

Ok, to answer some questions;
@bruffin, no I didnt sign up just for this, I've been on here since 2015, I'm a serial name changer
@spam88 nobody was ignoring the law! (See photo)
@lweji she was shouting at me and the elderly man, wagging her finger at us both as she raged. The man turned to me and said he was sorry he went in front of me now and I smiled at him. This caused a new barrage of spite from her telling us it wasnt funny!
@legoandloldolls 😀

Good job she didnt use the self service, no self distancing there atall!

Just to be clear, I've enclosed a diagramWink

@Potterpotterpotter actually it's still 2 metres.

•	Current guidance says that “where possible, you should maintain 2m between people”. The guidance should change to state that 2m or 1m with risk mitigation (where 2m is not viable) are acceptable, and that businesses should set out the mitigations that they will introduce in their risk assessment.

the risk of transmission increases by 2-10 times at 1m compared to 2m.

So the woman was within her rights to ask him to move away. I don't care if someone wants to stand a metre away, I want them double that distance.

Everyone did the eyebrow raise thing to each other and that was that but i felt bad for the man who got shouted at.

I love the fact that so many people are now doing exaggerated eye movements, now that we’re wearing masks. 😷 I’ve noticed it more lately.

Justaboy that was worthy of a laugh.

ZoomRoom · 01/10/2020 15:52

I agree some people who were arses before covid are still arses now and using Covid as a reason to justify being arses.

Lweji · 01/10/2020 15:54

So we should just let assholes shout at us whenever they feel like it?

And how does being an asshole back help?
They shout, you shout, then what? You're just like them.

The OP's reply (even without the shouting back) was even less mature than the initial shouting.

DeliciouslyFemale · 01/10/2020 15:54

I smiled at him. This caused a new barrage of spite from her telling us it wasnt funny!

😐 you were wearing a mask, how did she know you smiled at him. Were you doing the exaggerated eye movements I meant ironed earlier, or did you express yourself through interpretive dance?

DeliciouslyFemale · 01/10/2020 15:55

meant ironed earlier = mentioned earlier

Lweji · 01/10/2020 15:55

I've changed my mind.

As you have provided a diagram, then YANBU, OP. Grin

BoudiccaAnn · 01/10/2020 15:58

The irony is that it's all the shouting that spreads germs (even with masks). Doesn't make sense that ShoutyLady was shouting about safety when she was actually the one making things worse.

Very true.

@WheresTheFire love your jaunty ponytail!

WheresTheFire · 01/10/2020 16:04

@justaboy😂

Yes I smiled behind my mask😁 I like to think you can tell by peoples eyes that they are happy or sad
I am indeed guilty of exaggerating my eye movements,I wear a mask for 12 hours a day at work, it's funny how much we all move our eyes when talking to each other now👀

it's better to answer back and stand up for yourself rather than stew on it.

The amount of times people have thought they can shout/push/swear at me because I'm a 5'2" female is shocking. Sadly you learn to stand up for yourself.

You can definitely tell when people are smiling. I've smiled at loads of people wearing my mask and been smiled at with people wearing a mask.

Lweji · 01/10/2020 16:06

You don't have to shout back or throw an insult, or similar, at the person to stand up for yourself.
Being assertive is quite a different thing.

WheresTheFire · 01/10/2020 16:06

@ValleyoftheTrolls thanks, I dont have a ponytail in real lifeGrin I think shouty lady did, I wasnt close enough to study her hairstyle😬
