To think women can look stunning with short hair?

Was watching Cliffhanger last night and the heroine had short haor and was just stunning. Likewise Demi Moore and Princess Di suit the look.
I do like my long hair and dont have the guts for a pixie cut as I have slight jowls. Following on from my. " all the girls now have big eyebrows" thread, I'm now observing that hardly any young girls have short hair! This has been done before and I'm prob just jealous of the long locks....but what was once a cool statement is no longer a thing. Why?

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace 👋 👋

Btw I have 4 daughters. Eldest periodically shaves her head then grows it out again. The other 3 have theirs about chin length. My 14 year old wants to shave hers but that will cause issues at school... maybe at the start of the next summer holiday or she can wait until she’s done her GCSEs.

I don’t care about hair. It grows back. My 16 year old has dyed hers purple to celebrate going away to college 😁

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 07/09/2020 08:20

Oh no. Back on the fence because someone might find me unfeminine and be unable to look at me.

@swampytiggaa your dungarees look excellent cloth to rend if it all gets a bit much.

Racing towards 50 here and have been rocking my middle-aged cloak of invisibility for a few years now.

hippopootamus · 07/09/2020 08:25

How come men never worry about whether they have the bone structure for short hair? Smile

swampytiggaa · 07/09/2020 08:30

As you can see on my wedding day I had short hair. 19 years ago 💕

Tbh I’ve generally had short hair never managed longer than a chin length curly bob which was generally scraped back into a shit ponytail. Never really seen the attraction in long hair personally but lots of people like it 🙂

My husband has also taken to the clippers over lockdown. He has been cutting to a number 4 or 5.

Got a new set of clippers set them to 4 and started cutting. He ran upstairs with his hair half done absolutely horrified... the numbers weren’t the grade length they were mm so he’d given himself an unexpected grade 1 😂😂

It doesn’t really suit him but it will grow back fairly quickly so no harm done 😂😂

JalapenoDave · 07/09/2020 08:37

@heartsonacake that's your opinion and you're entitled to that. I agree that some women cannot pull it off. Myself, I would love to rock the feminine mermaid look with hair down to my arse - however my hair is very fine so unfortunately it turns to a straggly mess once it reaches my shoulders. Not all of us are blessed with thick locks. For this reason, I keep mine short. I apologise if my raging masculinity offends you.
Now, I must go finish chopping down that tree and swigging back that case of Special Brew whilst Top Gear plays in the background.
Smile

Requinblanc · 07/09/2020 08:40

But there is also the basic requirement that to have long hair you need to have healthy, thick-ish hair to start with.

If like me you were born with rather limp and thin hair, there is no point of trying to grow it because it simply won't look healthy.

My hair usually a short bob and I have also had pixie cuts because that it what suits my hair best. And yes I think women can be attractive with short hair.

Bluntness100 · 07/09/2020 08:43

I really don’t understand some of the comments on here. There is a sort of sneering under tone that if a woman chooses long hair she’s doing it for reasons other than she likes it, finds it easy, and thinks she suits it, peer pressure, men, reality shows and a load of other nonsense.

Whilst in the same breath stating I’ve short hair and I look fab. So because the poster likes it and suits it, finds it easier.

It’s our right to choose how we present ourselves. Without other women sneering that if our hair is long it’s because we buy into reality shows or some other nonsense.

How about some acceptance,,,

wafflyversatile · 07/09/2020 08:44

YABU for it crossing your mind that they wouldnt.

swampytiggaa · 07/09/2020 08:50

@Bluntness100 I love long hair on other people and when I run I get huge hair envy when I see women run past with long shiny swishy ponytails. I don’t think short hair is better than long hair but it definitely is on me 😂😂

I wish more people had the confidence to do what the fuck they want to with their hair (and bodies tbh)

I was helping my girlchild chose hair dye on Saturday and a friend of mine said it wish I was brave enough to dye my hair’. My comment was that it would grow out so no reason not to experiment. That attitude seems unusual tho.

Hear hear swampy. Your photos are amazing too - as was nicelegsshameabouttheface's. I was trying to say not very clearly upthread that (unless you have a studio full of make up artists and stylists ready to attend to you), looking stunning is not just about fitting in with the prevalent ideas of beauty but about how you feel inside. That's why individual women (and men) are entitled to look how they want.

ShebaShimmyShake · 07/09/2020 09:35

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane

Sorry, that was the wrong person. It’s *@swampytiggaa* who looks amazing. I’m sure you look “ok” Sheba. 😉
I look like Worzel Gummidge with longer hair at the moment!
Frazzled2207 · 07/09/2020 09:37

absolutely but you need to have the right face and head shape I think. I have massive envy of Robin Wright's hair on House of Cards .

I actually think some of them should. I often see men with hair like mine cut very short and I want to tell them to let it grow a few more inches. Joe Wicks has longish hair for a man and it looks divine.
OscarWildesCat · 07/09/2020 09:47

I have a short pixie crop and get loads of compliments on my hair. My hair is fine so doesn’t work longer, I do look envy women with long think hair but mine would simply never look like that without extensions and hours of blow drying. I think fashion dictates hairstyles, perhaps my pixie crop is old fashioned, I definitely think younger girls are going for long bouncy waves just now but things might change.

OscarWildesCat · 07/09/2020 09:47

Typos 🙄

LakieLady · 07/09/2020 09:53

I don't think I could go so short now I'm old and wrinkly

Judi Dench still looks great with short hair and I believe she's over 80 now!

lynsey91 · 07/09/2020 10:14

I hate going to the hairdressers and particularly hate having my hair washed by someone else but I go every 5 weeks as I have a short style.

I am 65, overweight and far from pretty but short hair suits me. It is very short at the sides and back (clippered) but the top is a little longer. It's easy to manage and I wash it every day in the shower, give it a quick comb and that's it. Don't have to use a hairdryer.

Whenever I think another woman's hair looks good it is almost always a short style. Personally I think long hair only looks good if you have thick hair and, for me, either very straight or very curly.

Of course we should all have our hair how we want it but I just find long hair boring looking. Short styles are so much more interesting.

I agree that many celebs look far better with short hair. Halle Berry looks absolutely stunning with short hair but very ordinary with long. The same is true in my opinion of Frankie Bridge. I thought how beautiful she looked with short hair then saw her with longer hair and didn't recognise her. Again thought she looked ordinary with long hair.

Kylie suits short hair more, the actress in Big Bang Theory does (don't think long hair suits her at all), Scarlett Johansson, Katy Perry, Charlize Theron, Emma Watson, Carey Mulligan, Victoria Beckham, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Kate Moss all suit short hair far more than long

iswhois · 07/09/2020 10:18

I agree!!! Especially as I have a bleach blonde pixie cut!! Grin

I do however find it harder work than long hair. I look like I've been electrocuted every morning to have to wash it straight away and gel it. With long hair you can just tie it back.

I always get a lot of comments though

SpectacledWolf · 07/09/2020 10:24

I look like I've been electrocuted every morning :o me too! I love my short hair but when I wake up I look like Beaker. I have to wash it every morning but on the plus side it's v. quick to dry and style.

I wake up and go to tell the kids something important like "don't forget your PE stuff today" and they fall about laughing.

Wheytaminute · 07/09/2020 10:28

I love short haircuts. I have had very short to very long over the years - some styles suited me more than others. (I can say that a short bob with a perm did NOT suit. ha ha).

Currently still growing out last autumns v short fade. Lockdown has been useful for the messy phase.

I find it odd that the majority of teens/young women all have long straight hair. So high maintenance and no individuality. But the ones who DO have a short cut really stand out. I remember sitting in a school hall with DS and in his group of friends two girls had pixie cuts and looked stunning.

Ultimately it's up to the person to choose how they want their hair. We don't all fit the sterotype of beauty as portrayed in the media - whatever makes a person feel confident and happy works for me.

Sarahlou63 · 07/09/2020 10:34

I shaved my head (no. 4) a few weeks into lockdown and love it! Run the clippers over it every couple of weeks and that's it. I'm 57 Grin

GoatsInBoats · 07/09/2020 10:36

I don't agree that long hair is automatically more flattering for fat people. I'm pretty fat and I don't think long hair suits me at all, it makes my face and neck blur into a chunk of melted spam.

SerenDippitty · 07/09/2020 10:38

In my last job I did newspage editing including posting photos and profiles of new starters. It was eerie how similar the young women looked.

DidoAtTheLido · 07/09/2020 10:39

I have never seen the attraction of what is essentially dead stuff hanging off your head and have always had short hair. It’s thick and very textured and OK.

I can’t bear people swishing their hair about and have twice been hit in the face by women swishing their hair back. Yuk.
