To think women can look stunning with short hair?

Was watching Cliffhanger last night and the heroine had short haor and was just stunning. Likewise Demi Moore and Princess Di suit the look.
I do like my long hair and dont have the guts for a pixie cut as I have slight jowls. Following on from my. " all the girls now have big eyebrows" thread, I'm now observing that hardly any young girls have short hair! This has been done before and I'm prob just jealous of the long locks....but what was once a cool statement is no longer a thing. Why?

There was a woman this morning on Don't Tell the Bride. She had mega short hair and was stunning.

Her name was Elle. But I can't find a pic of her. She was so beautiful.

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace

You really don't need to be pretty to opt for short hair.

My user name ain't my user name for nothing - and my ears stick out a bit to boot - but I still rock the look, no matter what anyone says Blush

I love your face! you are not conventional, and I wonder what that word even means? You have a bright and perfectly human, beautiful face. It is a face I would warm to and want to know more about.

"shame about the face' is likely a joke, I hope, but if not, I have no idea what to say. You remind me of a female version of Phil Daniels (a 90's version) like his sister or something. He was fucking gorgeous.

MrsCattywampus · 06/09/2020 22:58

We had short hair trends way before the 80s! 1920s teenagers here.

I also think it’s so weird how hairstyles have become so much more stereotyped and narrow in the last 20-30 years, I’d love to know how and why that happened. I’ve always had short hair - I was a tomboy as a child, I tried growing it longer later on but it never suited me as well as short. I’m not naga munchetty levels of chic at all but it never seems to have put men off.

I have heard it’s making a comeback now though - hope so.

You really do. I remember you posting this photo a while ago on another thread, and I loved the look then, too.
ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 06/09/2020 23:01

I used to have short hair in my 30’s I loved it mostly but what I did hate is how I looked in the morning! Bed head did not even cover it, I looked like I had an electric shock, now I have long hair it’s much easier, rather than go to the hairdresser every 6 weeks I go twice a year at most. I don’t think I will ever go short again by choice because now I’m in my 50’s I would feel too exposed but I do look back at pictures and miss it sometimes.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 06/09/2020 23:02

My sister has short hair and is totally gorgeous. She's very slim with high cheekbones and her short hair really shows that off. She looks better now than she did with long hair.

Sparklesocks · 06/09/2020 23:04

I think a lot of women see their hair as their safety blanket and like it long(er) as part of that. I used to be overweight and I admit I liked my hair longer then as I felt it balanced out my chubby face, whereas short hair would feel me leaving exposed.

I think generally you should have whichever hairstyle you’re comfortable with! And not restrict yourself to hair you think you ‘should’ have.

@Sallygoround631

Thank you, that is so kind Blush The user name is taken from a 1979 song by The Monks about a mysogynistic guy who goes on a blind date. It's worth a listen on YouTube, if only for the ending Grin

I chose the name because I think it sums me up. I'm blissfully happy with my lot and I wouldn't change anything. I just got better legs than I did a face Grin

My opinion no doubt comes from being forced to have short hair all through my childhood. I hate short hair. Some people look absolutely stunning, but you need good facial structure.

I also don't like seeing short hair pulled back into a 2-3 inch stump of a pony tail - it just looks silly.

I'm of the age where, apparently, long hair is inappropriate according to some. That's fine - I like long hair, I have long hair.

DuesToTheDirt · 06/09/2020 23:08

I had very short hair back in the 80s. I wasn't a beauty, but the hair looked fabulous and suited me much better than the long hair I had previously. I don't think I could go so short now I'm old and wrinkly.

bibbitybobbitycats · 06/09/2020 23:09

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace there is nowt wrong with your face! You look awesome.

Bella2020 · 06/09/2020 23:09

I used to have shorter hair with lots of volume, texture and movement and I loved it. Of course women can look great with shorter hairdos. Why oh why do some of us allow out of date male ideas of what makes a woman beautiful to tell us that we must have long hair.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 06/09/2020 23:11

I don't think I could go so short now I'm old and wrinkly.

So am I. But ..... meh. In the words of Twisted Sister: 'Then the truth it hit me; Got me off my knees; It's my life I'm living; I'll live as I please.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 06/09/2020 23:14

I think Gemma Atherton suits short hair rather than long, she is beautiful either way of course but with short hair it really shows off her stunning face.

I've just cut mine properly short and it's da bomb. Should have done it decades ago.

I do have cheekbones you could cut yourself on, though.

My hair tends to the fluffy, so a bob was disastrous: I looked like a skull in an angora wig.

SortByPriceLowToHigh · 06/09/2020 23:24

No, is yours?

SortByPriceLowToHigh · 06/09/2020 23:26

Ahhh man, I forgot the reply thing. That ^^ was for whoever asked me if my name was Karen. This is my hair, hope it’s KARENY enough for you

I have a nob that is chin length, sometimes I wonder if I look feminine enough but lost of the time I don't. I have let it grow through lockdown but because I have fine hair even now at shoulded length it hangs so flat. Whereas when it's shorter there is much more volume.

SapphireSeptember · 06/09/2020 23:27

Absolutely they can! I have a friend who's had her hair very short in the past, and she has quite a 1960s fashion sense, and she rocked it. Another friend has short hair too and she looks better with it short than when it was long (although I liked her long hair.)
I've had really short hair and I hated it though, I like my hair long (and I love long hair on men.) Short hair is easier to look after and I'd use less shampoo, but I'm not chopping mine off. I'm going to be one of those women with waist length white hair and I can't wait.

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace I think you look amazing in that picture, and I love your jacket! Smile

WiserOlder · 06/09/2020 23:30

I had short hair when I was in my 20s and it looked great. It'd be so ageing on me now at 50 I think. So it's shoulder length now.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/09/2020 23:38

I chin length nob would be hard to carry off even for a man to be fair :o

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/09/2020 23:43

Women can obviously do whatever the fuck they want with their hair, that caveat aside, I do think most women look better with hair a little longer. If a woman is quite edgy then a short cut with a longer don't can look awesome. I'm thinking of Pink, really, she's awesome and wouldn't suit long hair.

Tillygetsit · 06/09/2020 23:48

I have psoriasis on my scalp and very thick hair so it's been driving me to distraction over lockdown.
Had a very short pixie cut despite being a little jowly and I love it. Makes my face look slimmer and softer which I was not expecting.

nettie434 · 06/09/2020 23:49

I agree that fewer women have short hair now. I had very short hair for years but it's a bit longer now. I agree that Halle Berry, Gemma Arterton, Frankie Bridge and Naga Munchetty all look stunning with short hair but - as nicelegsshameabouttheface shows, looking great is often about looking confident and comfortable in your skin.

SortbyPriceLowtoHigh - great hair and fantastic colour too!

seayork2020 · 07/09/2020 00:04

Like any hairstyle short works on some people and not others, same as long I guess - people should have what they want I have long which is at different lengths depending on mood and laziness.

I don't feel the need to have short hair
