To think women can look stunning with short hair?

Was watching Cliffhanger last night and the heroine had short haor and was just stunning. Likewise Demi Moore and Princess Di suit the look.
I do like my long hair and dont have the guts for a pixie cut as I have slight jowls. Following on from my. " all the girls now have big eyebrows" thread, I'm now observing that hardly any young girls have short hair! This has been done before and I'm prob just jealous of the long locks....but what was once a cool statement is no longer a thing. Why?

I don’t think you need to have a certain type of face for short hair, it suits lots of people, but it seems that some people feel very exposed.

I do think that in Britain women are more fixated on long hair, we go to France a lot and I see loads more French women with short hair.

I have had both long and short hair and much prefer to have it short.

I don’t find it difficult to maintain, in fact I don’t do anything to it at all to except wash it!

It's not the cut, it's the confidence to carry it off. Young, older or inbetween, if you have the courage to wear your hair how you choose, it will look great!

@cbt944

If you enjoy spending hours of your life in a hairdresser's, in front of a cruel mirror, in bad lighting, while someone faffs about making pointless small-talk and de-improving your look, or doing the opposite of what you've asked, and if you enjoy paying for that privilege - if you are incapable of doing your own colour, or if you like short hair with flicky layers, or smooth bobs, or if you are one of the very few women in the world, other than Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby, who actually suits a pixie - then knock yourself out.

But no need to impose any of your odd style rules on other women.

Oh the irony.

Added to the list of things that are assigned a moral value on Mumsnet: how long or short one wears one's hair.

Michelle Williams - beautiful with her short hair.

My face is too round.

SerenDippitty · 07/09/2020 11:46

I agree short hair can look great and youdon’t Necessarily have to have a “pretty” face to carry it off.

I have mine in a mid neck length bob. Love it. Long enough to be swishy and tuck neatly behind my ears but not long enough to get in anyone else’s way!

cyclingmad · 07/09/2020 12:01

My short hair looks better when I'm slimmer aka my face is limber, having put on weight it wouldn't look as good imo.

A guy I was seeing casually always said he preferred longer hair so he could grab it Hmm and would never say short hair looked good on me...lucky I dont need his validation and always kept my hair short Grin

PhilSwagielka · 07/09/2020 12:13

Yes, some women do suit it better than long. I've got a couple of friends who have short hair and it looks fantastic on them. My mum's always worn it short as well and I just can't imagine her with long hair, she'd look weird. Some women have the right sort of faces for it.

LonelyFromCorona · 07/09/2020 12:24

They can, but generally don't

sofiessofa · 07/09/2020 12:31

I just found an old photo of myself at 20 with a pixie cut and I looked pretty good. However at 46 and carrying an extra 4 stones weight I don’t think I’d look so great!!

Looking back at graduation / school photos from the 90s there was much more variation and lots of ‘sensible’ short bobs etc. Looking at graduation photos from friends kids now the girls all seem to have long styled hair and look so much more groomed and model like.

MaggieAndHopey · 07/09/2020 12:42

I have short hair - a fade at the sides, messy on the top, usually up in a quiff. I like it. I've tried to grow it out a few times out of curiosity but never lasted long.

After 7-8 months I have just had mine cut back to a pixie crop today. A bit shocked at present I must admit. But it is so much less effort. Mine had grown into a shortish bob, but in reality it was a mushroom and I have thick, immovable lego hair. I find it surprising that posters think longer hair is better thick. It took me ages to dry, then when I did anything strenuous, it became a huge bouffant.

My hairdresser asked me what I didn't like about it and told me that if I wanted to maintain a bob look with my hair, I would probably need straighteners. Too much work for me.

My DH does not like it and tells me I resemble a coconut. Strangely despite having at least 3-4 inches off, my grandsons have not even noticed!

I was quite pretty when young, not such much as I head towards 60 but I feel fresher and more up to date with a pixie. I felt the bob a bit frumpy on me. I do think that you need to let it get to really needing a cut before doing so, otherwise you head towards too short and brutal.

BashfulClam · 07/09/2020 13:23

My hair is really fine, almost toddler like in texture. If I got it short it would just sit flat as it does not curl or hold any style. My mum has the same hair texture but has always had her short (she goes to a barber), it is just better they and ‘meh’. Long doesn’t work as it’s too straggly so I have it just on my shoulders which I think looks best. It’s up to people what they do, cut it, don’t cut it who really cares?

Candyflosscookie · 07/09/2020 13:35

@Micsam89 love that! Especially the colour. What a difference, makes your hair look so much thicker and healthier too.

It's not really what I would call short though. That's mid to me. I think of short as above chin/ears. Or am I completely out of touch? Highly possible Grin
