To think women can look stunning with short hair?

Was watching Cliffhanger last night and the heroine had short haor and was just stunning. Likewise Demi Moore and Princess Di suit the look.
I do like my long hair and dont have the guts for a pixie cut as I have slight jowls. Following on from my. " all the girls now have big eyebrows" thread, I'm now observing that hardly any young girls have short hair! This has been done before and I'm prob just jealous of the long locks....but what was once a cool statement is no longer a thing. Why?

Remember when Sarah Harding had her hair cut short and even surrounded by Girls Aloud & princess Tweedy it was the magnificent Sarah who stole the show Grin

Silentplikebath · 07/09/2020 00:31

Emma Willis looks stunning with short hair but she’d be beautiful with any hairstyle.

I’ve had my hair short in the past but I definitely look better with medium length hair.

MiddlesexGirl · 07/09/2020 00:35

I’m not a fan of anything longer than shoulder length hair on middle aged women

Hmm
SerenDippitty · 07/09/2020 00:42

I've been watching a programme on Amazon set in 1969, the name of it has temporarily escaped me - but I was struck by the fact that the women all had different hairstyles in different lengths. So different from today.

Notcontent · 07/09/2020 00:44

My teen dd has short hair - she loves it - but very, very few girls her age have short hair. It’s quite odd really, as when I was her age (late 80s) girls had all sorts of hair - short, long, bobs, perms, etc.

eaglejulesk · 07/09/2020 00:55

It takes a short cut to look sharp and stylish.

I agree. Unless you have gorgeous hair long hair tends to look much the same, and you blend into the background. A short cut stands out from the crowd. I would love to have a really stylish short cut, but my hair is curly/wavy and although it looks okay (it's short) it's not the stunning short style I would like.

OwlBeThere · 07/09/2020 00:56

Most of my friends had similar hair in the 90s, some sort of curly mid length thing. With 1 or 2 exceptions. My daughters’ friends all have different Hair, some long, some short, some shaved and cropped.

Taikoo · 07/09/2020 00:57

Very good looking women can look stunning with short hair.
For the rest of us hoofers though, short hair would be the kiss of death.

I suspect the wavy-gravy-three layers-long-haired-look will continue for another while yet. Its been with us for 20 years already. I personally don't like that long layered haircut, its very dated.
That Gisele Bundchen has a lot to answer for.

eaglejulesk · 07/09/2020 00:58

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace - nothing wrong with your face, and you rock that hair!

cbt944 · 07/09/2020 01:11

If you enjoy spending hours of your life in a hairdresser's, in front of a cruel mirror, in bad lighting, while someone faffs about making pointless small-talk and de-improving your look, or doing the opposite of what you've asked, and if you enjoy paying for that privilege - if you are incapable of doing your own colour, or if you like short hair with flicky layers, or smooth bobs, or if you are one of the very few women in the world, other than Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby, who actually suits a pixie - then knock yourself out.

But no need to impose any of your odd style rules on other women.

NiceGerbil · 07/09/2020 01:13

CBT weird post.

Why do you feel so strongly about other women's hair?

Men with short hair get frequent cuts. Are they fools?

Women with some short styles DIY and look awesome...

I'm really interested why you feel so strongly about this... Over invested. It's trivial. It's just hair.

NiceGerbil · 07/09/2020 01:15

As an aside.

All of you 'it only looks good if you're gorgeous' people have presumably noticed that lots of older women have short hair.

Seems a bit harsh.

Also it's a standard in certain parts of the world...

cbt944 · 07/09/2020 01:16

Nice gerbil. Weird response. Why do you feel so strongly about my post?

Maybe I should have included the quotes I couldn't be bothered bolding. Here:

It takes a short cut to look sharp and stylish.

I’m not a fan of anything longer than shoulder length hair on middle aged women.

They were already on the page, above my post.

cbt944 · 07/09/2020 01:19

By the way, I thought my post made it clear I do not enjoy the hairdresser experience. I have been happily hairdresser free for four years or so now, and for longer in other happy periods of my hair's life. But if you think short hair looks good, mostly you must endure a hairdresser. Each to their own, I guess.

Taikoo · 07/09/2020 01:29

NiceGerbil

Its not just hair, though. For a good number of women, their hair is part of their identity and it is important.
I know it is for me.
Maybe its not important for you but you can't speak for all of us.

NiceGerbil · 07/09/2020 01:32

CBT many women with very short hair do it themselves.

You should also look into home hairdressers.

Taikoo I know. Honestly I do. That was not intended for you.

NiceGerbil · 07/09/2020 01:35

My hair was the first, only and overwhelmingly commented on thing for years.

I found it undermined my sense of self and pissed me off, tbh.

I would never criticise a woman for wanting great hair. Who doesn't?

The comment that CBT made was just nasty though.

cbt944 · 07/09/2020 01:41

Taikoo I know. Honestly I do. That was not intended for you.

Why should I look into home hairdressers? How bizarre.

How many ways can I say I don't like hairdressers or their results on me. If I wanted short hair I would do it myself with nailscissors, or with my hairdresser's scissors that I use to do my own hair. But I don't want short hair. Why should I?

Most women with short hair - especially those who like and sport a 'short sharp style' do require professional assistance, though. I expect many enjoy their time in the salon. For some it's very relaxing, pampering, a ritual they enjoy. For me, it's not.

I am not sure why you are jumping down my neck like this.

NiceGerbil · 07/09/2020 02:20

You're making a lot of assumptions there.

If you don't like going to the hairdressers don't go. I went once a year when I had long hair, if that.

Many women with short hair DIY.

The idea that women with short hair are loving going to the hairdresser every 10 mins is really odd.

How do you feel about men with short hair?

cbt944 · 07/09/2020 02:24

God bless, you're nuts.

Micsam89 · 07/09/2020 02:33

Yes! I just had mine cut short for the first time. I have a chubby face, but I wanted a big change so I went for it! Even if my face isn't the right shape for it, I feel great and love it.

To think women can look stunning with short hair?
eaglejulesk · 07/09/2020 02:38

@cbt944 - actually I love going to the hairdresser, would go every week if I could afford it. I have short hair and visit my hairdresser every three months, so you have no idea what you are talking about. Also, if you find going to a hairdresser such an ordeal then you are going to the wrong person.

There is no need to impose your odd theory about going to a hairdresser on other women!

eaglejulesk · 07/09/2020 02:42

I am not sure why you are jumping down my neck like this.

Could it be because your post was unpleasant? You seem to have some sort of axe to grind, but really this is not the place. If you don't want to say something useful how about you leave this thread - no-one is forcing you to be here.

cbt944 · 07/09/2020 02:52

Note to self:

  1. Do not write multiple clauses, or complex, or unusually structured sentences on MN.

  2. Never, ever diss the pixie. It suits all women!

eaglejulesk You've already been incredibly unpleasant to me on another thread about middle-aged women daring to like long hair (still waiting for the apology), so what fun for you to have another go. I seem to recall you expressing several times the desire to snip off the ends of random women's longer hair that look too straggly for your tastes.

You're nuts, too.

Frownette · 07/09/2020 03:13

Course? Who gives an eff?

Looks brilliant on some people.
