To think women can look stunning with short hair?

Was watching Cliffhanger last night and the heroine had short haor and was just stunning. Likewise Demi Moore and Princess Di suit the look.
I do like my long hair and dont have the guts for a pixie cut as I have slight jowls. Following on from my. " all the girls now have big eyebrows" thread, I'm now observing that hardly any young girls have short hair! This has been done before and I'm prob just jealous of the long locks....but what was once a cool statement is no longer a thing. Why?

They can, and both my daughters love having short hair - one has shaved her hair all off twice (shortest was a 4 on the clippers, all over) and now keeps it no more than ear length with a fringe as she hates it on her face and the other had a really short style when she started secondary school and has over the last couple of years grown it out and evened it up so it's all the same length and can go in a small ponytail.

I think it really suits them both, but am happy whatever length they have their hair. Not sure how true, but they often tell me that their friends said their parents wouldn't let them have short hair (my parents and many others I knew had a similar opinion on girls' hair when I was growing up). It's just one of those things that goes in and out of fashion and has varying levels of support. Similar with boys and men having long hair.

in M&S a couple of years ago. A girl maybe 14-15 with what I'd call an 80s crop. Accidentally looked like a film star (the girl who had small parts in Garp and St Elmo's Fire - Jenny Wright, or Ally Sheedy). No make up or anything - just out with her dad shopping. Stunning. Long hair would have hidden her. Made me feel sorry for girls nowadays with hair all being so "standard",

I had very short hair most of my life then grew it to shoulder length in my 50s. I hate long hair on me and others.
Lost it all due to chemotherapy last year and it was just growing again at the start of lockdown so I gave myself a buzz cut.
I love it so short and plan to keep it, but I do still have good cheek bones even though im in my 60s now.

@whiteroseredrose

Sweetpetrichor surely long hair is easier. You shave every week. I used to have my hair cut once or twice a year.
Not @SweetPetrichor obviously but another who shaves her hair every couple of weeks.

I don’t have to comb it or condition it or worry about the colour or tie it up or back or anything. It’s very very low maintenance and running the clippers over takes about 10 minutes.

Did mine start of lockdown. Never going back to having hair.

It suits me and makes me very happy. Win/win I think

romeolovedjulliet · 06/09/2020 22:08

it certainly is very popular among older women although it's not my look. i have sholder length azure soft curls at present Grin

OwlBeThere · 06/09/2020 22:09

I’ve always had short hair by most people’s standards. Long for me is just above shoulder length like I currently have (because I haven’t had time to go to the haurdresser since they reopened!). It’s usually somewhere from pixie to bob length. I think it’s much more flattering on me personally. Of course you can look great with short hair.

FinnyStory · 06/09/2020 22:11

I like my hair best when it's really short. Too many "short" haircuts on women are not short enough IMO, that's when they become frumpy and hard work. It's also true, as PP said that hairdressers don't like to cut hair properly short.

JalapenoDave · 06/09/2020 22:11

Absolutely. I'd love to be able to pull off a pixie cut, or shaved at one side. But I'd look like a potato.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 06/09/2020 22:11

I love short hair, I think women look more groomed with a neat cut, same for little girls, I hate seeing long straggly loose hair on tots.

SortByPriceLowToHigh · 06/09/2020 22:12

I’ve got a chin length bob (sliiiiiightly shaped into my neck at the back so it doesn’t look too blocky) but not graduated. It looks thick and healthy at this length - my hair is very fine, and when it was long it looked so lank and thin. I am also pretty decent at using kirby grips to pin it up, as I do like a bit of variety and wouldn’t want to wear it ‘down’ every day.

Blondephantom · 06/09/2020 22:12

Women can look stunning with short hair, mid length hair, long hair or no hair. Or any length I forgot about.

SweetPetrichor · 06/09/2020 22:14

@whiteroseredrose nah, cause it takes 5 mins max to shave it and I don’t need to brush it in the morning, style it, wash it, dry it or any of that. I don’t even think about my hair at all other than when I chose to shave. And I could easily go 2-3 weeks between shaves if I wanted to save even more time but I prefer it super short so I do take the 5 minutes to do it weekly.

Sparklesocks · 06/09/2020 22:16

Absolutely. I think it does help if you have quite a ‘striking’ face for a very short cut (eg Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby) - women with stronger features seem to pull it off best.

ravensoaponarope · 06/09/2020 22:18

This isn't news?

FunorFitness · 06/09/2020 22:20

My 12 year old had her waist length hair cut into a pixie last month and looks amazing.

MarshaBradyo · 06/09/2020 22:22

Watching Line of Duty atm and Vicky McClure looks fantastic with short hair. Better than long imo

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/09/2020 22:22

I just came to say that you don't need to be pretty, strong features look great - e.g. Annie lennox.

I had short hair as a teen and adult (neither pretty or strong featured !) but it did work. I'm in my fifties now and either have a shortish bob or long hair - usually just cut it a couple of times a year, so shortish to long then chopped again :)

DeliciouslyFemale · 06/09/2020 22:23

I looked my best with a pixie cut in the 90s, but I had lovely cheekbones. I haven’t had my hair done regularly for years, so just tie it back, when it gets long enough. With lockdown, it’s longer than it’s been in years. I find short hair needs too many visits to the hairdressers.

thistimelastweek · 06/09/2020 22:25

It takes a short cut to look sharp and stylish.

redlipped · 06/09/2020 22:26

I love my short afro hair. I have a skin fade and patterning on the side with loose curls on top. Never felt so confident!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 06/09/2020 22:27

You really don't need to be pretty to opt for short hair.

My user name ain't my user name for nothing - and my ears stick out a bit to boot - but I still rock the look, no matter what anyone says Blush

You have to have a certain look to carry it off. It can also be expensive to maintain because you have to have it trimmed every month or every few weeks or it looks ragged if you don't have the kind of cut you can use clippers on.

xxlostxx · 06/09/2020 22:28

Madonna in Papa Don't Preach era! Looked amazing. I don't have the facial features to carry it off unfortunately!

redlipped · 06/09/2020 22:30

Yes to it being expensive. I go to the barber every 10 days or so.

bellinisurge · 06/09/2020 22:30

My SIL in her early sixties has a silver pixie cut and looks fucking awesome.
